In cooperation with Blizzard, the ESL are offering 1,000 invites to the Heart of the Swarm Beta!
We have 1,000 invites to give away the most active StarCraft II players on the ESL globally. Every match played, whether in a cup, VERSUS, ladder, tournament or the new A-Series, counts.
In order to ensure a diverse range of players are in the beta and promote StarCraft II on a national level, the invites will be distributed by country, to the most active players between now and the end of Thursday 4th October.
The more players that play StarCraft II from each country, the bigger share of keys they get. So grab your compatriots and get them to play to ensure you and your friends have a better chance to get a key!
tl;dr; Where do I play?
For Battle.net EU - http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2 (and all local ESL sections!)
We have Go4SC2 (€200 on Sunday, €500 Monthly Finals): http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/go4sc2/
We have VERSUS (instant matchmaking): http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/versus/play/
We have the new A-Series (opening Monday), which will also qualify for the €500 Go4SC2 Monthly Finals, http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/1on1/aseries/
We have cups: http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/cups
We have a ladder: http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/1on1/ladder/
For Battle.net Americas - http://www.nationalesl.com/us/sc2/versus/play/
For Battle.net Oceania - http://www.nationalesl.com/au/sc2/versus/play/
For Battle.net Asia - http://www.esl-asia.net/asia/sc2/versus/play/
Hopefully my colleagues from the rest of the world will announce extra tournaments soon to give you more chances to play!

Nice I'll make sure to play more on the NA ladder if more plays sign up, Also, are there plans on bringing the NA Cups back from esl?

the distribution % thing is unnecessary

We understand the ESL is a bit overwhelming for new users; it's hard to host so many things and keep it simple at the same time. Is there anything in particular you need help with? I provided the links above to make it as easy as possible to go direct to the action.
Though I'd like to think that my EU SC2 section is better than most for being easy to find stuff!

Do ESL Clanwar Ladder and 2v2 Tourney count aswell?

so basically you can workerrush every game and even if you lose it doesnt matter since the player with the most games gets a key. seriously?!
|
If we live in shitty country with shitty pool of active players and i know a guy from the same country to play against, can we (just me and him and sometimes maybe someone else) mass 1v1 games on country ladder?
edit: ok i think our ladder is not working at all so it doesn't matter

Was in que for the US play vs for 25 minutes without hitting anyone. Site is designed like utter shit and it's almost impossible to navigate for cups. Each page is just a ton of unorganized small text and random shit all over the place.
As much as I'd love a beta key, it's just not worth it. They have very small traffic for their non- eu sections and I guess this giveaway was to increase it, but there's simply no excuse for having such a bad website.

Awesome initiative to give more exposure to your community instead of just mindlessly playing ladder vs one faceless opponent after another

When did the na esl tournies stop?

1000 keys? That sounds like a lot. Probably my best chance to get a key, been wanting to play a lot more anyway.

Ok so I went to the EU SC2 ranking list and there are like 218 players in it TOTAL. http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/ui/versus/rankings?page=3 Do I understand you right that players eligible for beta key from EU have to show up in that ranking? I also looked through all of them (5 pages lol) and there is not a single one from Ukraine. Does it mean that if the list of players grows while there will be still no players from Ukraine I will not receive an invite even if I play all day long?
On the other side I dont understand why would Blizzard give away 1000 invites to support other ladders instead of just giving it to those loyal to their own... Yeah, Blizzard works in mysterious ways ...

No, the VERSUS rankings is VERSUS only; we don't have any global all features (ladders, cups, aseries, leagues, versus) ranking, though I will see if something quickly can be knocked up on Monday
It's in Blizzard's interest to support their partners; we have run 1000s of cups and tournaments around the world, we contribute to the activity of SC2 and do our best to grow local scenes

If we didn't do that, then there would be no incentive for you to bring more players from your country to play with!
If we don't distribute by country, then players from countries that are already active on ESL would have an even more enormous advantage.
Our local partners will hopefully be announcing extra cups and promotion to give their local players more chances to play. The arrangement from Blizzard was a little last minute, and if we didn't go live now, everyone would have to wait one week or even longer to get keys.

