I myself have a Razer Arctosa as I came to SC2 from competitive FPS, however have found it's not really the best for RTS gaming with it's low-profile keys..
Do you feel your keyboard plays a huge role in how well you can play? Have you tried other keyboards and found comparable differences?
This thread is largely for me to gain an idea of whether I should sell on my Arctosa in order to replace it with a different keyboard (e.g. Razer Marauder?) as i'm looking to get quite serious in SC2.
I'm using my g15 v2 right now, I love the keyboard so far, also the ability to control and see what music is on during a game is great . Ive also got one of my macro keys set to say gl hf before games too.
I use a laptop keyboard, and I don't think so. It'd be pretty petty of me to use my keyboard as an excuse for my lack of hotkey and control group use (only memorize the basics, like workers, and never use more than 5 different control groups).
don't buy the razer stuff, it's cheap crap with lights stuck to it.
i've got a G15 (the first version, the blue one, basically G11 with a screen) and it's wonderful, however i've had it since the release (which is what? like 5-6 years back?) and it's kinda starting to give up on me i lose control with the buttons starting to get a bit wobbly and not stay where they should and sometimes locking up, time to buy a new keyboard. as it looks now it'll probably be a G11 since i want those high keys, proper quality and back lighting since i usually play pretty dark.
Microsoft X4. It's personal preference if you ask me. You have to be confortable with it and not always hitting the wrong keys. Not like you need any custom keys as you can set none.
I personally use a Saitek Eclipse keyboard, the keys are pretty solid yet light, and laser etched, with 3 different selectable LEDs.
But as far as usage goes, I've been using it since circuit city went out of business like two years ago or however long ago that was lol(got it on sale there) and it is still as great as ever. It works quite well because the keys are perfectly sized for my hands(not those short little wimpy laptop-type keys) and they are very responsive and durable. It is also quite comfortable to use for extended periods of time, it comes with one of those ergonomic wrist attachment thingies, but it's actually pretty neat.
I don't have any experience with Razer keyboards, but I suggest checking out Saitek keyboards. Even if you don't buy one, they're nice keyboards and worth checking out. Oh, and it also has windows media player and volume buttons tucked in the corner, I don't know if that's important to you or not, but they are perfect, small, and out of the way.
I can't play any games on a low-profile keyboard unless it's something like Stepmania. I've been using a USB Dell keyboard for almost 6 years and I don't feel the need to try any other keyboard.

Honestly, any keyboard will do wonders for you as long as you're comfortable with it. Getting a brand new "gaming" keyboard isn't going to instantly make you a better gamer.
I've tried uber expensive keyboards... but the money difference just isn't really worth it. Find a keyboard that clicks well and has responsive buttons and thats all you need imo
I use the macro-stik 5000. Makes winning games easier than makin some bacon.
And sometimes I use that cheap dell keyboard with the broken backspace button so i can't even erase what I type, it helps keep everything flowing though, its pretty sweet.
Razer Lycosa, since the Arctosa is a piece of crap imo. The Lycosa has a mechanical feel to it while still having all the sweet features for playing other games such as WoW where I need the capability to put macros on my keyboard or Lost Viking to make my space bar actually spam space to fire faster ^_^
As for feel, yeah I feel that the Lycosa > the cheap stock Dell keyboard I used to use for SC. The lower profile keys are really helpful when doing a bunch of actions in a row like building units.
EDIT: Razer keyboards probably aren't nearly as good as their mice (the Lycosa's driver is nowhere near as user-friendly as the Mamba's) but they're much better than what I've head about their audio products.
I like wolfking's keyboards, they are pretty cheap but actually have a design that has gaming in mind instead of the typical rectangular keyboards that are only designed for typing.
Looks "fancy" but the only reasons I got it was because it had a close resemblance to my previous keyboard, and I wanted volume up/down + mute keys.
I really don't feel like I need macro keys to "up my play". Just get something you feel comfortable with, the previous keyboard I had before this one was a cheap 9,99$ logitech standard keyboard, and I dare say it was the best damn keyboard i've had. I tried buying the exact same model but couldn't find it anywhere
See I had the Lycosa and had issues with keys not responding in certain combinations. An example would be if I was holding CTRL for crouch, A and W for moving diagonally and then hitting R for reload would cause the keyboard to "lock up" and I would have to let go of all the keys for it to start responding again. This is not the exact combination because it was a fair while ago but it pissed me off to no end when I tried to play any FPS. Inexcusable for something being marketed as a "gaming" keyboard.
That keyboard only lasted about 3 months until the backlight died so I threw it out. I was pissed off at wasting so much money on it but I was glad at the same time because it was a piece of shit that gave me nothing but grief.
Logitech G15...the second edition orange one. Never use any of the G keys for starcraft though. I love having the LCD screen, even with just the clock, during games.

That's called "Ghosting" and funny because the Razer are suppose to prevent that. Anyhow I had a cheap dell before but changed just because of that.
I'm a Razer fanboy. I use a Lycosa/Lachesis combo.
I saw some Razer hate on page one. The only problem I've every had was with my Lachesis - Its retardedly high DPI sometimes made it bug out a bit, either freezing up, or moving my cursor all funny.
Luckily Razer updated the drivers, and it hasn't happened sense.
I just bought a Filco Majestouch cherry brown tenkeyless and i really love it so far. although some people dont like how much noisier mechanical keyboards are over membrane keyboards.
reposting my boards - top to bottom Cherry Cymotion Master Linux, Deck Legend, Sejin Electron SKM-1040 (Boxerboard )
The latter two are mechanical (the Cherry, ironically, is not), with the Deck having nkey rollover and backlighting. The Sejin on the other hand is korean The Deck uses Cherry blue switches. The Sejin has Futaba switches
I'm using a Zboard 'Merc' keyboard. It has an attached 'gaming pad' on the left, but I don't ever use it because it feels cheap and unresponsive. Actually I was wondering if one of the more knowledgeable folks around here could tell me which keyboard it is that was featured in Oldboy. The one all of KT was using. It looked like it had a really nice non-slick surface and had really responsive looking feel to the keys. I've been looking for a keyboard with a really responsive 'light' touch to it, but can't seem to find one locally and it's impossible to tell over the net. If someone could enlighten me as to that KT keyboard, or even suggest another I would be very appreciative. ^_^

Got a razer arctosa, but bought some cheap trust keyboard for 10 $ today and painted the keys black (so that i can't see the letters on the keys) works great so far.

haha I spent one summer taking full advantage of Fry's Electronics one month return policy. I think I tried like 10 different keyboards and mice that summer.
Settled on the Logitech MX518 Optical Mouse and Razer Tarantula. Hate on Razer products as much as you want, but this one particular keyboard is far and away better than the rest of their rather garbage products.

Why would you paint the kays black..........
heh, i get asked a similar question when people see my keyboard:
but i love it. when you can't see the keys, you're forced to memorize all the positions. the only keys i didn't know by heart when i got it were the symbol positions (!@#%^&*) but now i know them easily, and consequently am very good at hitting the right control group at the right time aside from that, it's a great conversation piece and feels AMAZING! the click is like no other. if you guys tried one, you'd fall in love
but i'm not sure i'll get used to it, i'm hesitating between the labelled key one and the black one. My actual keyboard is a 10$ keyboard and sometimes move on the table when I get crazy in SC so I need a new one, I'll keep my keyboard for life so I guess it would be a long term investment. Just not sure if I can memorize all the key like (' . , * , printscreen, etc)
Got it off a friend, solid keyboard. Probably wouldn't go out and buy something this fancy if I wasn't getting an awesome deal on it. If you play FPS you will love the game pad on the left. The keys are also really close together and have a nice feel to them (awesome for SC :D).

I use exactly this model, for about the same period of time, since early 2004. I love it quite a lot, and it's worn to all hell due to how much use and abuse it saw. Funniest part is, I didn't notice the USB ports in it until about 4 months ago. It makes setting up at other peoples computers so much easier as I usually have my mouse plugged into it.
As an aside to spark discussion and give this thread a little more meat than "I HAVE THIS KEYBOARD GUYS. NEXT THREAD PLZ.", What do you guys think of keyboards with low profiles? I find myself slightly uncomfortable on low profile keyboards, and completely thrown off on EXTRA low profile keyboards, where the keys are barely higher than the frame. the miscellaneous buttons around only matter to me in that I need volume controls, as I've never played a game where macro keys and whatnot would really help me out.
I use the Arctosa, got it a few months back since I had a gift certificate to best buy or something, I don't remember for sure. It doesn't give me any problems. I'm sure there are better ones out there, but I think it's comfortable and I like how light it is.
I can't stand wired mice anymore, so restrictive. Wireless keyboard is more of just a preference thing as I can sit back in bed and still control the PC.
Unicomp bought IBM's factories and makes Model M's now. No gimmicks, mechanical switches. It sounds like a typewriter. It also weighs a ton thanks to the steel plate used as a backing for the keys.
I use a G15. Just got it on Tuesday. Has anyone written a script for the G15 to put the Razer registry information into the LCD screen... it would be fun to see my super-low APM in game

Zomg. That would be the most useful thing ever.
I wonder if it could be made and compatible with my razer deathadder..

Oh no! What happened to it? Don't tell me it somehow stopped working? I'm gonna get a unicomp if mine ever dies, just can't get work done without that keyboard (it just FEELS like I'm doing something important when I'm typing on one).

that keyboard is such a waste of money, the only thing that makes it different from the arctosa is backlighting and 2x the price. and the low profile keys is just horrible for quick APM imo

i don't agree with the last part
but the lycosa certainly has issues with keys just randomly not working. there's nothing like being in an intense game and realize you don't have any probes because your e key has decided not to respond
I was digging through my garage and found an old Dell QuietKey, tried it out, and loved how it felt and sounded. Been using it for a couple months now. Previously I used the stock Dell keyboard that they shipped with their computers a couple years ago. At LAN's I always got asked "Did you steal that keyboard from the school's computer lab?" lol
My Sony Vaio Cw series laptop built in keyboard and Logitech wireless mouse are all I need. I'm comfortable with it and it's definately the least of my problems when it comes to starcraft.

Old version of the G15. Blue is better than the newer red. Seems to have better quality buttons and hash the ipod-style volume control rather than buttons. Screen is adjustment too.
I never liked Razer. Their early mice were too light and the high DPS is just marketing. I tried their new keyboard at a friend's recently and they don't compare to logitech and some microsofts. But then again, not all logitech keyboards are made equal either.
This is seriously by far the best keyboard I´ve EVER used. The keystroke is just unbelievable awesome. Well IMO that doen´t matter that much for SC. But this one is just great if you work with your keyboard all day and because of the layout, it saves some space on my desk ^_^
I´m using it for ~6 years now and am still blown away by the keystroke. rofl, I already bought another just in case Raptor-Gaming stops producing it one day. I will never ever use another keyboard in my hole life. ...damn, I sound like the sickest fanboy ^_^
Edit: You can press all keys at once if you like to and non keystroke is missed. Most keyboards are limited to 3 or 4 keys simultaneous I think. So this is nice for shooters sometimes where you do something like running+strafing+jumping+weaponswitch at the same time...

I had to pay for mine
$150 is not much for a keyboard with mechanical switches. In the era of all-mechanical keyboards a usual price was closer to $200. And that was a lot. But not overpriced. Consider the price for each switch.
Majestouch Tactile Touch (Cherry brown switches) NKRO (true N-key rollover with PS/2, 6-key NKRO+4 modifier keys with USB) with space-saving dimensions 440 x 138 x 38.5mm

I have a K1 in German layout myself and I'm pretty sure they aren't true NKRO but 6-key NKRO+4 modifiers. The problem I've been having while playing SC2 is, the Fn keys are way too far away from the number line and the left Shift key is way too small for me because of this EU layout. Also the position of the left Alt key is a little bit strange: it lies on the left side of the Y/Z key. But once you're getting used to it, it should be an awesome keyboard. Though I'd definitely recommend a keyboard in US ANSI layout (I'm dying for a HUGE left Shift key, yeah!).

A 15 year old Siemens Nixdorf keyboard with an EsCOM logo on it ... It is one of those square and flat office style ones in light-gayish-brownish color. The main advantage is that it is flat and not so bulky as the usual fancy ones and that the keys have a nice "pressure point".

According to the BlackWidow, I think if you have no problem with the positions of the Fn keys and the "noise" that Cherry blue switches make, and you also have enough room for its super length and width, then it could be a good choice

I also have this keyboard...
I didn't want something with over 9000 buttons but wanted something a little sturdier than a $5 dell one. This seemed like a good compromise plus it has pretty blue lights.
I use a Cherry G80-3000, a mechanical board. I got it for release and honestly it feels great. Every key press is precise and satisfying. The only downside is that it is quite loud, so perhaps the 'black' (I believe) switches are a better option, which have the same precise feeling but less sound. I think these are the ones found on the Steelseries 7g, although that was double the price of my keyboard.
I would certainly recommend the investment (£60). I have used Razer keyboards and cheap membrane keyboards and I can't use them anymore after this experience.

Here's the competing product in the market for what razer is offering. They are identical. So a little preview and another one to consider if you like this design.
I bought a Logitech G15 one and a half years ago for like 80€. One of the bigger wastes of money in my life. My shaman needed more keybinds though, but creativity would have solved more problems than those extra keys. Well, someday it'll break and I get myself a good one.
I'm using a Microsoft ComfortCurve 2000, simply because I liked the keyboard. The keys are really light and easy to press, so no problems with trying to spam left hand. It should be noted that while the F1 key is usually above 1, sometimes it is slightly to the right of 2 on certain keyboard models--this makes BW are little difficult for me to play, since I mistakenly hit F1 while trying to recall a screen location.

some sort of logitech deluxe, model name says y-su6l. Its a simple mechanical keyboard that has a nice feel to it. I don't understand the purpose of flashy keyboars that have tons of features, small screens and what not. The only reason to buy them is for their nice design, but i'm not into that.
Currently I am using a Razer Lycosa ( from my nooby years ) and I am looking into buying 1 of 3 keyboards, The Steelseries 7G, Razer Marauder or the Razer Blackwidow.. Anyone have the 7G? What is the difference between the mechanical keyboards and a standard keyboard? What is best for Starcraft?

