As for Ishibashi, I wasn't aware that ordering from Japan could be so cheap. I'm assuming I'd get destroyed on shipping and duties/tax? Yup, you assumed right. Shipping is over $100 to Canada and the US plus duty (though some people report not having to pay duty). For some things that extra cost is too much but for others it is well worth it. Like the Jaco-style Jazz Bass I am looking at, you cannot get in North America for under $1000 anywhere, they go for around $1000 or more on eBay. It would be about $800 after taxes and duty, which is still a pretty good price for it. Usually I would be leery of ordering stuff from overseas but from everything I have read, Ishibashi doesn't joke around when it comes to shipping. I've never read a complaint about their international services. They ship crazy fast and pack things quite well. But yeah, the fees can be comparatively high for cheaper stuff.

I guess I gotta bust out the calculator for things like this then haha. Duties/tax is really the only thing that would ever hold me back from ordering custom guitars from Europe or USA.

I remember they used to be regarded pretty highly in the 80s by 'shredders' and the likes, but I haven't seen all that much from the company in a while in terms of visibility. Can you recall the model of JP sig reno? Eugh, it's so painful not getting to actually try out the gear I'm potentially interested in It pains me to say it but I'm actually going to sell my charvel and pickup a carvin 6 string, when I get back from my vacation. The frets on it are just too large. I thought I could get used to it, but after trying to do some shred licks on it and then going to my carvin 7 string, the difference in speed was incredible. The costs for Carvins in Europe are supposed to be a lot higher than here because you have to buy through a dealer so I could see why they wouldn't be as big over there. But there's a pretty big following here because they're a lot of guitar for the price. Their used market is unbeatable... albeit the prices seem to be going up now that I'm in the market for one...
I don't remember the model of the jp, but it was a 6 string. I remember thinking it had an ebony fretboard because it was really dense and had no grainy feel to it, but apparently they don't make guitars with ebony fretboards so it must have been a really dark rosewood. If you want more of an idea what its like you should post over at sevenstring.org because those people fucking love JPs. I'm sure they'll sell you on one of them. I've read the sterlings are supposed to be a lot of bang for your buck if you're afraid to dish out that much coin for a guitar you haven't played.

To be fair, it is but a pipedream with my current cashflow lol, but I do need something to aim for.
My brother's just got an RG 8 string for his own tracking, so I get his Agile 7 back. It's actually pretty solid, pickups are a bit ropey but it's pretty well made otherwise. Might just swap them out for something better for my stuff that really needs the low B and get a baller 6 string, either something like a PRS Custom 24 or something with specific features like a Steinberger and their trem system.
I'm more of a fan of 6s in general for their scale length, us wombats have pretty small handspawns.

I played 7s for a bit (my guitar teacher and I both got one at the same time and nerded out to Nevermore stuff) but I ended up stopping playing them. It wasn't so much the scale length as that I just never used the 7th string ever and it ended up getting in the way more than anything. I still have my 7 but it is being sold to fund my purchase of a new Jazz Bass. It sounds good (It's some dude's signature guitar. I got it for $300 because it was kinda beat up. It's got DiMarzios in it and is made of Mahogany) but I never liked the neck too much. Ibanez necks have never been something I have liked. They're thin like Jackson necks but too flat. So it shall be sacrificed at the alter of my obsession with jazz fusion.
I feel the same about 5-6 string basses. Some people have cool uses for them but for me I used the 5th string in like 2 songs ever, and one was just to make this transition I came up with for an improvised walking bass line go smoother. 99% of my usage for the 5th string was as a thumb rest. I usually play with a floating thumb (meaning I don't anchor it in one spot. If I am playing on anything other than the E string I have it resting on the E, and if I am playing stuff that incorporates the E string I just plant it on the pickup or edge of the pickguard). I ended up selling that bass, which was oddly enough a Jazz Bass, even though I loved the sound of it. That is why I want to get a 4 string Jazz. I loved everything about my 5 string Jazz except for the 5th string, so remove that factor and I'll be set. That bass was crazy heavy too. The 4 string ones are much lighter for the most part from what I have noticed.
Edit: Also, for the JP signature thing, my guitar teacher's JP7 also had a really dark rosewood fretboard. Music Man must like that quality in the rosewood they choose.

Anyone here played Rocksmith? And whats your take on it? Good for practicing or just for funsies?

Jaco-style Jazz Bass is technically ordered. SO PUMPED. Just waiting on a confirmation email. I sent them an inquiry 2 hours ago and the international sales associate got back to me with a full description of the instrument including the condition of the neck, truss rod, finish, and more along with the serial number, weight, and year it was made. Just insane. Shipping was a bit steep, but given that the probability of finding something like this here approaches 0% and the probability of finding something like this for under $1000 is 0%, I will eat that fee. It come with a case and everything.
Also, here's a couple pictures of it off their site. Since it is the used site that is the actual bass I am getting.
Now I will go watch live Weather Report concert videos and squeal with glee.
So excited to have a Jazz Bass again. My book of Jaco Pastorius song transcriptions for various Weather Report songs and stuff off his solo albums gets here next week too. After finals are done I will be locking myself in my room and going on a jazz fusion vision quest.
Edit: Reserved for me pending my payment going through. SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Double Edit: Payment cleared. It is heading to the international sales department to be inspected, packed, and then shipped. The level of service is insane. That email was sent while I was asleep. So within 4 hours I sent an inquiry, got a response that included a full description of the bass, put in my order request (they don't use a cart system for international orders. You coordinate with someone who personally deals with the order and informs you of everything), and have the instrument being sent to me. Really cool.

My good friend has the same model bass. It's great.
I'd recommend putting nylon wrapped strings on it.

I'd recommend putting nylon wrapped strings on it. That was my intention. Either those or the flatwounds I used to use on my other bass. Thanks for the recommendation though.

Ben, Youtube unwrapping and first playthrough. I wish to see the sheer joy on your wee features

Picked up Rocksmith 2014 and started playing again. So much fun! But god I've forgotten how chewed up your fingers get if you haven't been playing lol. Need to drill some chords like mental.

My friend brought his 8 string over when we were recording my part for the terran theme. Holy crap was it heavy....
I'm definitely going to have to buy an 8 string now.

It was a surf green carvin dc-800. It's so sweet. He just got hired at carvin too, so the GAS is running rampant.

Also, that thing is so slick. I didn't even know Carvin made 8s.

I think he's doing sales at the hollywood location but I'm not certain. Pretty badass though.
They started selling 8's, I think, 3 years ago. It's quickly become one of the most popular models. I won't link to another forum on here, but there are other forums that have threads devoted to dc 800s, and holy crap. Some of the options these guys get are ridiculous. Truly gorgeous guitars.

How hard is it to swap out the pickups of a guitar? I've never done anything but change strings on a guitar but I have a soldering iron around somewhere. Have a go or take it into the shop? This is my guitar

Depends on the pickups I think (and your solder skills probably lol). I've never tried it personally, but was told that there were some extremely fragile parts on the Seymour Duncans I had installed in my strat which made it a fairly stressful operation. My old Les Paul copy's vintage humbuckers sounded like it was much easier to do.
