I was wondering if many of us have some shared fond memories of BW. Or simply something specific to you, that you'd want to share? Stuff that makes us love the game.
One such memory would have to be when we kept losing our CDs, but still wanted to play on LAN. So we'd have like 1 CD to share on 4-5 guys, where one would fire up BW, get to the Multiplayer-thingy, then the next and the next until the last one had the CD and made the game.
And of course, sometime we'd forget that we didn't have the CD, made it crash, then ran to the next room (dormitory) to get the CD back.
Maybe not really the most fun, but it was one of those things that made BW what it is. Like how retarded the Dragoons are. And listening to your friend scream in frustration when coming over, due to a Dragoon stuck on his ramp.

I loved the days of just sitting in chat and chilling out with the other users. The quiz bot was very fun to. I loved playing team games against bots/other players. Most of the games I played where UMS though.
A day at school, Tarpit D, evolves. A lot of fond memories there. I still remember my CD key number as well. Had to use it so many times to log onto the Battle.net forums back in the day.

I still remember being amazed when my buddy who introduced me to SC explained me Lurkers the first time. It made me want to play Zerg.

My best memory was when I was still in the "only defend, too afraid to ever attack" phase, I was like 12 years old, and I would have this epic 4x4 game on hunters on a pirated server. Everyone was really bad and barely attacked, so the game was well over 30 minutes at this point, but it felt intense as heck. Nobody ever went into late game units such as defilers, except this one guy who did try to use them, and everyone felt like they were beyond broken. This went on for another few minutes, when I had a knock on my door - my friends said they hadn't seen me outside in almost a week, and asked if I wanted to come out to hang out. I used to go out every single day until BW came into my life. I had to mix the two from there on out.

Watching Proleague in 360p at an inconvenient time of the day and still enjoying it a shit ton. Ridiculous ceremonies, cheap metal music between matches, Korean commentators doing their thing, absolute nonames causing major upsets, snipe tactics, wacky maps, death zooms, SKT zergs, KT playoff zergs, all-kills, reverse all-kills, rooting for Airforce ACE and so on, and so on, and so on. I want that back.

I want that back. I feel that too, but I can't help but also feel that what I really want back is how young I was when all of this was happening. I can't just wake up at 5:00 AM on a weekday to watch Brood War anymore, or stay up until 3:00 AM, 1-3 times a week. Just not feasible.
Don't get me wrong, the content itself was fantastic too. I want it back as well, and I'm super glad that ASL is stepping up heavily. But, ASL can't completely fill the gap.
I am writing this at 5:00 AM tbh lol.

Every time I connected to battle.net via dial-up in 98-99 I would shout my irl friend's real name in the lobby to see if he was there, much to his embarrassment.
I had no idea about friends lists or /w at that point.

Playing 3v3, 4v4, (or own made up game called Pentagon for when we had 5 people), or even FFA on random blizzard maps. 3v3 on Close Encounters is a classic.

I'm not completely sure about this since it was back in 98, but didn't SC not have b.net at the beginning? Because I remember that we kinda had to connect with our modem to another friends modem to play online. Could be wrong though since this was our first online game after Red Alert.
Also, coming from a small village that was known in the national scene because we had some of the best, including the best for quite some time, BW players in the country was kinda nice

2005-6ish. I was at uni and me and my friends play bw already but on a very noob level. for some reason, I stumbled upon the korean gaming scene and kept it from my friend, hehehe. So after a week or so of binge watching, I became BW God! APM was still 100ish and still noob strategy, but at least I was cleaner with my builds and have a more definite strategy in mind. Two specific moments of glory.
1. After some notable 4v4 games, the previous best challenged me to a 1v1. I was secretly hoping for this. Best of 5 games, 3-0. I remember it like it was yesterday. Game 1, I play Protoss vs. Terran, Destination. Mass Gate harass transition to DT. It was brutal. Game 2, FS, I play zerg he plays terran still. Mass hydras to lurkers (the only time mass hydras vs terran works lol). It was a long battle but i contained him to his main and nat at 11, and eventually finished him with Ultraling. Game 3, he was furious already, and said I was map cheating. So we played BGH, I played terran (yeah, show off right) while he played his "real best race" Zerg. Ok whatevs. I camp with simcity bunker barracks and 2 tanks and then mass cloaked wraiths. Poor thing's overlord were orgying in a corner, so it was a genocide and his hydras and mutas looked silly vs. my cloaked wraiths. The game ended by me hunting for his hidden gas, that motherfucker. Needless to say, friendship over lol.
2. Money maps (I dunnot what they were called, but one where minerals were next to base and you can have 9999999 units). I had way more highest tier techs faster than anyone. So while they were just teching to mutas or wraiths, I already had 1 or 2 control groups of Carriers/Guardians/BCs.
That's my 15 second of BW glory!