The 7G is mechanical, so i would have to recommend that. You're going to have to wait for information on the blackwidow though, theres no real consensus if its good or not, apparently its using the cherry MX blue switches, but no one is sure. I would actually skip all these "gaming" brand keyboards and go for a good mechanical keyboard that does not boast by gamers for gamers and spend millions on advertising every year.
I have the G11, its the same keyboard as the G15 except no screen and therefore cheeper. Its pretty awesome and its built like a fucking tank. I could beat some one to death with it, wipe off the blood and then play some SC2 and it would feel exactly the same.
Only downside is its kinda big/heavy for taking to lan parties, not that that's an issue with SC2(grumble grumble)

I posted a strangely identical video of one a page back. That's basically what the razer is gonna be except for sound cause every manufacturer changes how plate interacts with keys.
I bought the Razer Lycosa. Worth 80 dollars? Definitely not. It is badly produced imo. The jacks on it are loose and sometimes don't work. Do I love it...? Yes. It has a great feel and even though I don't think it improves my game at all, it makes me feel better.

I think you want the MX Brown switches. They have had the click "silenced" but still have the tactile touch. This means you get the feel of a clicky keyboard without the sound
Got a Logitech Media 600-keyboard atm. Nothing fancy. Tho i was i had the money to spend on a mechanical keyboard like Das Keyboard or SteelSeries 7G / 6Gv2
I like to keep it simple, simplicity in my keyboard and complexity in my mouse. I just use a basic hp ku 0841 yeaup, strait out of a bundle with my desktop. Feels good to use has the right sound I like to hear and I dunno it just feels right for me. Or maybe I am just easy to please *shrug*
Best keyboard I've ever had. Better than any Logitech or Microsoft keyboard I've ever owned. The only thing wrong with it is that you need to get a USB extension cord because the cord is quite short.
I ordered a steelseries 6gv2 direct from steelseries a few days ago. Hoping they'll ship it soon as it has apparently been released for awhile now even though their product page says it's still "coming soon". On their online store, it was apparently in stock.

Same here and I love it. Gotta love stock keyboards!!
Just bought a 7g a few hours ago and absolutely loving it! It comes with a wrist-rest peripheral that is just incredible, extremely comfortable on the wrists. It was expensive, but for now I'm more than satisfied.
But when i will have money i will get a good mechanical keyboard.
Pretty sure this is the exact same keyboard I use. Got it for like 10 bucks and never had a problem with it. Baffles me that people spend so much money on a keyboard for such little difference...I'd rather investment that money back into my actual PC.
Logitech G15 here. I find that most of the features of this keyboard are not really that helpful for SC2 though. It still has a good overall feel to it though so not a complete waste of $
Mechanical keyboards really are the best. They aren't all that much more expensive than the shitty Razer/Steelseries GAMING GEAR membrane ones either.
I too have the Filco Majestouch (cherry browns) and I love it! The keys are very responsive, without taking much force to depress the key. I could never go back to a cheap membrane keybaord after typing/playing on this for about a year now. Definitely check out http://elitekeyboards.com/ and http://geekhack.org/ if you're interested in them.
currently using this one.. im looking for a keyboard that is a bit lighter to press, but not clicky like a mechanical. im looking into the MS sidewinder x6

i've got a G15 (the first version, the blue one, basically G11 with a screen) and it's wonderful, however i've had it since the release (which is what? like 5-6 years back?) and it's kinda starting to give up on me i lose control with the buttons starting to get a bit wobbly and not stay where they should and sometimes locking up, time to buy a new keyboard. as it looks now it'll probably be a G11 since i want those high keys, proper quality and back lighting since i usually play pretty dark.
Rofl. The person with one of the overpriced logitechs insults razer.
My Arctosa is $40. Has no lights, n00bs cant even see what the keys say so you have to actually be a baller to use it-- and its flawless and godly. Razer makes great products for very reasonable prices.
Also, you dont need backlighting to play in the dark if you're gosu.

This man speaks the truth.
I use this very same keyboard, and have no complaints with the button press, responsiveness or comfort level.
Also, it only takes up a little space on my desk, which is a bonus in my tiny room.
Im on my second Razer Lycosa, as I came from a FPS background too. AT first it took me a little while to get used to it, but now that I am i enjoy playing on it alot.
Personally just use whatever you feel comfortable playing with. If you have a keyboard now, that suits you and has no problems, stick with it. But if you dislike your current keyboard, Just buy a semi cheap Dell, or Logitech. You dont need anything fancy at all for Starcraft, just something you can be comfortable and know where exactly your hand rests on the keyboard.
Used the Lycosa for about 2 weeks before I took it back, severe ghosting problems. Bought a G15 for $20 cheaper, and I love it. The timer on it alone is worth it for me.
I use that one currently but the Otaku version (textless). It is undeniably the best keyboard I've ever used so far. Definitely can vouch for it. I plan to get a full-sized Majestouch Cherry MX Brown soon as well.

That is the keyboard I use as well. I have a Das Silent at work but i find the filco to have fewer "squeaky" feelings keys than the Das even though they both have the same switches.
I would definitely buy another filco if/when needed.

I just bought a full-size Majestouch with the Cherry MX Brown switches, it's pretty nice. Still getting used it, but already I love the quality and feel of this keyboard over my old DT-35. I seen quite a bunch of players using Filco keyboards in GSL, including Tester and Cool.

The brown ones are probably better for typing, though I prefer the black ones for everything even without the tactile feel they still feel great.
Some things I was worried about -They are not heavy at all, probably similar to rubber domes to press all the way down but you don't need to press them all the way down just tap them slightly and you will get the key registered -I wouldn't say they are 100% worth it for the money but over time as I get more used to them I find it unbearable to use other keyboards so there is something about them that makes them special
razor lycosa, never had any problems & I use it constantly. Been about 3years or so since I purchased it. Back light is still working perfectly. Only problem I have had with it, is the wsad keys have been warn down, so you can't see the letter anymore via back light.
Razer does have a new KB with mechanical switches for like 80 EUR. WIth lots more features, why get this one over the razer one? Pls no answer like "because razer sucks" blabla, thanks.
FILCO is like the complete minimalist yet absolutely solid type keyboard. It has no extraneous features, especially if you get tenkeyless, and is wonderfully compact. Real gamers don't use macro keys anyway so if you're anything like me or the numerous other gamers that can appreciate the space saved and simplicity while maintaining all the solid important qualities - you definitely can't go wrong with FILCO.

Not really; I use cherry blues and they are just fine, pretty much the exact same thing as the browns, except for the click noise (which I am fine with). the main reason I'd get a filco over a razer keyboard is probably the durability and the NKRO rollover. Razer products aren't exactly the most long lasting, and NKRO is just plain useful and a must if you still use PS/2

I feel like blue switches make it harder to double tap because the release point is above the accentuation point. I guess you can get used to it. I think brown are the best
I had a steelseries 6gv2 and I loved it. Except I had to return it because '\' was not in it's usual place above 'enter' which severely messed me up when using the keyboard for work.
Right now I'm holding my breath for positive reviews on the razer blackwidow mainly because of the price point. If it ends up being a lemon, I'm going to splurge on a filco or das.
I use a Razer Orochi mouse along with—wait for it—the iMac keyboard that came with the computer ~6 years ago. No desire to get a new keyboard. In my opinion, what RTS players least need vis-à-vis peripherals is a gaming(read:"expensive") keyboard. The cheaper ones do just fine, and some would say better.
So far it seems to be a pretty nice compact mechanical keyboard.
Pretty nice for a compact keyboard. Personally, I would be very annoyed with the moved home/end/del keys though.
My arrow keys are moved as well, but have no big issue with it: http://kbdholic.net/xe/kbd/355
One great thing I just realized about your Keyboard that's nice though, is that I realized you could use the numpad for end, home and delete. Except home is in a bad spot, but you could always re-bind it instead of insert.
Things that I like about my keyboard: - Cherry Brown MX switches, which is why I got it - It cost much cheaper than most people will ever pay for their mechanical keyboards. - It has double-shot keys, which means the glyphs on the keys will never wear out until you almost wear a complete hole in the key Note that that picture is NOT using double-shots though
Things I don't like about my keyboard: -The fact that the numpad is on the right side and not the left. Tenkeyless are nice, but I'd rather just have the keys moved. I don't care about the size, really, just positioning. - Would have preferred more buttons instead of the touchpad. That or the touchpad moved to the right edge of the KB. - I wish there was software that could interpret touchpad gestures (separate from the mouse, although maybe it wouldn't interfere with normal mouse use), or even press locations to emulate buttons would be excellent. - Function keys are too far away from the rest of the KB, and there's even a space between the f12 row and f24 row. having the f24 row on the left side instead would be nice, like on old keyboards (or just numpad on the left as previously mentioned). -Card-reader at the top is useless to me, although one can use it for security on their system. It adds to the size of the KB.

To all people talking about key rollover, I think it's not a very useful thig. First of all, all modern keyboards can press a ton of key at once, just not ANY combo of keys. Many rollover stats are mentioned as the worse possible number of keys combined, which will usually register only 2 keys out of 3, but aside from true NKRO there are some exceptions. Overall, most keyboards have pretty good alignment of the grid so that you won't run into any issues. Some keyboards do have the problem, but the only situation i see it being an issue is for games like Stepmania or FFR, and haven't customized your keys.
I type on my computer a lot because I do for a living. Initially I wanted a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard because it looks sleek and was designed specifically for typing. But then I got into SC2 and I'm worried the Illuminated Keyboard won't be as comfortable for SC2 gaming as compared to, let's say, the G15. Now the issue I have with G15 is it isn't as comfortable for typing as the Illuminated Keyboard. So now I'm in a pickle.
I got a Steelseries 6gv2 a couple of days ago and it's really awesome. It's basically the same keyboard as the 7g, but without the surrounding plastic ans USB 1.1 ports. Mechanical keyboards ftw.

There is absolutey nothing wrong with PS2 at all unless your computer is missing the PS2 socket (which as far as I know is impossible unless it's a laptop, or possibly ultra-small PC) PS2 runs on interrupts instead of polling, which AFAIK make it more responsive, although it's milliseconds or less, so is completely indifferent, even for gamers. The other advantage to it is that it's the only way to truely support full N-Key rollover, because USB is limited to something like 6 keys + modifiers (although true N-key rollover is 100% useless for virtually any situation I can think of except 2 people playing a game like stepmania/FFR at the same time on the same keyboard, or possibly other "hotseat" games)
Anyway, to clean your keyboard, it shouldn't be hard to open up (which is how you should clean it). There are usually just tabs, or screws holding the board's case together. With tabs, you should push them in with something like a flat-head screwdriver, but if you can, use something softer (like a plastic screwdriver) since they are a bit fragile and will also scratch/dent a bit, but it's not that important. You might need to unscrew screws instead, but that's easier, as long as you have the right screwdriver at least.
You can then pull off the keys with your fingers. Or carefully pry/pull them off with something home-made, or little pry bar.
Qsenn DT-35 all the way =]]. Really great keyboard, very reliable too
Also, play whatever you're most comfortable with, don't get gaming shit if you're not comfortable with it, it's all personal preference on what to play with, there is no "right or wrong" mouse/keyboard, just use what you're used too.
Aww, no poll? Dang, that's why I entered this thread in the first place. Shucks.
I play on the keyboard that's seemingly stuck on top of my Mac, which is interestingly enough stuck underneath this sweet keyboard I bought.
Still...my keyboard never cost me a match, in my opinion. I would suggest focusing on getting a pimpin' mouse instead, 'cause that's where things start getting important.

dont have exp. with their KBs but in mice they are good, their QUality Control is not that good, right. But There is no other Company out there who can give me such Mice they make. Like the Naga etc. Logitech is good, but all their Mice are horrible at ergonomics, big fat heavy mice always for right handers. But... logitechs quality control is superb.
Hm actually, i dont care about KBs that much as for Mice. I have a 20 EUR Logitech KB very simple, good flat buttons, and i cant imagine that any Razer KB for like 80 EUR would be better... and i dont need macros etc. on my Keyboard. For that ive got 9 different Mice.

I used to have an old-school blue Logitech G15 (before SC2, mostly played WoW), but I found that I didn't really use the extra features all that much. So when it finally broke down, I just went for the cheapest Logitech keyboard that had the one must-have feature for me: A volume-dial.

Currently using a razer tarantula, looking to buy a mechanical keyboard instead. Haven't decided on which one yet, doing some reading on the subject at the moment before I purchase one since I have no experience with mechanical keyboards.
I'm using the standard HP keyboard that came with my computer way back when I bought it. Needless to say, it kinda sucks. That is why I generally play most games with a Belkin n52te: + Show Spoiler +
I am really used to these devices and would recommend them to anyone looking for an alternative to the standard keyboard-2-button-mouse setup. I don't use the macro abilities with either device because I view them as cheating. In all honesty, however, I don't think they would probably give you much use in a game like SC2, but perhaps I'm wrong. Either way, no macros for me.
All that being said, I am planning on buying a Razer Blackwidow mechanical keyboard when they are available, partly because I need a new keyboard anyway (mine's a little sticky from a Pepsi-accident, doh) and because I'm thinking about playing with a more standard keyboard. Even tho I like my belkin and naga, I'm not super convinced that they are better than a more typical keyboard setup, and I feel like if I'm going to start playing in tournaments anytime I should probably get more familiar with playing on something more standard.

On October 16 2010 13:37 Garnet wrote: Would anyone recommend the Cherry G80-3000? If yes which switch?
From what I've read, Cherry brown switches are the best "all rounders" in terms of gaming and typing. i.e they're the ones you're most likely to get along with if you're new to mechanical keyboards. Cherry blues get mixed reviews for gaming, most due to how loud they are and can be distracting while gaming but also due to the way the tactile feel works, but I don't know enough to explain that. A lot of people are happy with the blues for gaming, but it's down to personal preference so browns are the safer option.
From what I've read browns require a very light touch, aren't too loud (still louder than most rubber dome keyboards though, since it is indeed a mechanical switch) and have a very subtle tactile feedback which most people find quite pleasant actually. It definitely sounds intriguing to me and I have never used anything other than cheap rubber dome keyboards, so I can't wait to try one heh.
As far as the G80-3000 goes, I was reading a lot about it today and it seems like a fine keyboard. The only complaint I've seen is to do with its size - it's freaking huge. Lots of wasted space compared to Filco's with their smaller form factor. But otherwise it's a good quality keyboard with a choice of blue or brown switches I believe, and is definitely a good cheap option for a first mechanical.
I'm considering getting a Majestouch Filco with cherry mx brown switches but i'm wary of the noise level they make seeing as I live in a dorm and my roommate goes to bed early sometimes.
Filco Tenkeyless NKRO w/ Blues. It types like a dream. I look forward to typing on it. GF is going to get a brown for her birthday, and I may get another for work, too.