I just tried using the site for the first time and it's extremely hard to use. I was able to get to the matchmaking section and a partner popped up with a choice of two maps. I picked one then it said neither of us picked a map still. The metropolis map choice picture link was broken too. I then started frantically navigating the site trying to figure out how to do anything. My opponents battle.net id and name weren't listed. I couldn't figure out how to add mine to my profile.
I couldn't even figure out how to chat. I had to keep refreshing the page with the messages to get his messages, and then send him pm's. I navigated away from the matchmaking page once and I couldn't even figure out how to get back there through the site. I had to reopen the link in the op to get back to the matchmaking page so I could view my opponent's chat. I won't ever be using this. I've already spent too much time trying to figure it out, and it's way too time consuming to use.

The chat relies on having an active xmpp connection and javascript, so it's possible either you have something blocking it (browser, browser settings, addons/plugins like noscript, or even firewall). If you do try again, make sure your browser is up to date (or try another browser, at least firefox/chrome always work best)
I have just reuploaded all the map images to at least solve that
Thanks for trying, hopefully the US admins will organise some cups that you may find easier to play in!

Probably the same thing a lot of people complain about. The site simply has poor design. MLG had a bad site, they acknowledged and fixed it, and now it is much more navigable. It shouldn't take someone new several minutes to figure out how to do anything.

Hi,
I am very interested in getting a beta key and I would also be willing to invest a lot of time in this task. However I'm not in for that If this goes along the way of trading and abusing like it happened with picfarming in SC2.
How are you going to ensure that most keys don't go to leavers and abusers? I've started an hour ago and already had two people giving me freewins. Please ESL keep the scene clean and don't support leavers and multi account playing. What are you going to do if after the four days there are people with over thousand wins which is clearly impossible to get from legit playing?

FFS make a gameaccount guys. its so annoying if you don't have one AND are too fucking lazy to look mine up...

Guess i should switch to zerg and 6 pool >< Guy from my country is closing in on 50 games sofar and all he does is 6 pool.

This is going to be really tough to deal with btw. Lots of people are just going to abuse the system to the max and I see no way you can make it fair for everyone. Lots of people will just cheese all day, I guess that's alright because it's still playing.
Some people are going to leave or trade wins, this can be checked in replays and such - but still a lot of work.
But the worst thing will be the people who make new accounts and join in less "developed" countries and mass games there. There's almost no way to prove they arren't from the country they're pretending to be. IP's can easily be spoofed and I doubt you'd ask everybody if they are who they're supposed to be in their supposed language.
But still GL, hope lots of legit people get these.

*edit* I found the "Play vs" button at the top which opened the chat again, but looks like my opponent isn't in there anymore, so he probably closed the chat accidentally also or just got frustrated and left. Is this thought to be intuitive by your dev team?

Been trying to find an oponent for ages now, this is trash.. How am I suppoost to rack up dem wins when I cant even find an opoennt.
Edit:
Unfortunately, no suitable opponent could yet be found. What would you like to do? Continue Searching Stop Searching
4 times in a F*#&ing row now.. Whats the point..
|
I must admit, I'm finding opponents, but it takes forever, and the website is just miserable to work with... I'm only suffering it out because i only see like 3 American players with more than 10 games played... It does feel like a huge waste of time though, and if I don't get a key after all the effort i'm puttting in, I simply won't support ESL ever again, because this is largely time consuming.
|
I finally manages to get a game under the "Play Vs now!" but its taken over 20 minutes to find a 3rd game.
Is there a quicker way of finding oponents, I really dont care what league I play against.. I just want to play some games.
|
sadly this is nothing but a huge waste of time for a beta key. I played 5 or 6 games and all of them have been 6pool/cannonrush/4gate shit. This whole concept of playing as much possible is really stupid and in the end only hurts ESL´s effort to promote their ladder.

