It's a stupid narrative that's been pushed for no real reason for over a year now.

Almost every narrative pushed in eSports is fake and stupid to be fair.

Squirtle was a free win for whoever played against him tbh

So has the opposite narrative: The previous era was obviously the best so no player could ever top them. logically it makes the most sense that the skill-level is the highest when the scene is the most competitive. So in 2013-15 as the amount of koreans playing back then was far higher and proleague was a thing.
that doesn't mean that the top players back then can never be topped though.

Yeah but players get better the longer they play. People say WoL was the most competitive, but the skill level of HoTS was clearly higher

No, this is only true if the level of competition remains the same or increases.
However in SC2 that is probably the case, so it's fine.

Or they break their wrists, necks, backs, and eventually can't play to the level they used to play. MVP at top form would, I believe, still beat any player playing today.

This indeed looks like a mech build.

At a certain point yes (if you're getting closer to 30 maybe). But for the most part your skill increases with hours played.
Look at Inno, TY, Stats, ByuN etc. These guys took 5-10 years of professional play before they reached the top