I never liked Razer. Their early mice were too light and the high DPS is just marketing. I tried their new keyboard at a friend's recently and they don't compare to logitech and some microsofts. But then again, not all logitech keyboards are made equal either.

Mx518 for mouse and Steel Qck for pad.
You got the exact same setup as me!
Blue g15 Logitech MX518 Steelseries QcK
<3
It is really good!
I have the newer g15 and can't really complain , has been working perfectly for the past year and it's the best keyboard i've used since i started gaming.
My mouse is the same as yours, the mx518 , still working perfectly after 3 years of gaming aggression Don't think i'll ever need a new one..
I don't have a mousepad though , never used one and hope i never have to use one xD
Without the wrist-thing, without tab-key and without the mouse (using a MX518 ) Works quite well. Everything up to the '6' seems actually closer together than a regular keyboard. Still the keys don't feel really fast and it's cordless too (=slower).
As my first mech keyboard, should I go for brown or blue switches? I don't game too often(20 games of starcraft a week) , but I do a significant amount of typing.

Everyone and their mother is going to tell you brown switches. They're the favored RTS switch. I, however, have blue switches, and like them just as much. If you're going on odds of likability, you'll probably want to go for brown.
The reason I completely disregard the "typing" element, is because there's less of an "importance" (unless you're a 100+ wpm secretary) on which switch you get. The mechanical "switch" part, at least in my opinion, is done for the gaming preferences.
I'm using the cheapest keyboard I could buy when I first built my computer five years ago. It still works perfectly, except for backspace getting stuck every once and a while. I don't understand why people think that the quality of keyboard matters at all.
i saw on elitekeyboard.com (something like this) yesterday, they received (finally) some Filco majestouch, with cherry mx blue / black they'll get the one with cherry mx brown on october 31. so im gonna wait and order a filco majestouch with N-key rollover cherry mx brown i know these keyboard sells so freackin fast, its pretty hard to find on net (none on ebay.com) if i dont have the chnace to get one, i'll buy a cherrymx blue, kinda annoying sounds but, one of the best keyboard out there topre switches are pretty badass too

The mouse is what counts.
Because your opinion matters when you've never used a decent keyboard before, right?
On August 19 2010 08:12 Azile wrote: Cheap, reliable, i'm on like my 6th one.
I wouldn't call these reliable. I think I've purchased 6 or 7 of them. They just stop working so easily and I've never abused my equipment in a fit of rage. I wish I would have purchased a quality ~$100ish mechanical keyboard a long time ago. That will certainly be my next purchase...
I was shoping for a keyboard to replace my cheap mitsumi keyboard that i totaly love, but keys are getting worn out and not as good now, so i tryed getting a decent keyboard for a decent price.. its really problematic
There was really no keyboard out there for 50,60$ that was really worth not getting a 10$ logitech kb and no 60,70$ kbs that was worth not getting Filco Majestouch for 120$.. so my solution was to get the Logitech K120 for 10$ really simple but feels KINDA nice, that will keep me waiting for the backorder on filco...

Steelseries uses Cherry mechanical switches, moron. Yeah, that's right, the same switches Elitekeyboards use. Lumping Steelseries together with Razer and all the other rubbish is ridiculous.
Anyways, right now I'm using a Logitech K300. Pretty awful keyboard, but my old one went under a while back, so I got this one from a local store to hold me over until I can get a better one. I'm not sure what I'll go for yet, but the Steelseries ones are definitive candidates.

I like my Cherry G80-3000, I have the MX black, but for some reason they are much "loser" than my Plum MX104M... they have a really soft touch and don't require as much pressure to activate. The only issue this keyboard has for SC2 are F5 - F7... it's really hard to reach ctrl+ these keys, but I think MANY keyboards have this issue.
Steelseries Zboard, its great because i smoke and get tobacco and ash in the keys all the time, i just pull the keyset off and clean everything out then pop it back on lol.
I got it for playing WoW but its pretty good for SC2 aswell, should be even better when ig et the sc2 keyset!

Is it just my fat fingers or is A too far to the right? I can do 1a2a3a so much faster on my work keyboard (same lenovo kb as the 2nd answer in this thread)
When playing RTS i tend to use relatively cheap keyboards. At the moment i'm using a 10€ ( 14$) Cherry Keyboard.
I just think that playing RTS the way they are meant to be played destroys keyboards so i usually visit a store and try some keyboards to find a comfortable button height etc, and i never used my G11 for RTS.
Got this Logitech K120 for under 10$, was looking for a reason not to buy Filco Majestouch Brown. I found nothing that would compare to Majestouch for the price, but i got this k120 from Logitech for dirt cheap, and i totaly love it for now.
Im gonna buy the majestouch when its not BO anymore, but i think anything between the cheap Logitech for 10$ and the 120$ majestouch is wasting your money. i think im gonna make a little review on this keyboard.. totaly kickass 10$
Just got it yesterday and it is in every way perfect.
I don't know much about keyboards, but does the layout of that filco majestouch have a name? I want this exact layout for my next keyboard (Big enter key, long backspace, small shift) but I'm looking for something a bit cheaper.

i've got a G15 (the first version, the blue one, basically G11 with a screen) and it's wonderful, however i've had it since the release (which is what? like 5-6 years back?) and it's kinda starting to give up on me i lose control with the buttons starting to get a bit wobbly and not stay where they should and sometimes locking up, time to buy a new keyboard. as it looks now it'll probably be a G11 since i want those high keys, proper quality and back lighting since i usually play pretty dark.
wow i rarely post on this forum but you sir are clueless. G15 is trash. Razer is the best gaming gear QUALITY vise. Ive bought g15 and i was so dissapointed after using razer arctosa for so many years. The buttons and the way it is made is retarded. You probably think that its good because you never used a quality keyboard.
I just got my Qsenn DT-35 and I love it. It's basically like any other REALLY basic keyboard, but I decided to go all out and buy it since it's the one most pros use. Not only does it make my actions in SC2 faster, but it also helps me type faster in general. I used to have a keyboard like this, but it broke. My keyboard that replaced it had flat keys, and so getting used to big keys again seemed like it would be a pain, but it wasn't. The second I put it on my desk and started typing, I was in love.
Black KB Lenovo, pulled from an electronics recycling station. I had plenty of cool new apparatus and "gaming keyboads", but i return to using this bad boy because it's just THAT awesome.

Indeed it is the UK version. I'm sure you'll be able find some UK layout keyboards in NA (canada right?). Anyways good hunting!
I had the G11 In highschool when I used to play WoW and I thought it was the best thing ever. Then I spilled Arizona Tea on it and have been using crappy 10 dollar logitech keyboards for years.
And now I had a Blackwidow coming in the mail to go with my Lachesis mouse. When it comes, it'll be like Christmas . Seriously gotta go with the mechanical switching it craps on everything.

I'm in the same boat you are. I really like the k120 too, and I'll probably get the Majestouch tenkeyless when it comes off backorder. As far as cheapie keyboards go, the logitech seemed like the best I could find, and I wasn't about to buy something expensive when I'll probably get the Filco down the road anyway.
I'm thinking about getting a DAS though. 24% off for students isn't bad.
Hey fellas. I've been using a Razer Lycosa for the last 2.5 years, and it's worked great. I game A LOT and it has put up with constant abuse, lots of travelling, etc. A few keys are starting to get quite well worn and it's time to buy a new keyboard. I recently ordered a Filco Majestouch Tactile Touch (Brown switches) without NKRO(I thought NKRO at the time meant it was a Korean version or something LOL) so I'm curious how many buttons I can push at one time. Does it matter what "cluster" they're from on the keyboard or whatever. To be honest I don't know much about keyboards. I'm fully aware that I don't need NKRO for SC2, but I do play WoW a bit, and I'm afraid it might hurt my performance. Should I get an NKRO model? Money is not an issue.

Idra's keyboard looked, to my untrained eyes, like a white Samsung Dt-35, with some keys transplanted, presumably from a black DT-35.
Well, then I totally still want a checkered keyboard. It'd make it so much easier to find like, the P and O keys since my muscle memory is not too great.
I use a SteelSeries 6Gv2. Mechanical keyboards are much better at picking up keystrokes, especially in SC2 when you need to press multiple buttons at once.
USB keyboards can only transmit up to 4 buttons presses at once while a Mechanical keyboards can litterally have all the keys pressed and still transmit keystrokes.

How does everyone like the Filco mechanical 10 keyless for gaming (its on my wish list but hadn't found much info in regards to gaming without a numpad).
MS Natural Ergonomic 4000 - I used to have a Natural Multimedia, which had a much better key layout for me, but the Natural Ergo 4000 was the best affordable ergonomic available at the time, and I do love my ergonomic keyboards.

I absolutely *hate* this keyboard. I bought it and I've grown to despise the spacebar. The placement for pressing it is horrible and if you don't hit it right, it won't register the hit or worse get stuck or stick. ARG I'm even getting it typing this about it.

Have you ever used a numpad? Probably not. Unless you play dwarf fortress, you will probably never need the numpad, and therefore the tenkeyless is fine. I got the tenkeyless version so there is less distance between my hands, as I can put the mouse closer to the keyboard.
On August 19 2010 08:09 sLiniss wrote: Cheap Dell keyboard]s work fine
I've tried uber expensive keyboards... but the money difference just isn't really worth it. Find a keyboard that clicks well and has responsive buttons and thats all you need imo
This is the same keyboard I use, and I found it to be awesome for RTS, even though it's cheap. The keys just depress so smoothly compared to other keyboards I've used in the past, and it's much more comfortable for my hands because of that. I've used several brands in the past, and microsoft keyboards in particular I've found to be much more cumbersome.

Never have used the numpad for gaming although I do a lot for regular use. It is appealing to think of being able to have my hands a bit closer together and that way not so much fatigue. I am using a Microsoft 4000 right now and I hate it......
My new keyboard has arrived. It is an Ione scorpius m10 with blue switch keys. The clicky sound of the keys is so awesome but I can definitely see why some would not enjoy that feature.
My laptop keyboard... but I don't think I should be using it for gaming - even though I do, cause you know, its attacked to the computer that I'm using for gaming and all that jazz.
I honestly say save up and get a good filco. This is the best keyboard and quality for price since it feels the same as the day I got it after probably 2 years.
I use a Filco majestouch nkro with brown switches... but some people like blues, too. Blacks can feel a little stiff when you're spamming or holding down keys so stay away from steelseries ones unless you know you like switches.
I loved playing BW on my laptop, however it can't run SC2 so I'm currently stuck with a full-sized keyboard.
Losing the keypad, and reducing the size of the cursor-key area, is such a dream for Starcraft imo, it means I can have my mouse and keyboard hands much closer together, gives me less neck fatigue which I'm having trouble with. Also, ultra-compact keyboard makes it easier for me to hit the F-keys and Esc. My plan is to simply get a new laptop at some point, it's by far what I'm the most comfortable with.
I'm also a user of the new version of the Apple wireless keyboard since I'm a Mac user. I actually really love it and it's really comfortable for me to type on and has raised my speed from my MacBook Pro keyboard that I also love(d) (I use my laptop with an external monitor and keyboard while at home). Switching control with command via the SC2 menu sped me up a ridiculous amount because of how much more intuitively I use shortcuts with a Mac.
I'd love to experiment with mechanical keyboards some day, but it's not as feasible when you have to make sure to get a Mac layout with a command key and such. I know some of the more expensive ones let you do that (or at least let you pop it out yourself with a provided replacement key), but, as a college student, I only have so much money (yeah yeah, I know, this keyboard was $75, but a Filco or something is half again as much).
I bought this one about 2 weeks ago, and its by far the best keyboard ive ever used.
Aside from the fact that keyboard looks EXACTLY like my $6 LiteOn keyboard, the only thing that it has going for it is the anti-ghosting.
"The SteelSeries 6Gv2 features both PS/2 and gold-plated USB connectors as well as 18K gold-plated mechanical switches. Its increased response times and extreme durability make the SteelSeries 6Gv2 the ultimate keyboard option for gamers."
Gold plated stuff, does nothing and does not DECREASE (which is probably what they wanted to say) response time. Gold only affects analog signals. Your keyboard is a digital connection. It's either a 1 or a 0, thus copper does just as good a job.

$99 is a waste for that.
I have got this keyboard too and it may look EXACTLY like a standard keyboard but believe me it is far superior than any cheap rubber dome keyboard which it seems you have. This keyboard contains mechanical switches (black ones) which act differently to rubber dome (yours) to provide a better and unique feel as looks can be deceiving.
At first this keyboard didn't feel much different but once you have gotten fully used to it other keyboards aren't usable any more, king of like mouse acceleration.
I suggest you do some research before demeaning zdh and his keyboard.

Although I agree with the unnecessary need for gold-plated connectors, it's a mechanical keyboard, which is a big reason for the price tag.
Nope, I've used mechanical keyboards... and normal keyboards. I honestly notice the difference, but it's not worth it. I've gotten the $150 keyboards with mechanical keys, I've still got my $6 keyboard... I still prefer my $6 in both feel and price =P
I think it's 90% mental the "difference".
but maybe i just got really lucky with this keyboard. *shrug*
i use a razer lycosa, really like it too! my first legit keyboard... my previous one was one ive had since i was like 7 that was completely shitty... this is miles beyond it haha
M$ sidewinder x4, its really nize, not expensive, with some additional buttons for chat/pause macros =)
One of the few keyboards with red backlights (I hate blue^^) and good anti ghosting, not that it matters right now, but I remember those days of playing a micro machine like hotseat game years ago with friends or kiting a boss in WoW..isn't fun if your keyboard can't track more than 3 buttons..
Took a while to get used to the key layout (compared to my old keyboard the size is somewhat off. I can't explain it, but I missed some keys for a week..until my hit rating got up again xD) Only downside is that the driver doesn't remember the backlight setting and defaults to on, but not a big deal.
But I would really like to try out a mechanical keyboard once. People treat them like the §$%$ing holy grail. I just can't imagine how they can be that much better or how it must feel..I guess people who own mechanical keys know the taste of unicorn bacon too, 'cause it must be magic.. xD
Well I WAS using a iOne Scorpius M10 for 3 hours today (got delivered) until the left shift key was defective and got stuck when I pressed it down....After reading all these stories on how bad the quality is on that keyboard I was hesitant to order it but said fuck it, I'll take that chance and hope I get lucky...BUT NOPE just 3 hours in and it crapped on me.
I wouldn't recommend this keyboard to anyone looking for a mechanical one for a low price ($50-$60). Spend the extra money and get yourself a FILCO or any other brand of higher quality which is what I plan on doing once I get refunded.
Now to decide..do I want to stick with the blues or go with the browns...leaning towards the blues again since I liked the clickyness :3
Windows Digital Media Keyboard 3000, got one for 15€ or so. Have to say I like it although it has alot of useless keys and a bit different feel and placement than the standard keyboards. Love the small F keys that are pretty close and handy. I also use a 1€ wrist rest ( just above my wrist to be exact)with it so my hand is properly above the keys and the wrist is in a natural pose.
E. actually mine is different from the pic with a smaller left shift, but I´ve always preferred a small shift.
Just received Steelseries 6g v2. Far better than any non-mechanical keyboard I had tried. The feeling is really awesome. Sginificaltly cheaper than 7g.