vs is the quickest way

I registered on the ESL site like 4 hours ago and still waiting for that password or activation to be sent to my email... I tried to get a new one but it says:
You have already requested a new password within the last 24 hours, please wait until you get the email or wait until tomorrow for a new try. Is blizzard just trolling us so that we learn how bad the competition is and appreciate the battle.net more?? Because I really do.
|
The site is so awkwardly designed i cant seem to search for another opponent after 3 games, any help? I really liked the productions esl has made before so I hope they can do as well here :\
|
|
sorry guys but i must laugh hard when i read your posts. You just find out what every german player knows for long time
ESL-website is the worst of all gaming sites...
This website is like a puzzle game. I always do good in flash-puzzle-games but this one is just to hard for me. I gave up long time ago.
The only good thing is the option to rate your opponent after game for bm and fairness. This makes sure people are not total assholes in esl ladder.
|
|
Played 10 games so far and have encountered no cheeses. Unless you count the 4 gate in a PvP :D
Rest were really good macro games and every player I have played so far have been diamond and up.
A good idea, but unfortunately I can see many people abusing the system...
|
I'd play if I didn't feel like I'd probably have to play from now until Oct.4th straight just to have a chance...
Changing it to whoever gets ranked the highest after that time probably would have been fairer.
|

there are less popel doing this than you might think.
|
So if i'm living in a country, which hasn't many starcraft 2 players, Im not going to get a key even if i'm very active yes?
|
If you are more active than anyone else in your country you'll probably get one.
|
I think that 70-80% of esl games come from clan war ladder. Just play alot with your clan (and most clans are nationals) So that helps your nation alot.
|
Be prepared to face proxy everything, 4-gates and 6 pools. It is a waste of time if you play standard because there are so many cheeser's, you will never get a key against those guys because they just mass cheese games. One guy had 70 games played after ~3 hours, which is pretty ridiculous.

It is also very important to stay withing the limits of average MMR to (or whatever it is) find opponents faster.

It only counts games since the start of the competition.
IMHO it should enforce a minimum win percentage (or a certain stability in the matchmaking system) or something like that. It's the best way to avoid pseudogames.
|
I am not gonna participate in that. There are too many ways to exploit the system. Just not worth the time to play against players that just cheese you to get some quick games over with.
|
Well i dont like system too, but i'm going to take a try, hope my time wont be wasted....
Edit. BTW if you meet rager in that matchmaking, and if he doesnt accept his loss ,match doesnt count. What a lame thing, playhem is way better, because you can upload replay atleast....
|
people are exploiting it. i see the same people playing against each other and cheesing all the time.
|
Hmm, playing it right now and not that much abuse on Masters level. BUT: You only get PvPs because Protoss have the shortest average game time in standard play of all races, especially its mirror.
|
I would disagree with that, i got only one toss in my 10 games.
|
important is, that the country you are hin has more matches than the country others are playing in. so if you are spanish and play on esl.eu/es you help to get keys for spain. if you play on nationalesl.com/us you help to get keys for NESL and so on

Its so ironic, I hardly play SC and I was invited to the beta by Blizzard. Thanks Blizzard, unfortunately I'm getting trashed because everyone is 10x better than me .

those who simply got invited got really lucky :D

Hihi I competed in Twitch.tv competition and didn't had to play and got a beta key <3 wohoo I really like this competitions though to get beta keys, only not so fair thing is that people with less time have a smaller chance to win.

