Its a shame because the premise could be so glorious, but it ends up being a mishmash where you add so many ingredients your not even sure what your cooking anymore.

So it made for a really good fantasy system where you want your main characters to be on par with minor regional powers, but the world doesn't completely degenerate to something ridiculous (once powerful people can defeat infinitely many mooks, it doesn't really make sense to form organizations). I don't read Blood Sign but I watched Index and tried to read it and just wow. The characters are so bad they make it impossible to enjoy the world. Mahouka has a similar issue where the world is a lot more interesting than the leads but thankfully the side characters there aren't too bad. It's just the two leads that actively detract from the story when they on the same page. I think what happens is the way writing, especially Light Novels in japan are done may not lead to well written characters. From what I've read about the industry it seems like the way they operate is to do more concept pitches with maybe a short story attached. If it's something they want to publish they then go in overdrive cranking out as many novels as possible in a short time frame. So there's no real time for an author to really improve or plan out characters well. The initial concept is what does most of the driving work. The publishers also seem to push the authors do follow certain frameworks for how to write the story. It's why you see basically the exact same characters across multiple different LN. Obviously not all LN suffer, there are great authors out there. Railgun I enjoyed a lot more. It's fluffy and silly most of the time but the leads are enjoyable enough.

+ Show Spoiler + it's not incest if one of them is genetically engineered PogChamp I was also surprised by how fast the authors are expected to churn out visual novels. it's like 2-3 books a year, each book is like what, 250 pages? Maybe more. No wonder there tends to be so much stuffing in them and the storylines aren't streamlines at all most of the time. It's just like manga authors getting pushed to publish one chapter a week, until the day their health finally gives out. Well, not much use complaining about how japanese industry meatgrinders artists into money.

On a side note, I watch some episodes of the first season of Shirayuki, and man is it still a fun warm anime whenever Shirayuki is with Zen. Might end up watching more at this rate lol.

oh man I feel so bad for this author, no matter how shitty his LN might be. They didn't have the time to "animate" or much less put her body in the shot so she's just flying shoulders+arms+head the producers announced on the evening of November 20, roughly 30 hours before the new episode was supposed to start, that episode 7 will be delayed one week, due to “circumstances related to production progress.”

A different case are originals. Story often lacks in second seasons because they run out of ideas etc. I'm going to skim through my list to see what the numbers say for the shows I have watched. Adaptions - Akagami no Shirayuki-hime (S2 was a tad better) - Black Lagoon (about the same) - Chihayafuru (s2 was a bit better) - Clannad (After Story was way better) - Durarara (all pretty similar but s1 was the worst and s4 was the best imho) - Fairy Tail (not sure you can count these long-running shounen but s2 was way worse) - Ghost in the Shell: SAC (both incredible) - Haikyuu!! (s2 was weaker than s1 and s3) - K-ON (s2 definitely worse than s1) - Noragami (s2 was worse) - Rakugo (I like s2 a bit better) - Shingeki no Bahamut (s1&2 are about the same) - Shingeki no Kyojin (s2 was definitely worse than s1) - Spice & Wolf (both similarly good) - Sword Art Online (s2 was worse) - Tamayura (very varied throughout the seasons) - Uchouten Kazuko (s2 was better than s1) - Ushio to Tora (s2 was worse than s1) S2 better = 5, S2 worse = 6, similar/varied = 7 Originals - Aldnoah.Zero (s2 was even worse) - Mobile Suit Gundam (Zeta was way better than the Original) - Psycho Pass (s2 way worse than s1) S2 better = 1, S2 worse = 2 Skimming through I realised that I have watched lots of first seasons but the following seasons are still on my ptw...

Checked my MAL and on the shows I shared with Miragee, I indeed most of the time had the same score difference between S2/S1. Seems like a pretty good list. To add to that, here are some examples of shows I rated higher in S2 than S1 (and obviously I can't say I remember all the reasons perfectly :D): Assassination Classroom, Black Lagoon, Boku no Hero Academia, Hajime no Ippo (new challenger), Jormungand, Sengoku Basara Goes without saying that it's easier to have a better second season if your first season was not-so-great, and there is this sweet spot where the show is good enough for me to watch S2, but meh enough for S2 to be better :D. That's why there are also more cases of terrible S2 after a good S1, rather than the opposite.

Offhand, I can only think of two series where s2 was significantly better received than s1. Clannad and Nanoha. Nobody watches Clannad for Clannad - they watch it for After Story. It's kinda cheating because it's a Key adaptation, so the entirety of the first season is throwaway material. It's just buildup for true route stuff. On the other hand, Nanoha A's is just that good. They took what worked in s1 and really improved on it.

Railgun S2 was really solid too. Sisters arc was incredible. I enjoy all the fluff too so that didn't detract. GITS S2 I think was more political which is fascinating but S1 was also amazing Monogatari - All the seasons are pretty great. Bake had amazing parts mostly because I love Senjou but 2 was also great with the fire sisters. Kingdom - Really started to get into the groove in S2 for me. S1 was just a long set up for the characters Strike Witches - Both seasons were great. Yuru Yuri - Felt like S2 was a bit better but they both pretty great. Haven't seen S3 Yozakura Quartet - I don't even know how to quantify what is s2/s3. It meshes around pretty weird but they all quite fun Darker Than Black - S2 was a bit worse Magi - S1 and S2 were both pretty good but I did think S2 had both better moments and worse. So tough to say Jojo - S2 onwards is amazing. I liked some of the music in S1 but it wasn't overall that memorable Dog Days - S2 was fun, honestly dont remember much difference in quality Log Horizon - S2 way worse Symphogear - Again hard to quantify, think S2 was a bit better but S1 was great. Chihaya - Both seasons about the same. It picked up momentum in S2 though which helped. K-ON - I preferred S2 but they again both pretty great Honey and Clover - S2 I think is a bit better but this show is hard to really write about. It has this weird quality to it that sucks you in. Durarara - All amazing but think S2 onwards it gets a bit better since all the characters are in place Nanoha - S2 is superior 3-Gatsu - I hear S2 it gets even better which I find hard to believe, how can it get any better than this? That's most of the shows I can think of that have multiple seasons. It's pretty tough when you have some shows like Monster having 70 eps, do you split that into seasons? Overall it's a bit silly to blanket statement that S2 are worse. It's also fairly new phenomenon to have 13 ep seasons. So maybe it's better to look at shows as one entity with 2 halves, that way you can judge older 20 ep shows. edi: dam missed some shows I've watched that Miragee mentioned. I'm mostly on board with his list.

I'd also agree with 3-gatsu s2 being better than s1 but s1 was also great, so it's almost a wash for me there.