I like that it's a bit lower profile, and I've never had an problems with ghosting or anything on it. I have the X6, with the detachable numpad (I actually put it on the left of the keyboard so my hands are in a more natural position when gaming because the mouse/left keyboard side, also its nice for typing betting amounts in poker ). I had to get used to the slightly different key-layout (the keys are a bit closer spaced), but now I love it. Keyboard has enough profile so you can locate your hand(s) relative to the keyboard, but not so much as mechanical or 'old-school'/M-type keyboards. Also, the force required to press keys is just to my liking (relatively light). Tried G15/G11 and traditional keyboards, even had an expensive mechanical one which I broke, and out of all of them I like this one the best. Knobs for volume and lighting are also awesome. Windows key can be easily disabled. If it broke I would instantly rebuy it. It has no flips on the back to put the keyboard at an angle, this could be a problem for some, but for me it's not since tilted keyboards make my wrists hurt like hell. Supposedly angled keyboards are bad for your wrists anyways so no surprises there.
It's around $80/60 euro iirc.
Edit: attached pic, numpad is detached on this pic. It's not good for anything with SC2 anyways
I use various ergo keyboards and fun keyboard i generally put a heavy t shirt over the keyboard and roll one end to use as a wrist rest. Which gives me a wrist rest, muffles the sound of the keys, keep the keyboard clean because only the t shirt gets dirty and also makes the feel of the keys a soft cotton lol :D only issue doing this is that you need to be a touch typist to do this.
I appologise up front if this is to much offtopic for this thread but I figured it was better than starting my own thread here.
I'm looking for a new keyboard, I want Cherry MX Brown switches but here comes the issue, I need one with a danish keyboard layout, I havnt been able to find any on the internet so I'm hoping for some help. My optimal keyboard would be: Background lid, Danish layout, Cherry MX Brown and no macro keys.
Now I realise that all of those things can be hard to find but if someone out there know of a keyboard with all of them that would be absolutly fantastic else filling out as many of the things as possible with suggestions would be very much appriciated
You'd probably be better off asking that question somewhere like www.geekhack.org. Most of their members are keyboard aficionados and would most likely have a better idea than the average poster here.
I used a Microsoft Wired 600 keyboard for a while. I actually really liked the feel, but the 'E' key died when I was playing SF4 (probably because of my 12e spam in sc2 ><).
Now I use an ABS M1 with Black ALPS. It's pretty good, but the actuation force is really high (around 70g) so I kinda want a Cherry MX Brown keyboard atm.

I've become so enamored with the idea of a mechanical keyboard that I'm almost positive I'm going to get a Filco Tenkeyless with Cherry Browns (oddly enough, I hadn't thought of selling my current keyboard until today -- such good condition [right around 50 days used, might as well be brand spanking new and I even have the box] will ensure I barely lose any money, I imagine).
Even just switching from this keyboard to my laptop one in class is starting to feel like a major downgrade, which makes me think that I'll be able to appreciate having a mechanical.
Does anyone know of a Filco "Command" key? I'm perfectly fine just keeping everything as is and remapping them, but it would be pretty sweet to actually have the real key for it. I seem to remember seeing one in the beginning of my research on mechanical keyboards, but I haven't come across a Filco one, specifically, since.

Going to have to give a different account. I bought the exact same keyboard and have been using it for about 2 or 3 weeks. No problems so far and it feels really nice. If you are looking for a moderately cheap keyboard, I'd go with this one. Blue switch keys are loud and I absolutely love that.
I currently use a G15v2 - it's served me well but reading all these posts about mechanical keyboards are making me really itch to buy one of those. It's been so long since I've had one. Last time I used one was when I was still on Windows 3.1...

So I basicly had a random Logitech 10€ keyboard for about all my life. A few days ago I thought it is time to get new technology. I bought the G110 from Logitech... and I returned it 3 days after my purchase. I just cant stand how close those Makro keys are to the regular keys and I keep hitting them very often accidently. I miss the orientation on this Layout. Also as a student I need to be able to type a while on it, but the keys are very hard to press and its getting pretty hard after 1-2 hours.
Though I loved the rest of the keyboard. And I'm looking for another one with the following conditions:
- Media keys, including Volume regulation - At least 1 USB slot - Luminated - No keys on the left side of the keyboard - Easier to press
Has anyone any suggestions? I'm really frustrated, that I cant find any keyboard with those conditions...
I use the unicomp customizer 101 in all black with black blanks, buckling spring still feels the nicest to me and no windows key for the win

While buckling springs are still held up as great for typists, I don't think that I would suggest them for someone who was going to be gaming with it. Besides that, ch4ppi, based on his requirements, seems to be looking for a more "modern" keyboard that you'd normally associate with gaming keyboards (illumination, extra USB ports, etc.). A keyboard with buckling springs just isn't appropriate for those needs at all.
Ch4ppi, I think you'd be best off looking at some Razer keyboards, like the new Blackwidow that is a mechanical keyboard with Cherry Blue switches. It's backlit and has all that extra stuff. The Das keyboard is one of the more popular mechanical keyboards, but some people aren't too happy with the build quality (mind you, people say that about Razer even more). I'm not sure if they have backlit ones, though. The ever popular and legendary Filcos are great and probably the most highly recommended, but they don't have extra ports or illumination. I think the "Decks" have most of what you want, but I honestly don't know much about those at all.
If you're looking for a non-mechanical keyboard, Razer is probably still a good place to look. I think the illuminated Saiteks are supposed to be pretty decent, too, but I'm not too up on the non-mechanical scene since I've had a laptop for a number of years now (and I'll be buying a Filco as my next keyboard since I use an external monitor and am getting a new desktop PC soon).
@Senzei It's pretty kind of u to give me advice, but it was completly off any conditions I made for a Keyboard that will fit me. @Char711 Thanks for the great Input. I checked out all of ure suggestions and the Razor keyboard seem to fit me the most. Though I'm curious because of the many bad experiences people get...
I keep feeling there is the "ch4ppi"-keyboard missing on the market...
I just bought a SIdewinder x4, seems perfect for sc2 since all i need is antighosting and backlighting (macros i dont care, i dont use). Bought it on sale, for you canadian shoppers, heres a good price!! buy it asap!

Personally I like this one compared to New Touch because of the clickity sounds that come out of it. New Touch is soft type one, quieter, but I don't like it since I don't get the feel of it. This ultra flat one feels like mechanical keyboards (but not) and much cheaper (around 14$ I believe).
Just got a Filco Majestouch with mx brown keys. Best keyboard ever! Used saitek cyborg for almost 6 years and I loved it, but the keys were wearing out. I got a Razor lycosa and that thing was a complete waste of money. The keys would malfunction and razor never responded back to me. Horrible customer service. stay the hell away from Razor keyboards, they're complete dog shit. Filco all the way, this keyboard is so soft and ez to type on. My APM in SC2 went up by about 5-10 APM and. Its super effective.

Just got it today, after using a G15 for years I can't tell you in words how awesome a mechanical keyboard feels. I enjoy typing now and I can't get over the awesome clicks sounds haha.

IIRC, Unicomp will sell you a bag of blank black keys with your keyboard for something like $25 or so (and maybe some other colours too) - email them for availability. That way you can replace the keycaps, pull off the ugly blue Unicomp numlock sticker and you've got yourself a poor man's Otaku!
Making black keys with white lettering uses a different dying process from the normal keys that Unicomp/IBM use, so your best bet for one of those is probably to trawl eBay and the like for one of the old IBM models that were made like that in the first place.

Definitely NOT mechanical:
"Due to the integral elastic rubber dome design, it can prevent the rubber dome from being easily misaligned after being subjected to impact or drop."
I just bought a 6gv2 keyboard after reading a bit about mech switches - my first impressions : The black Cherry MX keys are very lively (they give quite a feedback), they feel just a tiny bit heavier, but they feel great and robust, and give you the sensation that you can really abuse the keyboard and it will never fall apart. It does sound a bit louder than a rubber dome keyboard.
I can surely understand how the cherry browns might be better for typing, because of the feedback you get when the switch is actuated - the blacks need to be bottomed out so you can be sure the switch was pressed, which makes them ideal for button mashers. Overall great feel.
I also recently got a 6gv2. The black switches are a little bit heavier to press on and took a toll on my hands when I was spamming like crazy testing out my apm. My apm feels like its actually lower with the 6gv2 than my old stock keyboard.
Build quality of filco , blackwidow etc is nothing compared to these IBM style boards.
If you mean in pure durability maybe, but I own both a unicomp model m copy, a real model m and a filco with browns and the filco is far and away the best keyboard in terms of quality.
Steelseries 6gv2: good, but I didn't like the feel of black switches for every day typing and the ANSI layout was UK instead of US.
Blackwidow: also good although I didn't like the layout and the addition of macro keys that I would never use. I love the feel of blue switches, but my wife didn't like the sound. >_<
Filco majestouch w/ browns: perfect. Right layout and brown switches are a good compromise to the sound of blues.

I just picked mine up today and so far I'm loving everything but the right shift key spacing. The keyboard feels absolutely amazing and I strongly encourage anybody who either can't or won't get a filco and is currently using a membrane based keyboard. I love the simple look of it and can't believe how good it feels to use in action.
Razer Lycosa. I tried using a friend's plastic-keyed Logitech at his house the other day and about freaked out. The keys were so small and odd-shaped. I'll be damned if I use a non-Razer keyboard ever again unless there is a different brand just like mine. I fucking love this keyboard's keys, shape, and back light of sexiness.
Love it to death. It's got cherry blue mechanical switches, a little noisey but good. Prior to this keyboard i didn't know the specific locations of the "%" symbol was or the "$" symbol was, now i've forced myself to learn it!
It's also hilarious to watch people trying to type on this keyboard too, I had one girl over and it took her forever to type a single sentence. They should have these in school so kids are forced to learn how to type without looking at the keys.
Best keyboard world, I remember that some friend of my family had one of those years ago. I'm using the Razer Lycosa. Probably the best keyboard I've used, the keys got a really awesome feel to em.
i'm looking to get my first mechanical keyboard. really narrowed it down to the steelseries 6Gv2 or the Rosewill Cherry MX Switch Mechanical Keyboard. Does anyone have any suggestions for someone looking to switch to a higher quality keyboard?
never get this keyboard if you intend to eat lots and of cookies/chips because 99% of my keys well get some BS stuck underneath and I have to press hard as HELL to break it and all the buttons are really really slow to push down after what, 1 year of use maybe -.- I'm getting a new one HOPEFULLY today (december 3rd) otherwise I'll have to be strong untill x-mas

I'm thinking about snagging this board for Christmas as well. Blue switches are mostly for "pure typists" or something like that, but should work very nicely for gamers as well.
From what I've gathered, the Rosewill is probably one of the best Cherry Blue's on the market right now, cost-wise. It supposedly has the same OEM as the Filco boards, which should make it very, very nice.
I'm sitting tight and waiting for a sale though, because Rosewill already had 2 sales on that board. I'm wishing for a sale before Christmas.
Check out this review as well. It shows the controller (I don't know what you call it) with a stamp saying "Filco" on it.
A perfectly ordinary Logitech keyboard, deluxe 250 I think it's called. Though I have written "MAIM! KILL! DESTROY!" on it to remind me what starcraft, and gaming in general, is all about.
I was using a Saitek Eclipse I got for about $25, but wanted media keys, so I bought a G15 when they went on sale on Newegg for $30. It's taking a bit of getting used to...I keep hitting the bottom left macro key instead of ctrl, and the keys are lower profile than the Eclipse, but I think (hope) I'll get used to it...
The Eclipse was fantastic, though. Very responsive and flashy.
I've got a Microsoft Sidewinder x6... Only got it cause I was building my pc, and wanted everything to have a glow to it ... Also, I had like $200 credit at EBGames, and needed something to pump it into.
Using a Filco Majestouch(tenkeyless) with Brown switches. Have to say I was a little skeptical but figured with as many people as there were nerdgasming over it/mechanicals that it would be worth a try. After a week or so I tried typing on my previous rubber dome keyboard and have to say I will never type on one again if at all possible. This is probably one of the best purchases I ever made for my computer.

I've used several brands in the past, and microsoft keyboards in particular I've found to be much more cumbersome.
cant stand those dell keyboards. they have em at school, tried to play sc2 on the keyboards, and it was terrible. keys feel like mush and they dont feel tactile at all. its like pressing on jello that you only left in the fridge for like 2 hours or so... i dont like them.
I used Dell QuietKey until I recently visited Seoul and picked up 2 DT35s. I wouldn't say the DT35 is better, but there are differences that are more based on personal preference than superior features
- DT35 has closer spacing between keys and smaller keys compared to the Quietkey. This means you can ctrl+6/7 much easier on the DT35 than Quietkey. On the other hand, if you have big (not long) fingers, you might find yourself hitting the wrong keys with the DT35. My preference is for the DT35 in this regard
- The keys are always higher as you move up in rows on the DT35. For the Quietkey, there is a concave where the second row (shift z x c...shift) is the lowest. The height spacing between the two keyboards are also different, but without taking a picture its difficult to describe. There is a bigger difference between the lowest and highest keys on the DT35 than on the Quietkey. I don't have a strong preference for this either way.
- The keystroke feedback and finish on the keys are different. DT35 has a firmer feel and a rougher finish, whereas the Quietkey has a softer feel with a semi-gloss finish. The Quietkey is probably made to be quieter, and it is noticeably so when inputting keystrokes. However, I prefer the heavier feedback of the DT35 to the soft feedback on the Quietkey.
- DT35 has a few extra keys to switch between Korean and English input. Doesn't seem to do anything on English version of W7. DT35 also has Korean printed on the keys (in addition to english), which gives me the illusion that I am semi-pro Korean (I am n00b Chinese). Preference goes to DT35 for this.
Personally I prefer the DT35 over the Quietkey mostly because of the closer spacing with the keys, which makes it easier for me to macro as I can access control groups 1-7 with ease. I noticed that my average APM went from 80 to 100 after switching to the DT35 as well. I bought the keyboard for about $10 USD each so it is well worth it, but I probably wouldn't pay the $30 or so it costs to buy it imported here. I think Koreans use it because it suits smaller hands, but for Europeans with larger hands it is probably not optimal.