The NA player named "Yip" disputed all three games I beat him in and I didn't get credit for the games at all. Who do I talk to about getting this fixed? I don't see an upload replay button or anyone to contact on the site under FAQ.
This website is pretty cool btw, takes no time to get someone to play against! :D

I think it's 1000 between all 3 regions, and I'm not sure how many are playing in the Eu/Asia regions, although I'd imagine the Eu region has more players than us, seeing as the site is natively used by more Eu players.
I also wish i knew how the keys were distributed. Do i have a higher chance if i simply have more games played than everyone else? Or is it time spend on the website? Or does win rate factor into it?
|
Good luck everyone, I hope I get a key :D.. Been playing +/- 40 games per day <3
|
I have 62 games so far.. I hope I don't need many more as I have work all week.
Best of luck to you all and if I meet you on ESL ladder I WILL DESTROY YOU! ♥

Sorry to double post but is there a way to play on NA and EU with the same ESL account but with different battlenet ID's?
If not, what is the best way to do this? For example, I am from EU and its 4aqm.. now players are online on ESL.. But there will be in NAwhere it is say.. 9-11pm?

http://www.nationalesl.com/us/add_gameaccount/?type=sc2_bnet_us In your gameaccount settings, you can add any gameaccount for any games (including various B.net Server). The link above is a direct link to add USB.net gameaccount.

So if you hold #1 in your country/region for the time of this you're pretty much guaranteed a spot I'd imagine right.

How does it work if you play on 2 servers.. are all the games still counted for your country towards getting that beta?
I play EU and NA.. but dont wanna wast game son NA if they are not counted towards the beta.

Is it just number of games or does win ratio take into account?
Edit: Also, are there no cups for the US? I tried searching but the ESL website is kinda confusing. x_x;;

After gifting keys to friends of pros they are neglecting 1000 (more) random battle.net users to increase ESL popularity. I am not against this kind of marketing, but why not give it to more who opt into the beta? Is this how the next few rounds of beta invites going to go? Great idea Blizzard.

They send out waves of 8-12k every week. This is only a small chunk of that.

I solved the ESL puzzle and managed to find my way to a VS match! Success =))
Too bad I got streamrolled by a high level master player with 77% winrate xD

any NA player for quick match on esl? :D
|
Hi! We have no cups in the US currently, but maybe we can hold one before the 4th of October.
It is not the win ratio that counts, it is the number of matches you play.
Now our team will delete all Fake matches (matches where you play a friend again and again and not really play but enter a fake result after a few seconds)
Fake matches obviously don't count =) We had a few, but not that many. Its okay =) Just wanted to let the honost people know, that I care.

thanks for the hint, as I said, if people do certain weird things, our system marks them already and then we "only" have to give sanctions and talk to them.
everybody is treatet equally, cheating faking, fake-matching (trash talking) and all that is not allowed obviously and we take care of it.
players can help us by using the report functionality on versus. but please only use it when somebody is really unfair.

Feedback: - Print gameaccounts in the chat window - Specify which version of Antiga Shipyard. Only "Antiga Shipyard" is the ladder version, but the ESL version is much better - Give a link to the rules before the matchmaking is done - For the future, you obviously need to provide a better serivce in versus than the SC2 matchmaking. Let people choose matchups, specific maps, extra ladders for the offrace etc. Reading all the posts in reddit and TL, there is a demand for this. Normally, the player pool is too small for this, but the beta invites would have been a oppurtunity. Honestly, nobody is going to stick with versus after Oct 4th, because it has no benefits at all to the normal SC2 ladder. - The benefits for the premium users kinda destroy the integrity of your ladder, but oh well, money.

Everything else: an overhaul of the VERSUS UI is on the big list of things to do, but at the moment we're finishing the new A-Series system, game integration for all the CS games (like we have for LoL and BF3, with automatic results), anti-cheat improvements, etc.
Remember that the ESL is global and we support every game possible, and we have to prioritise a lot, especially based on what is needed most for the players we have (CS/S/GO & LoL make up the vast majority of our players), and we have a lot less development resources than people think (we are hiring more at the moment)!
Unfortunately for SC2 VERSUS is still too rough around the edges for being anywhere near a Bnet killer, but it does give the users we have a very easy way to play matches on the ESL with a slightly more personal interaction with your opponent, and usually more serious players, so you can get reasonable matches without risking your ladder points.

