Command and Conquer, Red Alert, Dune, etc. Yeah, playing RTS with a game controller isn't really revolutionary.
But this guy is playing Starcraft II. A PC/Mac-exclusive title. Using an incompatible controller. Hitting Masters. Playing macro games. While streaming. THAT'S NEVER HEARD OF BEFORE!

Hes obviously using a program such as Xpadder to bind keyboard + mouse actions to the gamepad.
Using the Ctrl + (hotkey) would double the hotkeys available. You can also hotkey D pad's arrows aswell so don't forget that aswell guys. He should be able to use around 32 hotkeys via hes gamepad.
Ive done this alot of times with MMORPG's without pad support. Its hard to use your analog stick as a mouse so mad props to OP for mastering it.

His stream also runs so smoothly, I wonder what stream program and settings is he using.

I noticed this too. It's one of the smoothest user-based stream I've seen; his SC2 settings look very peculiar as well.
Everything is too... different. It's like he's on another plane of existence within our dimension. Hope that made sense.

post the list of what each button does on ur controller pleeeease xD!

Whoa, this is actually really really awesome.
Blizz thinking about console-izing this?! :S

Maybe has something to do with his console's experience when you need like way more FPS while playing a fighter game than sc2 and the likes. He probably has a lot of Upload, that's for sure. But he's not the only one to have a really smooth's one

This is cool.. And weird.. I'm really curious as to how you're able to make this work. Like controller layout, how do you make that work? What buttons do what? How did you make/optimize this setup? I know some friends who would probably be really interested in this.

how.... i can´t evan play a shooter properly with a gamepad controller! How is it possible?!
I am deeply impressed but still think mouse + keyboard is inferior!
but still awesome!

I dunno how I would post my xpadder setup? its definently not the most effective way to set up a xbox360 controller to play star craft 2, but its what I've gotten used too, I could think of a few other setups that are less stressful on your hands, anyway, Maybe when I stream tomarrow I could pick someone from the chat who has guy and send the guy my xpadder file over that? and he could try it out?
Again, thanks everyone who promoted me today, Definently motivated to stream for you guys in the future.
TL community you guys Rock, Thanks again <3

I'm running a i7 3930k with 60 fps at 720p, I don't take any performance drop from the 60 fps, so I figure why not, and everyone said that, its one of the smoothest streams they've seen, so if your computer can handle it, its worth it to run the 60 fps instead of the 30 fps, I'm also running 2 mb upload

Try doing Marine splits vs banes on stream :D

That is literally only a matter of getting used to it, I played console fps for about 8 years and a lot of pc fps as well and I don't really notice a difference in aim when switching between the two, the hole fps only works with m/k is just a myth created by fps pc players who tried to use controller a few times and failed, it literally takes years to get good with a controller. Also the hole "but console fps have aim assist" thing is bs as well, there h ave been console fps like halo 1 or shadowrun with no aim assist and people were able to achieve perfect aim in those as well, only modern titles like cod or battlefield use lots of aim assist.
While I have played some rts on consoles before, and especially halo wars did an amazing job with the controller layout, what you do with your stream is amazing. I watched it for a bit and if it wasn't for the cam in the corner showing you using the controller, I wouldn't have noticed much of a difference from a regular mouse/keyboard player. I played some rpgs on the pc that don't support controller using one and using the analog stick as a mouse is hard as fuck, so mad propes to you for hitting such a high level in a game like star 2 using it, definitely one of my favorite streams to watch now!
Also if you want to you can just sent me your xpadder file and I can write down in this thread how you mapped it out.

Come on... Don't overestimate too much the pad. Try Playing painkiller / q3 / quakelive with a pad. I bet my life you wouldn't even kill rafa in a thousand years. :/

Yes, I think it very much depends on the game - I would say that playing a fast, movement based shooter like UT or Quake would be much more difficult with the Gamepad - not saying it's impossible, but it's definitely more difficult.
I never would've thought you could play an RTS like SC2 with a controller :D That looks pretty amazing. Why did you start playing with a controller? Just to see if you can do it or because you just like controllers so much?
|
I started just using the controller for browsing my pc like to listen to music and such, and maybe a bit of playing a console game here and there. I started playing world of warcraft with the xbox360 controller, which was simple enough. Then I bought the Sc2 collectors edition just so I could get the thor pet.
I started to play custom games in Wings and such. I started watching day9's broadcasts and getting to know basic build orders I played terran back then. I had really bad ladder anxiety at least 1v1 for awhile tho, Took me awhile to shake it, I beat a diamond player in a 1v1 once, This was before master league, I thought "hey maybe I can do this" I kept working at it, For 3 years, seems like every year I broke through a plateau and got better.
A lot of people helped me grow as a player along the way and get me to the point I am now.
Right now I'm sitting at a high diamond low masters level. Maybe if I keep working at it I can get even higher who knows, I've come this far. The feed back of the TL is extremely encouraging. So I'm gonna keep at it, and stream for you guys.
That's basically the short version of how I came to play on the game pad. I like where I'm at right now, I'm not the fastest but I have precise mouse movement and good macro

kk I would love to no how it works how you set your hotkeys what they are and what not lol this looks so hard to doo