70g is around where most keyboards are, speaking of rubber dome, it's not really alot of force the diff is that you have a spring always pushing back up on you which makes it feel like it's more.

(I bought a SpaceSaver to replace, or as a spare for, the Customizer which had had a liquid spill that corroded the membrane. Took me a month or two to get all the fiddly little bits I needed, but I did eventually fix my Customizer, whee!)
I used the steelseries 6gv2 before it was cool (IdrA)! I've spilled coffee on this thing like six times and it still runs flawlessly, definitely good for my clumsy ways. I've heard some people saying black switches suck for typing, but I've never really encountered anything like that yet, and it's hard to go back to a membrane keyboard after using mechanical =P
Yesterday, finally I got my hands on Filco Majestouch 104 cherry brown switches. After searching around and spend couple of weeks going around for small research, I finally decided to get Filco brown. I tried Razer blackwidow, Steelseries 6g, Filco black, blue and brown. And I decided to get the brown one.
Razer blackwidow feels too light, and somehow I feel that the keys and the design is not solid / robust on blackwidow.
Steelseries looks great, but the keys a bit heavier to type on, and I can't get any "feel" when typing on it (maybe because it's non tactile?). Tried the Filco black, and it feels more or less the same with the SS 6g. And since I mostly use my keyboard for typing, the only options left for me is either brown or blue switches. It takes me a while to decide between the two, but finally I decided on the brown one. The blue switch is great, and I must say that I love the "clicky" sound (it reminds me of IBM keyboard that I used long time ago . However I think that the brown switch has the "weight" that just perfect for me, blue switch feels a bit too light for my fingers.
And now I'm officially retiring my lovely and loyal Logitech keyboard (Logitech ultraflat). I've been using logitech for so long and I love it, still use Logitech one for work in the office.
Final words: This filco keyboard cost 10x higher compare to my old logitech keyboard (nowadays I can get it for around 12-15$), and I honestly can't say that the Filco is 10x better for my day to day use (mostly typing and light gaming). But .. it's exotics :D .. and that's my main reason why I burn my money for it .
My advice for anyone who wants to buy a keyboard, including myself for future buying: either get low (10-15$ keyboard) or aim high (100+$ mechanical keyboard). Anything between that is just not worth the money.
i actually love my razor lycosa, ive heard a lot about the razor products being over priced and cheap crap etc. but my deathadder and my lycosa are both amazing, and i got them both on sale anyway i literally will join sc2 games just so i can hammer away at my keys, and win or loss i feel happy.

I have this keyboard. Love the fact that it isn't bulky, but I absolutely DREAD the position of the question mark key. Its oddly spaced to the right of the 2nd shift key and confuses the hell out of me constantly. the compactness is a good feature if you don't like wide keyboards, but the keys feel too cluttered together. I'd definitely suggest going with another brand.
Best/most comfortable keyboard I have ever owned; only $7 too. I did have to buy a PS/2 to USB converter which was another $7 but it was worth it. I have played sc2 on the Marauder, Lycosa, and even a bit on a Black Widow and though these keyboards are definitely nice I don't see why I would ever pay so much for one when this guy feels just as good for only $7.
the small backspace key is no prob for me, even though i only used my keyboard for a month (keytronic e03601) from a nice compaq keyboard, and the thing is that i used to press my backspace key all the way on the right side, so i have no problem with the small backspace
you got to get used to it though
very nice hard keys, i think i posted about it before
Does anyone know if there are any cherry clear/brown switch keyboards out there that are high quality and ship to Canada?
I want to get a mechanical keyboard, but Filco apparently doesn't use those switches anymore, blue switches make a lot of noise (which I don't want) and blacks don't have tactility and require tons of force (I really like the look of the Steel series 6Gv2 but I'd rather not gamble on it with the blacks).
I have a Steelseries 7G, was really sceptical about getting it at first, due to the black switches, but the keyboard is definetly understimated. The 7G feels really slick, it's really heavy and have a sweet metallic feel to it, never had such a solid keyboard. Best keyboard I've ever used, and I've tried Filco with brown switches and das keyboard with blue.
I'm currently using a Logitech EX110 wireless keyboard. Bought it about two years ago and still going strong, but I've had the batteries die out during a Starcraft 2 ladder session. Also some of the keys are being stubborn and don't want to respond to my keypresses, so that's become quite annoying.
However, I'm soon to be using a Filco Cherry MX Brown Tenkeyless ordered from PCHome over in Taiwan! They have an awesome deal going on where it's only $10 shipping to anywhere in the United States.
If you can't wait for EliteKeyboards to get the Leopolds in stock, I'd say bite on this deal and go get a Filco while you still can!
I had some xtra money burning a hole in my pocket. It wasnt even my 1st or 2nd choice. But now that I have it, I absolutely love it. But I did not like the color changing macros and alerts, they were too distracting. So I just have the keys lit blue.
currently using a Logitech EX110 as well... but it has some serious problem...giving random disconnect and slow response on key registration. However it is very convenient as a media keyboard. Re-ordered my Zowie Celeritas since it had a defect on it..and it feels very good when typing and playing on it!

Blacks are not that bad i'm on a g6 right now and the one thing i dont like about it playing any fps or like wow or anything hurts after a few hours, also it's hard to type on keys that are not black switches, because there so easy to press.

What you get from lasered keys which are non coated. Use isopropyl 99% to clean them and it will look as good as new again.

In both OS X and Windows 7 I've never had it mess up in any way. I've had it for over a semester (somewhere around 5 months, I'd say) now and the original batteries that it came with are actually still in it.
Logitech G110 at the moment. Not the greatest board I've ever bought, but it does the job better than my old minimal flat key one did lol, felt like I was playing on a laptop.
Will be migrating to a mechanical board in the next 6-12 months for sure.
About a week ago or two I got my filco 105key majestouch 'otaku' cherry mx browns. Loving it so far, feels awesome. Its actually funny that when my g15 died completely I started looking for a keyboard that was as simple looking as the dell keyboard, had 105 keys (small left shift, <|> button next to it) and could take over 4+ keys pressed at once (atleast, that was a big problem I saw with the cheap dell.). I didnt see the filco right away somehow... but then I saw it and it was the perfect keyboard :D. It also looks awesome (I bought the red esc key and purple WASD, breaks up the black a bit :p)
Mechanical is definitely the way to go, and I'm very happy with the brown-switches, I couldn't feel them before buying so I was a bit worried, but I definitely made the right choice.
as for expensive: yes its expensive especially where I live, but it should last for a very long time. I got mine from keyboardco.com (they stopped selling the blank key ones after I bought mine :x)
Yup. That's my most powerful computer as of now. A laptop. It accompanies my desktop's Microsoft Wireless Optical mouse (soon to be replaced with a new, cheap, ~$10 mouse so I don't have to steal it from my brother all of the time).
I really hope I don't break the keyboard from spamming (I've actually been restraining a lot, since it's brand new).

The Leopold FC200RT with brown switches. I have it for almost three weeks and damn I not going back to membranes anymore! I hate going to work where they have membranes but working on my macbook is still okayish ^^

is that a HP envy?
It's actually an HP Pavilion dm4. However, both Envy and Pavilion share similar keyboards, so in a way, it's the same keyboard.
I can proudly say that I’m a new owner of a tenkeyless Filco Majestouch keyboard with cherry MX brown switches. It arrived in the mail earlier today from PCHome but I haven’t had a chance to take it out for a spin until now.
Before reading, I suggest you take a look at these two links to familiarize yourself with mechanical keyboards:
Price This is a top-of-the-line, high-quality keyboard marketed for Japan and made and sold in Taiwan. A Filco Majestouch, tenkeyless, with cherry brown switches. The cost from PCHome?
A very cheap 116 USD.
“Very cheap?!”
Yes, very cheap. Mechanical keyboards are not your run-of-the-mill membrane keyboard that you get from Walmart or other cheapy stores. These keyboards last for-freakin-ever and are very consistent with the feedback you receive from typing. If you haven’t checked out the guides up top, go look!
There was a promotion where PCHome was selling anything in their global store with a shipping cost to anywhere in the world for a measly 10 USD.
If you’ve ever bought anything from a foreign country before, you know how expensive shipping can be.
Normally on a purchase like this, shipping itself would come out to 40 USD. This is huge savings for me.
Total cost of the keyboard with shipping: 126 USD.
Rating: 9/10. I would have loved it if the keyboard was priced a little less, but for a high-quality peripheral I can’t really complain about the price. This thing is worth way more than any other crappy keyboard you could get from a big box store.
Packaging and shipping The box itself from PCHome was badly damaged. There was a break in the box that looked like someone punched his or her fist right through. The protective bubble sheet (not sheets) that they used was all popped except for one.
The Filco Majestouch box itself was near perfect though. The keyboard itself? Immaculate condition. it was covered with a plastic sleeve and also accompanied by a yellow WASD cluster, a keycap puller, and two Filco keys (one red/black, the other black/purple). Also included was a PS2/USB adapter. Awesome!
I ordered the keyboard on February 5th to take advantage of the promotion as well as the stock that PCHome had.
For some reason unbeknownst to me, it was sent from Taiwan to New York to Honolulu to Kauai. Why not just ship it straight to Oahu, then to Kauai? I understand that foreign mail must go through customs, but I don’t understand why my keyboard had to take the long route. Disappointing in a way, but it made receiving my package that much more rewarding.
Perhaps it was the 10 USD price where the packages could only be sent one way, but I probably won’t figure it out.
Rating for packaging: 4/10. The box and protection for mailing were crap. I would have expected such a high-quality product to be protected much more than it was. The Majestouch box and packaging was very neat, and included a lot of nifty freebies. Still doesn’t make up for the fact that my keyboard could have been DOA.
Rating for shipping: 5/10. I don’t understand why they had to take the long route, but it was probably due to the extremely cheap shipping. The board still made it here in less than two weeks (which included Chinese New Year) so I can’t hate on it too badly.
The feel The feeling of this keyboard is definitely much nicer than that of the Logitech EX110 wireless keyboard that I was using earlier. It feels a lot lighter and nicer on my hands. As such I’m currently trying to get a used to the feel of the actuation point as I tend to bottom out on this keyboard because it’s so light on the fingers! This one is set as 45g. My old Logitech keyboard needed 70g in order for a key to register.
This means a much more comfortable gaming session for me as I won’t need to push down on the keys so hard. I also like the fact that all of my keypresses register. With my old keyboard, the receiver would miss letters or spam them really hard. I’m pretty sure it was the wireless aspect of it rather than the mechanical keys itself.
When they say that a cherry brown is tactile touch, they mean it. When I push down on the keyboard, I can feel a slight bump letting me know that I’ve pushed down the key. I thought it was going to be equivalent to haptic feedback on an iPhone or Android device but it isn’t of that intensity. It’s a lot lighter and almost like a gentle massage for your fingers.
Rating: 10/10. I don’t think I’ve ever typed on anything else that’s felt as good as this keyboard. Absolutely amazing.
The sound A lot of people who are new to mechanical keyboards and who have not had any experience with them (including myself) were concerned about the sound that a mechanical keyboard would make. After hearing the sound and pitch of a cherry blue keyboard, I decided I’d take a shot and go with a brown switched keyboard since it doesn’t have the high pitch that the blue one does.
I am very, very satisfied in how this one turned out. When I don’t bottom out, the keyboard sounds just a little louder than the rubber dome keyboard I was using earlier. It is not very intrusive and other people in my household can’t hear it from the other rooms. WIN! Now I’m free to play in some late night SC2 games at my disposal without having to worry about the sound keeping others awake.
But for those who have tank fingers and bottom out a lot, this is one loud keyboard. It’s equivalent to someone pounding his or her finger straight into the desk. I’m pretty sure that it’ll take a lot of time to get used to the switch and how much you need to push the key in order for it to register.
Rating: 9/10. I love the quietness of the keyboard for my personal tastes. It is a little louder than the EX110 I was using before but I’ll sacrifice that any day for ergonomics and quality. But if you have heavy fingers, I suggest you stay away from blue switches and go with something more muted.
The build quality This thing is built like a tank. It’s very heavy (unlike my old keyboard) and almost half the size as it is a tenkeyless version. It takes some force in order to move it anywhere over my desk; one finger isn’t enough unless I push it really, really hard. This can only mean good news for playing SC2 as my old keyboard had a tendency to move all over the place when spamming keys mid-battle.
I’m not a big fan of the keycaps. They’re very slippery and don’t have much of a grip on them. It’s one of the first things I noticed when I started typing out this review. I think that can be remedied by purchasing an order of keycaps separately, but I’m going to try and enjoy this keyboard while getting used to the touch and feel before spending anymore extra on accessories for it.
The placement of the keys are nice. As it is a tenkeyless I need to get used to the compact layout overall of my desk, which includes my mouse now being a lot closer to where my keyboard hand will be.
Rating: 9/10. The keycaps are very disappointing, they feel very slippery and they also get shiny pretty fast. Otherwise it’s a beautiful keyboard.
Function I took at typing speed test with my old Logitech keyboard this past weekend, and it gave me anywhere from 75-90 WPM. With the Filco, I was consistently hitting around 90 WPM with little to no fluctuation. As I get used to the layout of the keyboard I’m sure that the number will increase.
There are also no media keys on the keyboard. This might be a dealbreaker for some as they’re looking to have a keyboard that does extra stuff for them, but this doesn’t concern me at all. I bought this keyboard specifically for SC2.
After playing a custom game on SC2 against a master league Zerg (diamond Protoss myself) I was able to see how less work I needed in order to input commands as needed. It was very easy on the fingers and I can see why so many professionals decided to go with a mechanical keyboard. Amazing stuff!
(I did win that game )
Rating: 9/10. While I would have loved to have media macro keys on here for use during SC2, I’m pretty sure I can find a way to remap a few keys on the keyboard.
Overall I hope this helps anyone out there looking for a mechanical keyboard and is unsure whether or not to make the jump. Prior to reading about them I didn’t think I would enjoy nor need a keyboard over $50 much less $100+. Now I’m very glad that I bought this board.
Rating: 9.5/10
Looking forward to hearing all of your success stories later!
ok guys. i have been using a superold noname keyboard for years now and i still would, but my gf bought me a logitech g510 yesterday, fuck yeah !
typing feels really soft, i like the multimedia-buttons on it, same with the mute/disble-windows-button and most of the other extras too. despite all that, i dont think that this keyboard is the right one for me to play. for example, i played some sc2 at my friends place, he owns a g110, which have pretty the same layout. the first thing is, that i always hitted one of the stupid g-keys instead of ctrl, same with escape-key.
i know, i takes time getting used to it, but i just dont want to. i dont even need those macro/g-keys, since im not a MMO-player. same with the (mini-)display, seems unnecessary to me. --
im not too much into gaming-keyboards, but im looking around a bit at amazon (since the g510 came with amazon too, sending it back wouldnt be a problem)
what i want: a normal, wired keyboard, i dont need a display or extra macro-keys possibility to plug-in my headset to the keyboard (didnt know about that until yesterday) would be nice maybe multimedia-buttons to pause/etc. music. i dont know anything about mechanical keyboards (pros/con, etc.) budget: well, the g510 is about 90 euros @amazon.de =~ 120$. iw would be okay if its cheaper though
what i found until now:
razer lycosa / arctosa (lycosa is my favourite til now) razer marauder - is this thing worth the money ? probably not
it doesnt have to be razer-stuff, but i love their mice, im using my deathadder for years now
would be nice if someone could tell me about the lycosa/etc. or recommend other keyboards. thanks in advance.
I have a Saitek Cyborg that I got for Christmas a couple years back. It's overpriced and frickin' huge, and I'm never actually going to use the 12 macro keys on the side, because 1.) I don't need them, 2.) I'm too lazy to figure out how to work it and 3.) I'd have to look down away from the screen to use them.
But it's all good because it LIGHTS UP. :D Yeeeeeeeah!
Wow I'm impressed with how this thread has become some sort of base for keyboard/mouse discussion!
As I said a few months ago, I have a SteelSeries 7G (it uses Cherry MX Black switches) however after using it for a while, I now think it's more suited to the FPS or RPG player (those holding the keys down rather than pressing short and quickly).
Cherry MX Black switches seem to give more resistance to your fingers, making them ache more if you're playing a high APM game (a la Starcraft...); although in general mechanical keyboard terms they are pretty quiet, it's just becoming a bit too much of a strain for my hands as I'm a solid 150-200 APM player...
My problem is, I'm seriously considering spending another ~£100 to get a Filco Majestouch with Cherry MX Blues (heard great things about blues), but don't have anywhere near me (that I know of..) to test the switches out before buying, because, who knows... maybe Browns suit me better?
Can anyone who has experienced using Cherry MX Blacks, Blues and Browns give their opinion?
I'm also a web designer and java programmer, so typing plays a big role in my day-to-day lifestyle.. another thing I've heard Blue switches are favourable for..
Finally, take into account, I have quite small hands ( can't reach Shift+8 ) so also wondering if Filco keyboards offer anything different in that aspect compared tothe SS 7G?
Looks "fancy" but the only reasons I got it was because it had a close resemblance to my previous keyboard, and I wanted volume up/down + mute keys.
I really don't feel like I need macro keys to "up my play". Just get something you feel comfortable with, the previous keyboard I had before this one was a cheap 9,99$ logitech standard keyboard, and I dare say it was the best damn keyboard i've had. I tried buying the exact same model but couldn't find it anywhere
I have one of these too. I'll be honest here, I bought it for the lights. :X I think it looks awesome.

