Any way I can catch up with the metagame changes since 2009? Welcome back to the BW family Most foreigners play on ICCUP. The Koreans play on fish server but for beginners I guess ICCUp is a lot better, more sociable, lower levels etc.. http://iccup.com/en/dota/files.html as for metagame I dont think it has changed that much? I think FS was already around in 2009 I think, that is the map where we all play, and most maps have similar characteristics (e.g. relatively easy 3rd) I will try to think of how I played the game 6 years ago (PS: Im protoss user) TVT/PVP/ZVZ - basically very similar, I guess there is an increased in tendency to start mass wraiths once you have 3 bases up in TVT. But rest of the MU are similar really. The Hive tech ZVZ has become slightly more common, that said it is still very very rare. PVT: Terrans now like to take a fast 3rd expansion very quickly (off 1-3 facts). 2 bases 6 factory pushes aren't as common now. As a results protoss users also tend to expand earlier/more aggressively. PVZ: The standard build from Zerg would be to go 3 hatch lair (normally the 3rd hatch will be at another natural) then add spire then add 2 more hatcheries, with earlier scourges to counter the "Bisu" build. Sim city is also more advanced at this stage in that speedlots attacks aren't as effective vs zerg. TVZ: Basically zergs are still doing what savior would do... he really changed the MU. One thing that I can think of is terrans tend to do a mech switch after say 3 bases to counter the zerg lategame units.

That's a broad category, I can only assume you mean professional/considerable $ leagues. The reason to have maps that size is to accomodate more than 4 players. As far as I know, 5+ player maps have never been used. Probably because rush/push distances become too variable/prone to imbalance on 5+ spawn/larger maps. Not to mention you're going to have an unnecessary amount of bases for a 1v1 game if you want a normal density of bases on these larger maps. I'm thinking there's some good reason why map makers landed on 128x128 for standard map size.

IIRC in early seasons of the Blizzard Ladder they were, if that counts as 'competitive' Starcraft. Nowadays 1v1 is almost always on 128x128 or 96x128 maps, as you know. Design-wise, you can see why, though I guess 1v1'ing on a 256x256 map once in a blue moon would be an interesting change-of-pace.

Perhaps a combination of the following? Well upgraded goliaths and an absolute ton of turrets, although they're basically just for delaying the carriers until your goliaths arrive wherever they're attacking.
