Sure, Metallica peaked as a band long ago but can't we appreciate the excellent career they have made over the years? Their 80s and early 90s material are still massively popular and they seem to be pretty damn popular at least in Northern Europe. If I was already going to Blizzcon, I would be fucking pumped to see Metallica of all bands to boot.
It's just another chance for people to show of their identities. "Look at me, I don't like Metallica, I prefer Iron Maiden". or "Metallica hasn't made anything good since blablabla and I copied this opinion from someone else who I think is cool, so it must be true"
Most people eventually outgrow this sort of behaviour where they have to use other peoples work to reflect their own unique identity, as if they have one.
Have you thought of the fact that maybe some people just don't like Metallica?
No, no, that can't be true. I'm absolutely sure that anyone saying metallica is shit is copying it from someone else who they think is cool, whoever that may be..
Man, am I glad people like me have outgrown such behaviour.
I thought nobody actually gets into bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pink Floyd, AC/DC ect. after the age of 14. As in you can still like it but you outgrow the 'look at me, I like this cool real music' faze. It's used as a gateway into liking music, you just move on to contemporary stuff.
Blizzard has always had that teenage heavy-metal thing going on in its games so it fits I guess. One character has to be metal themed or there is a 'rock' concert cameo. Wonder how much it costs to book them.
I listened to the Black Album when I was 14 because it came out a year earlier. It was dope as fuck and still is. Plenty of people get into Metallica when they are young. And I still listen to those bands to this day.
Anyone who goes to Metal shows of any type, heavy, light or otherwise knows that the age range for that music is broad. Super broad.
There is more nonsense in this thread than any I can recall since the gamergate one. Ffs folks
Why is it that people older and no doubt wiser than me across the world still haven't come to the realisation that there is not one act you could book that would please everyone, NOT ONE!!
People cannot agree on music or pizza toppings, that is a given fact. Metallica will put on a good stage show and it will be fun. And if you need Warcraft and Starcraft are not metal, go play Brutal Legend and learn that all heavy mental bands are kinda all huge nerds writing power ballets.

This is never big. Guys got paid, they will play a set, mere business. It's not like they're doing it because they are fans or something, that would be news-worthy.

Few Metal bands come close to being even 10% as good as Led Zeppelin. Metallica is one of those bands.
This isn't the 1980s. Metallica hasn't made decent music since the Black Album and their first 4 thrash albums.
It doesn't really matter, live they're hardly going to discard their good material and play only their recent stuff.
While not particularly into them anymore it's still something that can draw eyeballs and worse case just you know, don't watch Metallica?
Actually, thanks for bringing that point up. I hear they're also pretty meh playing live nowadays
Seen them twice in the last few years and I disagree completely.
And before you claim it's the newer albums, Kill 'Em All is my favourite and always has been. Live, they fucking rock. And it's not just them, the energy of the crowd is amazing.

Actually most rock/metal fans really dislike contemporary stuff; or better let's say: "pop music". But you are right: They start to like music! And most music that is in some billboard charts is not music for them And yes, probably you get into mentioned bands when you are 14 ... but you still listen to them decades later too! You don't "outgrow" it. I am proof!

Exactly. Unfortunately, this means that the act that gets picked is simply the lowest common denominator.
Shame not all the old members but also a shame people who say they want a better bands. really hope people stop thinking bieber can sing he is fucking terrible and all the bands that have similar music has him do as well. good to see blizzard going for a classic band thats awsome to play blizzard games too.
Metallica isnt a cheap band to book for an event, so I really hope that the price of the Blizzcon tickets wasnt inflated just to cover the costs of booking Metallica. Bcuz yeah, theyre not really relevant anymore, they have no connection to the game & im sure we'd probably all want our money going towards something better. Imo this seems like it was done just for hype reasons, but in reality it fails cuz Metallica isnt relevant anymore. Just my opinion
Damn that thread went downhill really fast... De gustibus non est disputandum. Higher ups at Blizzard might be Metallica fans. I still would have loved for Blizzard to get a more fitting band, but Blink 182, Tenacious D and Foo Fighters didn't fit either IMO. Metallica and their lawsuit against Napster...

and who would you prefer??
Well, I'd wager that Metallica would be more expensive, because they're a much more known and established band. As for preference, it's hard to say. One one hand, you've got the complete ear rape that is k-pop, on the other hand, you've got a bunch of old, fat dudes who haven't been good for over 20 years. Still, just out of pure nostalgia, I'd rather it was Metallica.
as a 34 yr old and someone who grew up with this band, they havent been good since their spiral crash of the load and thereafter albums, although there were 'nice tunes' on these albums metallica have done too many live performances where they state they are only playing the earlier songs. their performance will be dialed in like the 10 times i went to see them. its great music yes, but the whole napster/business/greed antics which which dominated this era is going to ruin the event for me. Metallica USED to be good. why not get megadeth? Least they kept it real and are still releasing studio alumns with as much pace a ferocity as their first (ye ok they have had 2 hiccups but hell man, theyve wrote a lot of shit and been around a long time!)Oh ye, metallica are more commercial and play for the people who like all the pretty songs . . .see what i did there?