i use this one too, very good cheap and confortable
Using the Steelseries 6Gv2 myself since Christmas (was a present). I love it. Definitely feels more responsive than my $14 logitech keyboard that I was previously using. Built like a tank, which I love. Amazing for FPS games (CS:S), but I also feel the difference and appreciate it for RTS games.
Realforce 86U (Also, Filco Tenkeyless with Cherry MX Brown at work)
Same here. I've also got a filco majestouch with browns in it and honestly the realforce is waaaay nicer to type on. I have to say my favorite thing though on the 86u is swapping the caps-lock and ctrl buttons. Makes it so much easier to game with my smallish hands
Currently have a Lycosa, after switching from a G15 awhile back. Currently in the market for a mechanical keyboard (not that I don't like the Lycosa, I love the flat keys), most likely going to go with a Das Ultimate.
Im looking for a new keyboard, there is so much price difference between them, but i dont really know whats the difference between a 130$ razer or a random 50$ keyboard. I played on a cheap keyboard till now and made it into masterleague. What do you guys advice ?

I have this, and I'm soooo used to it by now XD It's cheap, but it works perfectly. The only problem I have with it is that I've never bothered to clean it and have had it for a good 5-6 years.

Blues are amazing for typing, however for the environment I work in, the auditory feedback (loud click) will drive me and the people around me crazy, as such I settled with a Cherry MX Brown keyboard which is pure typing bliss and gaming. It clicks, but not too loud, and its tactile ( you can feel it)
I would go with Cherry MX Browns, if you can get a chance to try all three, go for it, but a hard and fast answer would be to go with Cherry MX Browns, not that Blues are bad. In fact Boxer himself uses a Filco Majestouch w/ Cherry MX Blues.
I suggest you check out some mechanical keyboard guides.

If you're still doing fine with your keyboard, there really isn't any reason to switch.
But if you must get a new keyboard, the only way to go is mechanical. There's no benefit in any other rubber dome or membrane keyboard, they're pretty much all the same and you're just paying for bells and whistles.
A great mechanical keyboard will last you forever. Examples of these are the Rosewill RK-9000 and Razer BlackWidow (cherry blues), Filco and Leopold (cherry browns), and Steelseries 6Gv2 and 7G boards (cherry blacks).
Unless you're a purist, you probably won't need topre switches.
Check out my review on the Majestouch a page back or so, and read the guides that I posted on there. Hopefully that will give you a better opinion on what a mechanical keyboard is and what it could potentially do for you.
A generic keyboard from my local store, with extra buttons for play/pause, mute, volup/down, homepage etc stuff. Nothing great, but works like a charm never had a problem with it (suprising, considering it cost like 5LVL (10 bucks) or so)
Anyone know if there's any way to switch out the black keys on a 6gv2 for white ones like MKP's keyboard? Or do I have to get a FILCO or another one to be able to do that?
FILCO no longer use the Cherry switches, at least not from what I've seen. They've switched to Topre mechanism. I was looking at getting the Majestouch with the Cherry browns, so was kinda disappointed when I finally decided to grab one since I was kinda hooked on that particular switch type.
I ended up getting my SS 6Gv2 monday. I happen to use backslash a lot, so it's a little frustrating at first, but other than that, it feels great and the keyboard just looks solid. Really stupid decision to go back to the giant enter key and shorten the shift key to put backslash there, but I suppose I'm already getting used to it.
Only other complaint with the 6Gv2 is that the lettering on the keys are what appear to be decals or painted on. I get the feeling most of these will be nameless keys by the end of the month, but we'll see.
Who knows, maybe I'll find a Cherry brown keyboard I like and get another backup... you know... just in case.

flico uses cherry switches... you may be thinking just of elite keyboards .com? org? which will no longer be holding flicos but you can still buy flicos from other sites you'll just have to ship them internationally.
Ah, gotcha. I always defaulted to elitekeyboards because most of the other sites I found didn't ship internationally or prices were... well... international shipping...
If anyone in Canada needs to purchase a new keyboard, I have brand new Samsung Qsenn DT-35 from Korea. I have both white and black and selling them for $35 dollars each. [or $45 if you want to buy a checkered keyboard that looks something like this]

This is the best non-mechanical keyboard on the market, and its so rare in NA. If you are on a tight budget and need to get the job done you should send me a pm and we can talk more about it.
P.S - Many notable starcraft 2 players use this keyboard so you know this is reliable. To name a few, Liquid-Ret, TLO, IMNestea, WemadeFoxMoon, DeMuslim.

Any semi decent computer store will have steel-series products; along with their keyboards.
But i can't speak because i obviously dont live there. lol Just look up computer stores in the local phonebook and call?
Yeah i don' t live there either, i' m just going on vacation tomorrow and since steelseries products aren' t all that common in Greece i thought i' d just buy it from there, cheers man
The one attached to this macbook. Thanks to the command key whenever I now play on a PC I look like an octopus trying to play as I fumble around for the ctrl key.

had been using the same DELL cheap keyboard that came with my old desktop (when i've got no knowledge in building 1).. how long had it been...7 years or so already.
Recently switched to Razer BlackWidow after it is launched and am quite satisfied with it
I noticed alot of people complain about low profile keys not being good for RTS. Why is that? Personally I've always felt more comfortable with low profile keys so just wondering what I'm missing out on.

Nothing. Different people like different things. That's why rubber dome keyboards, low profile keyboards, cherry blue switches, cherry brown switches and cherry black switches all suck for gaming and typing and everything else you do with a keyboard.

You know, I love my razer black widow and its clicky mechanical keys despite what they may tell you about razer keyboards. However, I have tried the arctosa and lycosa, and they are not on the same level as my Black Widow at all.
(Hey, its also one of the cheaper high build quality mechanical keyboards on the market)
Is there anyone here using the Zowie Celeritas? How would you say the quality is compared to say, a Filco? Still haven't decided on what I want to get.
I got a Zowie Celeritas, the overall quality is really nice. I don't have a Filco to compare it to though. The one problem there is is the key printing. It fades really fast if you use it much. I've had my main keys for Starcraft get "darker" over time. You can still read them ok, but if you look at the num pad for example you can see a difference. Other than that it's by far the best keyboard I've had.
Just got my steelseries 6gv2 in the mail today. I got it for a great deal (50$ !!!) so I guess that makes it sweeter too. but I would definitely recommend this keyboard to anyone.
Does anyone know a stockist of Filco Majestouch (with Browns) or the Zowie Celeritas that can do Next Day shipping to the UK and is in stock?
Keyboardco are out of stock of US layout Filco's (want US cos of larger left shift), and all UK suppliers of Zowie Celeritas are out of stock also (from what I know).
Would take 5-8 days for delivery from Zowie official shop
My mom just ordered me a zowie for a gift because it was left up on her computer when I came over for dinner the other night. shes so nice! so now i have a zowie coming up and 6gv2 that i need to get rid of. PM me if anyones interested in us
nothing beats this baby in price-value. got it for 5 euro and i am playing like qxc :D
(at least i got much better ^.^)
best 5 euro in my life so far
Honestly, thats the keyboard that every computer in my school uses.
For me, i just game on the keyboard that came with the computer my grandfather bought. It isn't really a gaming keyboard, but it has music controls on it so i can change songs while casting me playing SC2 :3
After a month of use, gotta recommend the Noppoo Choc Mini (with brown switches) to everyone looking for a mechanical keyboard.
I don't see how there could be a better keyboard, even a Filco would seem worse (though I never used it).
Pros (excluding the switches which are the inherent goodness of all mechanical keyboards): - compact design but normal layout - close F-keys make positional hotkeys a lot easier to use - ctrl/caps-lock switch functionality (although I'm not sure I'll ever get around to using this one) - USB with full n-key rollover
Cons: - keys are impossible to see in the dark (not really a problem if you know to type fast anyways) - you have to order it from Taiwan
edit: Posted about this in other thread just before this, I just though I should put my thoughts on it here since I meant to give my impressions on the keyboard before anyway and that thread reminded me about it.
GOGO Black Widow!!!! I love this keyboard!!! Have tried the 6 and 7 G's and they just dont feel the same!
That's probably because they literally don't feel the same. :p The Steelseries keyboards have black switches, and your Black Widow has blue switches. You feel a bump with blue switches and they make a clicky noise, while Black ones are linear and aren't supposed to click.
Reading this thread makes me feel like an outcast, since I'm not using a mechanical keyboard but one of those "gaming" keyboards that are supposed to be oh-so terrible for SC2.
I like my G15 very much. It's sturdy, the keys have a nice feedback and it's good for work and other games as well. The backlight is useful when playing at night and the display is cool for displaying time, unread mails, who's talking on TS etc.

I don't believe they make them anymore. It was also known as the Auravision EluminX. For the price you pay for a used one or a new one today, you might as well spend the money and get a mech kb or save the money and get a mech kb.

I like my G15 very much. It's sturdy, the keys have a nice feedback and it's good for work and other games as well. The backlight is useful when playing at night and the display is cool for displaying time, unread mails, who's talking on TS etc.
One of my friends who I convinced to get a Filco with browns (which is what I also have) had a G15 before that. After using the Filco for 2 weeks he tried his old G15 for the lols ans said it felt like trying to type with a sponge.
nothing beats this baby in price-value. got it for 5 euro and i am playing like qxc :D
(at least i got much better ^.^)
best 5 euro in my life so far
This is the best $10 i spent as well.Had a g15 but i hated the keys on the left(macro keys). They just got in the way and it does feel really spongie)
This keyboard is SO easy to use (control and shift key are easy to hit) If you cant afford a mechanical keyboard get this one.Or save your money and get this one!

I threw away my G15 after i wrote and played on a mechanical keyboard for the first time
This is pretty much what happens to anyone who tries a mech keyboard... I have seen exactly *one* person choose rubber dome over mech, and it wasn't even a price thing. There's probably a ton of people who would switch, but never try because of the price.
And I would say G15 has the best feeling keys for any rubber dome too.
Need to get myself a tenkeyless with blues... although I can't complain with the das and browns I have right now
Razer Actrossa or MacBook Air build in keyboard depending on where I play.
Razer I love so so much as I've used it for some time and am unbelievably used to it.
MacBook keyboard is great because F keys are so close and cmd is in a better position than ctrl so you can reach further down the keyboard as it's more central.
Also got an old keyboard I ripped all none zerg hotkeys out of but don't use it much since I now play Random and missing certain hotkeys wouldn't be so great.
I'm on my second at the moment; I broke the spring of the '3' button a while ago. Now I got my second, which has the same problem with the '3', but now with the 'b' button. I still have a 3rd of this one lying somewhere... need to find it. :D
Logitech Illuminated. Actually not a gaming keyboard, but i just fell in love with the how it feels to stroke its keys and the very decent yet stylish lighting. Easily one of the best keyboards i've had so far in terms of looks and typing.
HHKB Pro 2, feels like typing on a clay tablet. I enjoy cherry switches as much as anyone but topre capacitives aren't only more fun to use but more ergonomic as well. If you need your F keys/capslock/arrows try a Realforce tenless keys.

