I edited liquipedia observer and overlord pages to show that detection raises as well with the upgrades, sice they definetly are seperate variables
I remember when lurker contains were almost standard thing to do, I first used to upgrade the speed instead, but later on noticed that the sensor array upgrade made it way harder for zerg to snipe my observers. With sensor upgrade obs could be so much further back that scourges could not reach them.
These days corsairs are standard tho so speed is prropably better to get first.

Nice work.
So here's the obvious question... why is detection range longer than sight range?
As per other folks' testing, this is something that seems to be true both with and without Sight upgrades.
(btw, did anyone update the Detection page?)

Makes zero logical sense too... how can a detector detect something it can't even see itself? The 'spotter' unit doesn't have detection.

Guess I'm just going to go with, "Because they were afraid it'd be too easy to snipe mobile detectors otherwise."
But if so, even that seems like a mixed bag. If you think about it, the safest place for your detectors to be is right above your army, not behind it.
I've lost track of how many detectors I've seen sniped by scourge that looped around behind someone's army, i.e. 'the quarterback sack'.
I mean, yeah, if you've got a big ol' deathball of an army, then more detector range = safer detector, but if you've got more like a skirmish line going, not so much... more range might even encourage bad/unsafe detector placement.
