But can you give me a genuine synopsis? Right off the top of your head: what's tog about? And I don't mean "what happens?" i mean: "what's it actuality all about?"

thats the whole point, the plot has a lot of complexities that cannot be explained in 1 sentence

DBZ had one thing going; "evil dude #1234123 show up, is stronger and wants to destroy everything. Goku finds a new upgrade within himself and they fight". ToG starts out pretty easy: 'main character chases silly girl', but changes into something much bigger than him/them.

Yes that is partially true, a big part of the story line is that Baam has the potential power to be as strong or even stronger than the original team that climbed the tower and achieved immortality. The big difference that has been emphasized is that they gave in to the "demon" that dwells in their souls that craves power. Baam has done something that has not been done before, by trying to forge his own path. He has not yet determined what that path may be but it will be his path. And many of the fights and decisions that has been happening since the hell train has been in reflection of this. I think ToG is by far one of the best if not the best "shonnen" that has been made so far. There are many other themes that are being explored but I digress, I am to lazy to explain them.

As far as I can tell, their entire content is translated by fans, right? http://translate.webtoons.com/ A crowdfunded project approach to translation/localisation is interesting, but has its obvious effects quality wise, I guess. Especially regarding higher level language phenomena, like cultural specifica, the Korean play on words and references SIU without busts out once in a while without rendering them explicit, all of the aesthetic language dimensions and other untranslatables. And — to contribute to the on-going discussion: On November 12 2016 22:55 Dangermousecatdog wrote: Plenty of the recent fights have a DBZ style that wasn't as present in the earlier fights. To be fair though the fights were never really part of ToG's strength, but rather the characters and interesting storytelling, which rather got distorted by the sheer amount of characters the author has been adding. This very constallation that is going on currently seems like a good plot device to lower the amount of tokens in play, depending on how many characters are able to reach the Hell Train with Karaka blocking the bridge. Assuming that SIU is aiming for that direction.

Especially regarding higher level language phenomena, like cultural specifica, the Korean play on words and references SIU without busts out once in a while without rendering them explicit, all of the aesthetic language dimensions and other untranslatables. All I remember is that the company stopped translating/publishing ToG because the original webtoon site asked them to stop, as they'd started releasing their own (iirc via a mobile phone application), kinda the same way some scantrad teams stop a series once its rights are acquired or it started being published, in their own country. They made an announcement about it in the last chapter they released. There are two "issues" with the translation: - the quality of course - the attention to details and info: they'd use cliff notes for what you call phenomena, the origins of names (often soccer players iirc), and at the end of each chapter they'd translate SIU's afterword, and often add other notes. Sometimes information from SIU's other blog post (info on rankers, families' background/situation, etc.), and sometimes more detailed translation info, such as how they go around translating techniques' names, or a specific reference/meaning behind a character's. Some people still put the info from the blog posts on the wiki, but it's harder to parse (and especially find what's new) than getting these posts. It actually meant that, while ToG was usually available on mondays, the company's translation was only up on sundays, but the quality and additions were well worth it.