Too bad I don't have a spare 300USD~ to get a topre board, I heard the sound on the keyboard tester and absolutely fell in love with the muted "thud" when pressing on the keys.
My new FILCO Majestouch 2 tenkeyless with brown switches and german Layout should be arriving from keyboardco.com anyday now.
For those interested in something with US- Layout, u should be taking a look at the new arrival at keyboardco.com. The Majestouch-2 Tenkeyless NKR ASCII with Red Switch.
The Keyboard Company is now selling the Filco Majestouch-2 tenkeyless with Cherry MX Red switches through their web site and Amazon. Red switches are linear with no click like blacks, but are light-weight like browns and blues. I don't know if they're better for any particular purpose, but it might be something interesting for the adventurous to try. I don't know what revisions the Majestouch-2 has over the original...
just got my razer blackwidow, and so far i love it. the clickity clickity is great. gotta get used to those macro keys on the left, but other than that its great.

I've been using my Filco Majestouch Tenkeyless, brown switches for a few days and all I can say is: so THIS is how a REAL keyboard works! My previous keyboard feels like typing on a sponge now. I find it difficult to define what it is that feels so good about it, but my fingers approve of the purchase. Is it worth the money? Depends on what your budget is, but I'm pleased with this investment.
Is my current keyboard, its a pink filco majestictouch cherry mx brown switch. I know the j and the k keys are the wrong way round, changed them after taking the photo. The black keys are from my old steelseries 7g, the keys are pretty much the same height and work really well together.
just got my 6gv2. it feels pretty damn weird coming to this from rubber dome, i dunno ill have to get used to it before i make any judgement i think.
Same keyboard here, at first i felt the keys was hard to press, now i have no problem playing at very high apms without getting any tired on my left hand.
I just took delivery of a Ducky board from Taiwan! Loving the clicky and the keys are much easier to press. Not sure if it actually improves performance but they definitely feel nicer.
It was quite a tedious process with hassle from Parcelforce and extra customs fees but probably worth it. Duck 1008 with Cherry MX Browns:

TL store doesn't sell mouse / keyboards I was passing on a good offer in threads that have tons of people searching for good deals on these two items. Been plenty of other people passing on similar offers and on other items like HD, PCs, Monitors. Don't like it then don't check it out but there is no "Deals" forums no need to be a prick about it.

Das Keyboard Ultimate, Model S.
That looks sexy, but it does look shopped.
So the one on the official site is shopped too, right?
Yeah it does, the keys look really weird.
Please just stop posting. A lot of people on here, including me, own one.
Didnt say it didnt exsist, just said that picture looks terrible. It must be a great keyboard as so loads of people have said so many great things about it, I was just stating my subjective view about that picture.
the das keyboard without lettering on the website definitely is shopped, no doubt about it. if you've worked with photoshop as much as i have, your eyes are pretty quickly drawn to the sloppy brush work that you really want to avoid more for personal reasons than practical ones, since nobody else is really going to see them but you just really want to prove to yourself that you're good with brushes
anyway, yeah, the pictures are shopped, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a blank version of the das keyboard since there definitely is. it's not hard to just not send the keycaps through the printer. in fact, i'm sure that it saves some money. so i can't see why anyone wouldn't believe that guy when he says that he has a blank keyboard.
also, can someone explain to me the reason they got backlit keyboards? i really don't get the purpose of them. a dedicated gamer or typist shouldn't ever have to look at their keyboard. and yet, gamers buy more backlit keyboards than any other demographic, despite being the one with possibly the least need for them.
is there anywhere else to buy like filco keyboards where we don't have to wait for 1month? Or is there any keyboard that lasts long, great quality etc with blue or brown switches. Please PM me!

If you're in Korea, you can just get Leopolds. They're made and sold right there.

In that case, Amazon has Filcos in stock. Supplied from Keyboardco. I have no idea how long shipping is going to take, but I'd figure if it says "Fulfilled by Amazon" then they already have it in their warehouses.
Alternatively you can try PCHome or Armygroup. Use the guides from Geekhack (which have been posted in this thread as well as the majority of the other mechanical keyboard threads) to help you order a board. Shipping is fairly quick, you can receive your board in a week or two.
I checekd Amazon and all they have is red switch apparently for 160+bucks and red switches are worthless, so I will try PCHome or Armygroup. Thanks for the tips.

From a FPS gaming standpoint, reds are the best switches to use. Low actuation plus linear force makes for a very awesome gaming keyboard. In fact, reds have been the new craze on forums like Geekhack and OCN. The reason why everyone has been jumping on reds now is they weren't widely available a year ago. With different keyboard manufacturers like Filco, KBC, and others now jumping on the bandwagon you should see the red switches rise in popularity.
From a SC2 point of view, a lot of players use the SteelSeries boards which have black switches. Removing 20g of force while still having a linear feel? Throw those blacks out and get reds instead. Makes it much easier on a player's fingers when doing anything with the keyboard.
If you don't mind missing out on the tactile bump that blues and browns provide, why not give cherry reds a shot?
I use a Logitech K300, and it fits me like a glove. I got it for extremely cheap on boxing day (12$... normally around 40$) I love it because it's compact, EXTREMELY quiet and very comfortable to game and type on. Most standard style keyboards tend to give me hand/finger fatigue over long periods of gaming... but this keyboard doesn't give me that at all. I started playing SC2 on a laptop so I think the key shapes are a perfect balance between that and a standard keyboard. The key presses themselves feel perfect to me... perfect distance and registration feel, unlike many others.
I even tried switching to a mechanical keyboard (Razer Blackwidow) just recently to see if it would end up being better. The only purpose it served was further emphasizing how perfect the logitech fit me. I returned it for a full refund after a week. Mechanical keyboards are cool and all that jazz, but they're just not for me.

All nice and dandy until I want that 7th battle group.
that looks horribad for sc2.

Use grid, anyways it's more muscle memory of position you could use that for sc if you wanted probably have a large learning curb though
Cherry MX browns are feeling great so far. I used a DasKeyboard II with Blues before. They are a bit softer and do not have that "click + clicky point" like the blues... but they definitly feel great.. i would say even better for playing StarCraft than the Blues... but i guess that's just personal likes or dislikes.
The Zowie also feels great, heavy and solid case, some very long "rubber-lips" on the back side... and i mean veeeeeeeeeeeery long... guess it will never ever slip away by any mistake.
One little thing i dislike so far is that the signs on the keys feel like some sort of rubber or something, not lasered... so we will see in the future if they go away or get dirty quite fast or anything... but for all the rest, the keyboard feels just great !
Hey, I just received my Leopold F300R Red Switch with N-Key. Here is some pics, Pic of the package
I pre-ordered from leopold.co.kr so it came with extra bonus things (Blank Key Cap Set)
Picture of the keyboard in the package, no modify.
Picture of the keyboard where I modified it with blank key cap and colored key caps.
The keyboard it self cost about 130dollar but with extra color caps = $140 When I try to press the keyoboard, it feels really light and I've seen many cherry mx keyswitch sound test and it sounds very similar to brown.
I hope cherry mx red switch gets more popular than blue or brown which most people prefer ^^
Edit: All pictures were taken with my itouch, quality sucks.
I heard they were really light w/no or lesser "bump", which doesn't appeal to me. I'm getting browns, would get blues if I didn't have to worry about the noise bothering other people.
I used Saitek Eclipse II before I got this keyboard and I got used to the Leopold keyboard in like what? 10mins? I never understood what bumps blue and brown has but it does feel light and I'm sure you don't want a heavy one? lol^^

Question, do the tenkeyless keyboards also reduce the size of the main keyboard at all? Don't mind missing the numpad, but don't want to type on a smaller actual keyboard.
About 4 months ago I finally replaced my old Saitek Eclipse that I had owned for about 3 years with a Logitch G110. Everything was pretty much fine and dandy until I started playing more Starcraft...and learned more about mechanical keyboards.
Basically for the past month or two I've been thinking of getting a mechanical keyboard. I tossed around the idea of something more expensive like a Das or one from elitekeyboards (filco etc), but for my needs I figured that a regular Blackwidow would do just fine, especially since it's been getting quite a bit of praise (compared to Razer's other keyboards which I would never think of buying).
So I took a trip down to Fry's today and picked one up. Definitely enjoying the experience of typing with it so far. Only thing I miss is not having backlighting, but I wasn't about to pay the ~$50 more to get the Ultimate version.
Only question I have for those of you who own this keyboard- do you use a wrist rest with it? The little lip on the front is nice, but I haven't figured out if getting some sort of wrist rest would work well with it.
Edit: Also, has anyone used any of those colored replacement WASD keys (like the ones from elitekeyboard or das's website) with this keyboard? If so, do they work well? (shape and height wise?)

They are standard cherry-style keycaps and should work fine.

Nope, the keys on a standard tenkeyless (such as a Filco or a Leopold) have the same size as a regular full-size keyboard would. But something like a Noppoo Choc Mini or a KBC Poker has the keys packed tighter together if I'm not mistaken. Not that it changes the layout drastically, the keys would still be the same size. Just closer together.

Reds are lighter than browns and have linear switches. Thus explaining why your friends have that reaction. Reds are considered to be the best gaming switches (in FPS) for those two reasons.

Congrats on your purchase! I hope that you're enjoying your new investment. Definitely an upgrade from any rubber dome keyboard!
As far as the replacement keys, any type of cherry replacement key (WASD clusters, custom ESC keys, etc.) will fit on any cherry switch keyboard regardless of switch type. Blue, brown, black, red, they will all fit as long as it's a cherry switch.

Does anyone know a similar keyboard feeling, texture, key caps like Qsenn DT-35? DT-35 has a higher key button than other membrane keyboards and texture on the keyboard it self. So it is different than most of membrane keyboards. What keyboard similar to DT-35 that is good for sc2 and sells in US? Yes, I'm looking for a membrane keyboard where its cheap.=]

first impressions: - definitly cheaper made than my Zowie Celeritas - but imo ok for 52€ - the white switches feel pretty much the same as the browns, but i "little bit" harder somehow - all in all, a "ok" keyboard for use @work

Logitech G19. Been an overall good keyboard, nothing too out of the ordinary. Mostly bought because of the sound control buttons. One bad thing about it is that the small LCD display it has requires it's own power source.

That is the sexiest thing I've ever seen... hahaha. As for myself, I use a Black Widow. I like it but goddam it's loud! I'd like to try out cherry blacks or browns, but don't have the $$$
Its like you are using a keyboard made of clouds, it feels so nice + you can change the color of the lights.
Havent tried many keyboards but I felt the improvement once i used it. I feel like it was well worth the money and you definetly see and feel the quality of it
EDIT: The gaming mode; that enables you too remove the input from the windows button is REALLY useful, all you have to do is to slide a switch located top left beside the MR key, a little nifty function which is very forgiving for my constant misclicks.
Just got a blackwidow ultimate today so far I love it, my first mech keyboard. One of the big selling points for me (outside of being a mechanical keyboard) was having the headphone and mic jack on the side of the keyboard, I'm often switching my headphones for speakers, taking them to friends, etc, saves me from going under my desk
It's ok, I've had it for a while now and the keys are starting to not respond occasionaly but other than that the backlight and size of it are nice and the keys make a nice sound.
Just bought the Razer Blackwidow Ultimate keyboard. I was originally planning to buy the Regular BW but unfortunately no store in Dubai had it in stock, so had to settle for the Ultimate. However, I got it at a bargain price from one of my regular stores at just marginally higher than the Regular Edition which is really cool.
After using it for a few hours, I have to say that I must really get used to typing on a mechanical keyboard. While you fully depress the membrane KB, obviously that is not the case with the BW and it is taking some getting used to at the moment. Did everyone take some time before they eventually got used to the beauty of mech keyboards?
Also, I am finding the layout of the BW really odd. And I don't think it is specifically due to the macro keys but they are one of the reasons. Every time I have to end up typing A, I end up pressing Caps Lock. This is due to the condensed layout of the keyboard which again should take some time getting used to. Any tips on how you got used to this would also be appreciated?
However, both of those personal issues aside, when I focus on typing on this keyboard like someone should on a mech. keyboard, it feels like sex on my fingertips. And this being the best bargain keyboard on the market, I can highly recommend this to any SC2 gamer looking for a mech keyboard but does not want to splurge on the more expensive offerings. I can already feel that my tapping is better than my old keyboard (which in all honesty was a cheap 15$ keyboard) and that is arguably the most important skill to have in SC2.
I will post up more impressions later once I fully get used to the keyboard. But for now, if you are looking for a mech. keyboard, then the Blackwidow should be first on your list if you are on a budget.

