Depending on the outcome of the coup, the US/NATO wouldn't necessarily be upset if Endogan was replaced by a democratic leader that was more, eh, in line with our goals and interests in the region as opposed to Endogan's Islamism and authoritarianism. No the military won't change on the Kurds especially since things have heated up again there but Erdogan's policy has still been a disaster. It didn't necessarily have to turn into a low-grade guerrilla war in the southeast with attacks targeting Turkish police and military in half the country.

If there is actually a coup underway in Turkey that is insane. Turkey is the most stable country in the area (other than Israel); it borders Syria and controls the flow of refugees into Europe. Not only that, it is a NATO power. If the Islamist government were ejected from rule, the large mass of Islamist support in the country would not take that lying down and there is a HUGE amount of weapons in the region. Not to mention Turkey is already in a state of war with Kurdish groups. Scary times...
