Very good posts by Sinensis. People need to read this in order to fully grasp the situation (the link should be added in the OP). There are less shady organizations that deal with actual problems.

The link in a nutshell: - Last year, the organization spent $8,676,614. Only 32% went to direct services. - Charity Navigator rates their accountability 2/4 stars because they lack an external audit committee. - According to Council on Foreign Relations, Invisible Children has manipulated facts for strategic purposes, exaggerating the scale of LRA abductions and murders and emphasizing the LRA's use of innocent children as soldiers. - By supporting Invisible Children, you are supporting the Ugandan army and Sudan People’s Liberation Army, both accused of rape and looting. - Kony is no longer active in Uganda and hasn’t been since 2006, thus there is even less reason to support the Ugandan army.

KONY 2012
the hipster revolution
|
I would find myself drawn towards this cause more if I knew the money donated was being used to raise an armed milita of volunteers from facebook to hunt Kony down, than an elaborate ticket campaign for America's youth. Somewhat like a 21st century spanish republician civil war analogue
Regardless, any campaign that promises to bring a man like Kony to justice gets my vengeful seal of approval.

Everywhere I look, oh my fucking god.

i don't doubt this guy is bad, but when you see people posting this all over youtube on random videos it lost any importance it ever had.
|
It's funny, I told my sister that Kony has been pretty much defeated for several years, and she responds, "You're going to trust one article?"

So where did this "hype" come from all of a sudden? Nobody gave a crap yesterday.
That guy has been doing that for years and there are hundreds of other warlords comitting similar crimes all over the place in africa as well...
|
Good 'ole Facebook activism. Funny how ignorant the majority of the people that share this are.

this. Kony is not the only warlord remaining and not the biggest one aswell. What about the other people?
I am sorry but if people cant see the scam behind this vid and all the hype all of a sudden, then i guess, i should start making a crusade for Ahmedinejad.
deus vult! chip in 5 bucks for a shirt that says ahmedinejad 2012 and a holy cross made by 2 nukes under.

It worries me that millions of people blindly supporting something they haven't even scrutinized can actually make an impact.
I would be fine with this if it were simply a guy trying to raise awareness and maybe donations, but it isn't. There is a specific agenda and the people who watch the 30 minute video are fed an overly emotional and overly simplified message, and 99% of people will accept it as true and not think twice about it and donate money and spread the word.
People really need to be more critical when it comes to this sort of thing.

Should be a nice profit for invisible children, amazing what one emotionally charged piece of viral propaganda can do.

Kony 2012 = the new Occupy Wall Street?

I can't believe so few people have heard of this guy before. It's like now he's getting all this attention. He should have been getting much more attention years ago.

Kony is a bad guy and everything, but it's not like he's the only warlord in Africa. The conflict diamond situation is basically the same, but that came and went, and so did the starving people of Somalia. These thisngs are always problems, and a lot of people make themselves look like fools for being swept up in the sensationalism of the cause and acting like it's their new mission in life, and then 6 months later no one even remembers. My facebook disgusts me right now, with the amount of mobilized, manipulated people.
Now, somebody tell me how I can break it to my girlfriend. She cried watching the video and won't shut up about it?
Edit:

I think that Invisible children is trying to get more donations to help better their "charity" and not really trying to help this cause.

Tell it to her bluntly. I don't smoke, but I need a blunt right now. Thanks for informing me about the true nature of this charity Teamliquid.
