IMO she should have been chosen for the new CC of SS. I think she's more rounded up than Shunichi in all shinigami skills. Demon Arts, healing, power, maybe not speed, intelligence she's overall better.

He called her "Retsu" while criticizing her medical skills. It could've been sarcastically reminding her that she's really not a healer.

I didn't see the raw, but mangastream's translation has "Retsu" in quotes, which seem to suggest that she changed her given name. It's extremely likely that her given name used to be Yachiru.

I mean, I definitely like the way things have been going in this arc (with the quincies and the shakeup in SS), but overall I found this one to be kind of slow. Sure it has a bit of a twist at the end there . . . aside from that not much else happened. The first half of the chapter was Ichigo getting out of a hot spring . . . not much else. If you think about it, there are at least 5 Captains whose bankais are not revealed yet (Shunsui, Urahana, Rose, Shinji, and Ukitake), two (?) currently living retired captains (Yoruichi, Love), as well as at least two people I can think of who could probably get bankais (Kenpachi and Rukia). Going by the previous pace of the manga (ie. before Kudo was forced to end in one last arc), he could have just revealed one extra bankai per arc and slowroll the series for another 10 years.

He could have slowrolled the series for another decade. I am not sure if vice-captains usually have bankai though, but even if you exclude them there are plenty of material left lol.

I think the plot points in Bleach is coming around nicely, but Kubo is just really bad at putting them together. If the art of story is like playing a piece of music, this guy just plays as loud as he can all the time (power ups) or as soft as he can all the time (dialogues) and hopes for the best. The notes are there, but the interpretation just needs a bit of work. He's just really bad at putting together tension. Why else would people think it should have ended after the Aizen arc, when he had another full arc towards it? He didn't reveal enough information in the past about certain key factors that makes you think there are bigger factors in play and so everything just "comes out of nowhere" and makes you go "huh?". Hopefully whatever Kubo works on next will be much better because I'm kind of enjoying how things are being knitted together and making me more convinced it isn't just "making shit up as you go" a la Naruto, but a lot of it was planned from the start, but man, that just means he's a terrible story teller. yeah Kubo is good at inventing, but not good at combining/connecting

Agreed, sort of. I think he came up with a bunch of cool character drawings and an interesting plot overall (with some exceptions). That's a big part of storytelling and he's pretty good at it. However, you're absolutely right that his execution of the story is painfully bad at times. No foreshadowing. No hints that there's something more. Nothing. We just have these characters that have no development until suddenly Kubo needs to use them and then there's this storyline behind them. It makes me question at what point in the story did Kubo decide that Unohana was the first Kenpachi and her name was Yachiru. Was it just tacked on out of convenience or was it something planned from the beginning? It's actually hard to tell. When you leave the slate completely clean on each character and don't develop them at all, it gives you the magical ability to suddenly put any back story you want into that character.

Thanks. kenpachi apparently named that little girl thats always with him after someone he admired most. which is is Yachiru come on man. hes asking permission to train zaraki. they are doing the classic villain wait for the good guys to power up before fighting them again.