Thought to share pics of my modded Microsoft Sidewinder X6, modded with an analogue stick + 4 macro buttons taken from a wireless Logitech game pad, I no longer need to scroll across the map using the mouse anymore, and this stick is just perfect for heavy micro battles where u want to position the screen perfectly without wasting mouse moves on it ^^, took the idea from the Logitech G13 Gameboard.
i currently have a 6gv2 which i am selling to my little brother for my new filco!!!!!!!!!!! its cherry browns and limited edition blue from china!!! im so pumped!!!
razer blackwidow. never buying a membrane ever again, will try to avoid using one too. i can tell why peripheral companies are reluctant to manufacture mechs, theres no return business on these works of engineered art! ive only had my bw for 2 weeks and can already tell this keyboard will last me a VERY long time.
I have a Razer Lycosa, it is really good and its about 70 bucks, so not too expensive but its lastd me almost four years and is still in super good condition and its very comfortable.
My experience is that the cheaper a keyboard is, the better. Also, don't get one of those slim keyboards that aren't really laptop style keys. Those rattle and aren't smooth when pressing.
I use a Dell Keyboard because I spilled things on my other keyboard, and the T key sticks on my Dell Keyboard.... I win this =B Lol. Not trolling but seriously. There aren't many options for a mechanical at the 60 € range as far as I know. I'd say just go for any cheap non-mechanical (like the Dell one that QXC uses) and just save up if you really want a mechanical. The cheapest, popular mechanical I know of is the Black Widow, but the F-keys are not aligned like other keyboards.
After reading this thread I feel like an idiot, I only purchased my Logitech G15 around february time and based on what people are saying about mechanical keyboards - i'm regretting it already

At first, for me who spams a lot(250-300 apm) in the beginning it did and I couldn't spam anymore, but I started getting use to it. But still, time to time it wears me out.
Just got my DAS Keyboard Ultimate today with Cherry MX Blues and I have to say it is the best keyboard I have ever had in my life. The blue switches make a wonderful tactile sound and are a pleasure to type on, much unlike my Razer Lycosa. Please, for the life of me, do not get a Razer Keyboard, and if you do, get the Black Widow, as it appears to have solid plastic keys.
The Lycosa keys are made of a cheap clear plastic with a black plastic outer layer, which came right off when I tried to disinfect my keys for my annual keyboard cleaning with alcohol. Not saying that rubbing alcohol is the best choice, but it certainly has worked with all my solid key IBMs and old crappy Dells that I've used before, and based on the horrible response time, bad switches, and dull feel of the keys, I am more willing to say that it is just cheapness/bad quality on Razer's part.
Go for a DAS or Filco, you will not be disappointed. Well worth the money in every respect.
$15, best deal out there. It feels almost as good as a mechanical keyboard, and the comfortability is good as well. Durable, as I have been using it for 6 months since I bought it from Staples. no complaints for sure

Wrong imo. I've used that keyboard and it feels absolutely nothing like a mechanical keyboard.

I have that k120 on my other pc and it feels very cheap and absolutely nothing like this 6Gv2, it has one of the worst, cheapest feelings in it.
I had a razer something... still have it. Piece of shit just died after like 3 days, probably should have returned it. I then decided that i just wanted a really solid keyboard without any frills. Kinda like getting a reliable old ford instead of some flashy boy racer car. Saw this keyboard on the website, recognised the brand (gj idra plugging his sponsors so well in the past) and said THAT ONE.
This keyboard is really loud but i'm super happy with it. I've yet to swear at it which is a pretty good sign.

I don't think you've ever used a mechanical keyboard
My sister uses this keyboard, and the keys feel like mush.
I recently brought my first gaming laptop to use when I travel for work. it's an asusg73 my only problem is that there is such a huge space before the keyboard keys start. I have an old wireless logtech keyboard that seems better to use. Is this Normal thing to do? Also is it worth it to buy a gaming keyboard will it improve my play and Apm at all?

depends on the keyboard when i went up from my laptop keyboard to my filco i say a big improvement in apm, but it depends on the player.
I use the SteelSeries 6gv2 and the SteelSeries Ikari, I absolutely hate Razer ever since I've run into so many problems with their Lachesis and their BlackWidow along with their DiamondBacks :< Ever since I've only used SteelSeries.

Did you deliberately chose the trashiest razer "lol guise gaming produkts" hardware?
The Deathadder is pretty much known as a great durable comfortable mouse, and it took like 5 minutes on google to know to stay away from most razer stuff other than the deathadder.
As for the thread topic:
i use filco tenkeyless with cherry browns. beauty of a keyboard, especially for sc2 and typing
I use my Filco Majestouch Tenkeyless with Black switches, got it tuesday! Having used dome keyboards for 12 years, this feels so much better, it's ridiculous. I've recommended a mechanical keyboard to everyone I know, if nothing else then for the amazing feel and the increased speed.
This cost me £9. The box I have says "Standard desktop keyboard with plam rest", proving it is the cheapest of the cheap. I really want a nice keyboard, but I refuse to put down £100 for something that I've never tried before, I wish shops would have nice keyboards so I could test these different switch types :C
I got my Filco with MX Browns today and I didn't have any kind of "aha" moment when I started using it, but I definitely like it more and more. The keys are so damn easy to press, it just flows when you're typing. I'm trying to not bottom out though so I think I'm actually less accurate than I was with my old keyboard. Will take some getting used to. It's a completely different feel from a membrane keyboard.
I recently purchased a Razer Blackwidow. It is my first mechanical keyboard and I love it so far. After much deliberation I decided that Blue switches would suit me best, as I wasn't sure which would be best for me, and it seems as though I made the right decision
I use Razer Blackwidow, and i've been using it for about 1-2 months now and i have no complains at all. it's glossy and does attract dust and fingerprints but.... who cares? Just wipe it down once in a while and it remains beautiful. And i LOOOOOOOOOVE MX blues god damn...
I have the razor lycosa it works pretty well for me I like the way my keys are nice and flat I feel more comfortable playing like that. I have had the problem where keys wouldn't work for but I would just install the drivers again and it worked fine again. I have been thinking of getting a new one but I don't really want to send the money lol.
Great keyboard, with perfect design for most hands (4.5 stars 90 reviews) and no flaws. The only thing I would say is that its legs are a bit flimsy, it lasts about seven to nine months for me. At $11, these things are disposable for about 2 a year. It makes a nice, nonirritating clacky sound that makes it feel like a mechanical keyboard. The curve of the keys make it a great keyboard as well.
I bought it a year ago just because i was wondering how a mechanical keyboard feels like. When i read the description on the Steelseries home page "build like a tank" i was like lol,yea ok. Than when i actually first unboxed it i noticed how heavy and robust it was so they weren't kidding. Feels like if i want i can go play SC2 and than go vandalise the neighborhood with it after to blow off some steam if i played bad:o
Just ordered this coming tom. But had a Blackwidow before and i got some problem with the space bar pushing the alt key down with it it drove me nuts so i took the bar off to see the problem but i guess that voids the warranty so i am very dissapointed with razer but before that problem i thought that the keyboard was great and very fun to type on. hoping that the SS will be the same and i guess that the space bar problem was pretty common so i am sure that razer has changed some stuff.....i did get an RMA but have not recieved the board back. The only reason i got it was because i talked to the supervisor on the phone and basically told him that i spent 100+ on this thing only to have it shipped to me broken and when i try to DIY he voids my warranty all in all it is a good board Very curious to see how the 6g will compare
Blues are better for typing, blacks are better for FPS, opinions vary on what is better for RTS. However, more than anything it's a matter of personal preference.

but its soooo worth it :3
feels so much better typing and gaming on a mechanical tbh

LOL that's the keyboard I was using before jumping to a mech board! It was pretty good for so cheap, but I will never go back! :p
I've used a razer keyboard for years and it worked fine and I beat the crap out of it. About a week ago I was hanging out with a friend and playing some sc so I brought my gear along (6gv2, mamba, destructor) and let him try it out. He uses a Razer Blackwidow and after a few hours of playing on my 6gv2 he instantly wanted to switch to it. With Sc2 I would honestly prefer blacks over blues with blues you cannot get the double tap you can with blacks. The blacks do take a little bit of time and effort (noticing how much force to use to actuate) to get used to using.
Difficult to find a mechanical keyboard with Scandinavian layout/print. Possibly only SteelSeries 7G and Qpad 'something'. Methinks the Qpad is a rebrand of another company's keyboard... don't remember the name.
i have no idea what keyboard im using right now. its an old generic white/yellow-ish keyboard that came with an old computer and i decided to use it cause the keys were super clicky and i loved the feel of it.
I really don't like the layout of the F2-F4 keys on the Blackwidow because I use them for macro. I currently have a 6gv2, but I'm not a fan of them because the black keys take a toll on your hands when you click a lot. I really want the leopolds from elitekeyboards.
Currently using the Razer Blackwidow standard. Didn't feel the need for the Ultimate. It's my first mechanical keyboard and I'm very happy with the decision I made after much research about switches. I've never tried anything except Blue and Black switches and I favour Blue. However, I am intrigued by Browns.
I own it in Blue and in Brown because I hate the MX Blacks. (I nearly said I hate the blacks and then I realized it sounded racist :S so I clarified that I hated the switches not the race :DDD)
i use a generic keyboard that came with a very old computer i had from like 10 years ago, its one of those white/yellowish ones. the keys are very clicky and i like it very much.
Works pretty good, I like the keys on it and I know for a fact that it can withstand almost anything!
Tried a Razer Blackwidow the other day though and I'm seriously thinking about buying one or atleast one with similiar mechanical keys, they feel soooooo nice..
I use the white one and my friend uses the black one.
I'm planning on doing this soon =D and on topic I'm currently using a Saitek Eclipse iii, has served me so well for 4+ years even the beatings it's taken from frustation and had so much crap poured over it. Have been tempted to get a Mech keyboard for ages and if I decide to I'm thinking of getting this otherwise it's the Qsenn =)
I use Filco Majestouch with blue switches. And i love the sound btw...
Its a really cool keyboard, but does anyone know where to buy other keys for it?
WASDkeyboards sells keycap sets and if you go to custom keyboard and design your own set of keys you can purchase just the keycaps and they fit Filco and Das models :D
On August 13 2011 04:09 ANDROID69 wrote: Love my Das Ultimate <3
Did you have to replace all the stock keycaps on the Das when you customized yours? I just wondered because I was looking at getting one and I read something about the das keyboard keycaps all not having the same shape. I don't know if the keycaps Das uses are standard, however. If not, seems like this would cause a problem when customizing with other keycaps.
Also, where did you buy the various custom keycaps? I really like the yellow arrow keys.
had a blackwidow but i hated the macro buttons and the whole thing was to big. blue switches made it hard to play fps becouse i had to fully release the key before pressing it again ( i like to "float" on the activation point ).
really like this new keyboard but the sad thing is that i would really try red switches now its to expensive.
Zowie Celeritas - very nice keyboard, but have noticed some discolouration of keys which are used a lot. Bit annoying but at the end of the day it doesn't affect how it works. Awesome to type and game on.
I have the UK layout, not this one with the stupidly big enter key.
My uncle is giving me this later this week with an adapted port from the weird DIN connector it has. White alps, 15F keys, sounds good. Northgate Omnikey 101
Simple and clean black Filco Brown Switch NKRO full size checkered keyboard with white caps. ;D The shift key I got was too small to replace the right shift key... Oh well its not a big deal xD Also the white keys do have letters etched onto it. Its hard to see since its so bright and the the color of the letters are grey.
Steelseries 6gv2 for me. I love it! Some people dislike the resistance of the Cherry MX Black switches, but I'm the opposite, I like that the keystroke is always firm and I have to really push the key. I also really like how springy and responsive they are.
I spilled Gatorade on it a little bit last weekend in a drunken stupor though and now the space bar is sticking a little bit :-( Gotta pull the key off and clean it now I guess lol
I got a Logitech K120, fits my suite for SC2. This thing > razer lycosa, so hard. Cant believe I paid 60 euros for a "gaming" keyboard that's faulty as hell.
A good ol' DT-35. Got it quite a while ago, back during my SC days, and it has served me well up to this day. And not only for SC, but for all manner of games. It's cheap, simple, and reliable. What more could you want?
i agree on the low profile keys, cant use them at all, im way too inaccurate. i currently use a Tt Meka G1, and i absolutely love it, things built like a tank, has a great key layout, keys feel amazing to use, so much better than my old logitech thing.
Can anyone recommend a keyboard with the f1-f12 keys not too far away from the number keys? (i have small handa and I think it will help me with my macro)

Something like a KBC Poker X/Noppo Choc Mini will work...they are compact keyboards with no numpad and the F keys are just above the number keys. Both come with Cherry mech switches.
I have a g6v2...yet to addapt to the height of the keys...sometimes i don't press too hard the "V" button and i get frustrated cuz i miss my inject larva
I'm using the tt esports meka keyboard and its pretty awesome it was my first mechanical keyboard and i really like it. Its a bit shorter than the normal keyboards and more compressed, it was a bit wierd in the beginning but when after a few hours i got used to it and it works great
On September 18 2012 11:44 3trpur2 wrote: what keyboard is that?
It's a Datacomp DCK-100. I remember Skydigital had ads with FD back then, and they sell it as 'nKeyboard Mechanical' in Korea; in the western world Steelseries rebrands it as '6Gv2'.
I went through a couple of the HP bundled keyboards, and a couple cheap dynex keyboards before I finally allowed myself to spend the money on a Razer Blackwidow. Bought the regular one thinking that back lighting wasn't worth the extra $30 at the time, and would be something that could go wrong. I now wish I spent the extra $30 for playing at night. I really like the feel of the switched as opposed to membrane keyboards, I feel like if I stopped gaming I would still want a mechanical.
Leopold tenkeyless with browns and a red esc key. Looks identical to the Filco tenkeyless with red esc key posted earlier ITT. It's my first mech. keyboard and I absolutely love it and will never go back to rubber domes again.
I hammer away at my 6Gv2. Also own a Marauder (keys take a lot of force) and a Black Widow (its super uncomfortable given the F key position and how little force is required to activate keys).
CoolerMaster QuickFire Storm with Cherry MX Blues.
Honestly, besides the ugly branding, I have little complaints and absolutely love it. The FN media keys are nice. The lettering of the laser etched keycaps kinda feel stuck out and textured but it's easy to get used too. Great keyboard for the price. Got it for 65$
Ducky tenkeyless 2012 Year of the Dragon Cherry Blues with Blue LED backlighting. Wife plays with the same thing, hers has cherry reds with purple lighting.

Ha you just had to go for the louder switches than the lady didnt you?
Probably posted few times in this thread before, anyway still on my dt35 after giving up on mechanical keyboards. Works great for me, so cheaply made if flexes back into shape perfectly after every whack (they should advertise it as an added feature), more expensive mechanical keyboards I had to bend back into shape ><

How are you finding the space and backspace key? I was going to buy this keyboard and then I heard complaints about the inconsistent switch types across the board.
To add to the thread; im using a Leopold 700CR TKL at the moment with browns and o-rings.

What "expensive keyboards" were you using? Weird how you "bent" a steel plate..Are you using a hammer to type?
i use a razer blackwidow and i'm very happy with it. i've had it for almost 3 years, smashed it, bashed it, dropped it 1 million times and i clean it about as often as i get a haircut, which is... well, not that often to say the least :D. Still works perfectly, i love the blue switches sound, kinda looks like shit right now but who cares. I was a bit worried at first since the materials do look kinda cheap and i read quite a few negative reviews but i'm really glad i got it in the end. Would have gone for the 6G V2, but no blue switches awesome clicky sound, no gg.
