Didn't know whether they could make a tank protagonist interesting in the long run, but if he keeps adding party members and the shield keeps improving its versatility then there's a lot of potential here for fun action.
Also, Raphtalia is adorable and they actually spent some time developing her which I appreciate. I also do like it as I'm a sucker for isekai but I maintain that it just feels rushed to me. The entire 2nd episode + Show Spoiler +dealing with slave girl, her trauma and essentially overcomming it, at least to some degree feels like something they should have covered over multiple episodes to me. It was incredible obvious what the conclusion would be from the start and while I'm not against it in principle I do question how it was delivered in the anime.
Yes I know he treated her nicely for a couple days and that's how it should happen but I question how fast she was able to deal with her trauma. I would not have been surprised one bit had she actually been frozen in place in that cave, not able to move, nor fight no matter what you say to her given how severe they made that trauma look like.
So tl;dr, I don't mind the story but I would have preferred had they done that over the course of 2 or maybe even 3 episodes or made it more apparent that a lot of time passed between cuts. This way it made it look like all that's important to the author/anime is how the MC reacts in that situation, rather than how slave-girl behaves/suffers in that situation and eventually overcomes her trauma to some degree. That being said, I do still find it enjoyable and the outcry over it is hilarious so I'm tuning in every week. But the description "lazy writing" is one I'd agree with based on the first 2 episodes. At least for the Anime version that we're seeing here. There's so much that I want the author/director to expand on and to show us if they're going out of their way to include all this in the plot but at the end of the day that doesn't seem to matter.
I mean most of that just sounds like normal "book vs show" stuff. I thought for a single episode it did a good job of getting me immediately invested in the character.

With the translation of shield bro I read... the anime is basically an upgraded version of the manga. While it's pretty much a 1 for 1 copy of the manga with the sequence of events... the writing in the anime is slightly better actually. So yes, lazy writing of the manga artist. Normally it's the other way around where the anime cuts corners on writing and ruins the source material by rushing things. But this is pretty much how it happens in the manga iirc.
|
But the manga isn't the source material? The anime is based on the light novel.

I see you guys are discussing what is currently my favorite new anime. I haven't read the manga, I typically don't touch source material. I don't mind anime being mildly cliche if it's done well. If it continues on at the quality is now, which it hopefully does, it could be one of my favorite anime ever.
As for his cute little raccoon companion developing so quickly in the face of all her pas trauma, well, if she's to be as badass as it's foreshadowing - then it's makes sense she would overcome that stuff quickly.
Are there any other good action anime right now? I also like how I got reincarnated as a slime and hinomaru sumo and black clover. Not sure if any of those are even continuing into spring, though. One punch man is supposed to be in spring lineup, right?

Boogiepop feels rushed and is kinda up its own ass. It's still watchable though.
The adaptation of Kaguya is actually good. I'm pleasantly surprised. The presentation is almost Shaft-like. It's not the kind of production that I'd typically expect from A-1.
Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai is neat. Somebody on staff is a plane nut though and through. The machinery is very detailed, and they went through the motions of a run-up, so someone's clearly adamant about this stuff. It's pretty heavy on CG (the throwaway characters are 2D, amusingly enough). The dogfighting had that odd, almost sluggish aircraft movement which is actually pretty true to form with what you see in guncam footage. So basically it's GuP in the sky and people probably die this time. I'm in.
Shieldbro's whatever. The drama's more exasperating than anything else. Subtlety really isn't its strong suit. I'd put it on par with Slime - nice presentation, suspect writing.

I've read the Yakusoku manga and I've been thoroughly disappointed + Show Spoiler +all the tension is lost after you realize that despite spending days in a hostile world infested by human eating demons a large group of 6 - 12 year old regular kids didn't even get a single injury... Probably nothing bad is going to happen, so you can just chill. Didn't find the characters all that compelling either tbh. Yeah, they're all kids, but HxH or From the Abyss manages to have interesting characters that are kids.

Haru is the most adorable character since Squidgirl and is unanimously going to win best girl of the year... and I'm a dog person.
Kaguya-sama is pretty fun too.

I think it's a good gag manga with lots of fan service.

It is good, I like what I've read

new girl in slime isekai is so easily best girl not a fan of the female lizardmen (lizardwomen?) basicly turning into humans though. I get that they want them to look pretty and that it's easier to get someone to think they're sexy if they look more human but that's going too far for me personally. I want a good amount of them to decidedly still look like monsters and not just the guys.

All previous monsters designs got more human when evolved, so I'm not surprised. It's one of the usual isekai things. "I was born as the weakest creature but can copy skills so effectively it doesn't matter" isn't too far off from "it's technically monster musume even if they look like cosplaying humans".

I've been enjoying The Quintessential Quintuplets (what a name!), which seems to a comedy harem show with a difference. My roommate is a Cat seems to be very promising. The main chracter in Girly Airforce seems kind of dumb, but seems to be well paced. Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka seems to hold some promise in how the characters develop and where the plot goes. ENDRO! seems to be a sickly sweet comedy but it's only funny if you are vaguely familiar with RPG tropes. Most are on their 2nd episodes. It's too early for a real recommendation.

watched 5tobun. All I can say is that there's lots of boobs to be found in there. Also, voicetrap like crazy so I'll keep watching.
Oh just saw the comment above my own. 5tobun = qintuple anime but much easier to say