My school was like 40min by bus away from home, so would have to wake up quite early for 8am class. It was a time when kids didn't have cellphones yet. So imagine me, at like 7:15am calling my friend's house, asking his mom to let me speak to him. Then came the regular question: - Hey, how do you feel about going to school today? - Shitty... fuck school - Ok, so 8am at the PC club. And then all day nonstop starcraft, cs, and some other silly games. I was scolded by my teachers, got an official reprimand that got hanged in school corridors. Parents were super mad when they found out i skipped HALF classes of a whole semester, but if I had the choice again, without blinking i'd do the same. Amazing experienced, friendships, rivalries etc.
It was then (like 2001~2002) we found out about pro scene. SKY OSL was the first for me, made such a huge impression. Been on and off following pro scene since.

I mostly have neutral or negative memories :/ Probably, because most of my BW time was just 1v1 ladder, countless games, and I was bad at it, and insecure as a persone, too; speaking of that, BW did help me grow personally, or at least I think so. The fondest were actually playing 1v1 or BGHs with my on-line friends, some of them were so very nice that they still occupy a place in my heart. Sadly, I won't hear from them again. Oh, and the single player campaigns...
|
I used to play with my friend on 56k modem. We used up two phone lines so we could talk on phone while playing and coordinate our attacks. We mostly played 3v3 or 4v4 BGH... sometimes we'd be assholes and unally our teammates and try to wipe out everybody. Good times...

I remember my transition from b.net games to iccup in late 2006 or early 2007, probably was like season 2 or 3 of iccup. I was 12, and thought I was hot shit, played a zvp. Never had seen a forge expand in my life, blew my fucking mind that someone could do that. Lost like 40 zerglings to a single dark templar, couldnt even secure my natural base.
I also remember a few months later being deep DEEP into a loss streak, something along the lines of 3-50, and getting so frustrated at probe harassment/gas steal, that I immediately left the game the second a probe got into my base, rushed to teamliquid and made a thread screaming about how they were rigged.
The moments broodwar broke me, I remember those.

Sniping hackers/abusers in battle.net ladder back in (02-03?) on "Faster" speed. Those were the days... Yan[GG]ua, J.Lo, etc

We had dialup with a 2 hour daily limit so i remember having to plan out my time meticulously.Start out with a few melee games and finish with some short ums games.FFAs were out. Many times i was disconnected during a game due to the 2 hr limit expiring. And if anyone called the house that would also disconnect.I think about 25% of my stats were disconnects in those days.

I have fond memories of Proxy 2gating in the middle of the map, building pylon's in the choke on tau cross to block workers, stealing terran gas and proxy shield battery rush's vs Zerg, so glorious, fond memories....

Was it? I thought it was automatically set to faster but I could be wrong. Having dial-up and discing when getting a phone call was hella rage inducing!

i liked playing team melee with Pez, noname, skyline, Sziky and vorti etc. We also watched pro replays on 1x speed and analized them till late night until i slept while sitting.

I was 5 and had just peed in bed. Usually my dad is up late working, studying etc so I would get caught on the way to the laundry and be scolded. But this night he didn't notice me creep across the study towards the laundry. I got curious and went to see what he was doing after I changed pants. He was playing BW and his burning command center was floating in midair surrounded by lings. He wasn't mad that I peed my pants (or maybe he didn't notice), he just showed me what the game was instead. Not really BW but BW related memory I guess. Now dad and I are just awkard- too stoic and Korean to talk to each other. I kinda miss getting scolded by him and learning BW after.