Honestly, nobody is going to stick with versus after Oct 4th, because it has no benefits at all to the normal SC2 ladder. - The benefits for the premium users kinda destroy the integrity of your ladder, but oh well, money. Map names: we don't have all the ESL maps up on Americas yet, but I will switch the Euro maps to ESL now (we have all except Atlantis) - Rules is linked on the screen that you click to search. Unfortunately for SC2 VERSUS is still too rough around the edges for being anywhere near a Bnet killer, but it does give the users we have a very easy way to play matches on the ESL with a slightly more personal interaction with your opponent, and usually more serious players, so you can get reasonable matches without risking your ladder points. http://www.nationalesl.com/us/sc2/ui/versus/match/3080877seems like it was his first game, he just reported the win and logged off :/ Thanks for being honest and no-resulting, I've banned him, for what it's worth!

there are sometimes simply people who can't read... I have the feeling.... :D

Are you ok with people who worker rush and 6 pool every game?
|
^ Why wouldn't they be?
I don't see any notable league/organization banning cheesy tactics. In regards towards activity, I guess faster games net you better activity, but that's how it is.

They won't ask you if they can worker rush you. :D
The system is just silly. If you play for the beta keys the most efficient way to do is to worker rush. (I guess if you leave right away you get banned)
I just tried ESL's versus despite my first thoughts about it. Well it was like i expected. I would have lost my faith in humanity if there would have been macro games. I mean it would be just stupid...
I just wonder how you can not see that beforehand when you design the system. If you reward the ppl that play the most games it is kind of obvious that only ppl that exploit the system will get the keys. A macro game takes at least 10 times as much game time as a worker rush. Maybe ESL just wants to boost their numbers. That's like the only reason that comes to mind...

i have to agree with Orbital, 90% of the games are decided by who does the better cheese. hots beta keys should be handed by win rate because it is harder to earn than sheer numbers.
|
I'm sure all the masters would love that :'D
Its fun playing against 90% masters tho, you learn a lot ^_^

This is hilarious... I'm glad they banned you from Versus (For almost always submitting a win when he has lost) http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/player/versus/7100277/ http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/player/versus_unvalued/7100277/
I've played more then 30 games, almost all were masters and there was very little cheese... I haven't seen one player leave early either...
I find the 'versus' system quite good... It's easy to matchup with another player.. .that being said i think it's almost impossible to compete with the ingame ladder blizzard has.
Thanks to ESL for making this happen... just hope I get a key

That's fine if you enjoyed playing those games. If you want a beta key i don't think your chances are very good so. I am just saying that someone who worker rushed will have played ~300 games in the time you have played your 30 matches.

its not about balance, if you know someone is ONLY playing 6 pool, 2 off gates then for god sake exclude him, otherwise your whole advertising is going in the wrong direction

If there is statistics for total games played on ESL by default it will be free of any time limits. Now to make another statistics which will count games only from specific date it will require to make an algorithm. Since this is quite useless they can just not bother and take the base number.

well if they can find out did happen or not they can find this out too if the average time for win/loss report is just 5 min... well guess what the person is doing
and we have a report function too, so could just report those people and then they could check the person... i dunno, but that they did not put any rule against the abuse is just sad

Only matches since the contest began are counted of course, as using the past 2.5 years of results would be very bias towards the people who have played the last 2.5 years against the people playing for 7 days ^^

Ofcourse, because rewarding loyalty is crazy. Better to reward a guy that just plays for a few days to get his key and never visits ESL website again.

Search for 30 minutes, found a player. I win, he rages.
Record the win, but nothing shows up in my profile. Who knows what this guy did on his end to glitch, but super annoying system.

I am the same, over 30 games and less than 4 or 5 were full blown cheese. Most of the games were decent games lasting 15-20mins.
The biggest issue with esl is the lack of players.... in SEA most of the time you are lucky to have 1 or 2 people online and its not worth the 15min wait (or no game at all). NA has more, but only 20-30 on average so is also hard to find decent games with decent matchmaking ability. Ie more than likely just get matched with whoever is on... ie Plat vs Masters, which makes for a poor game but a good learning experience.
I think this has huge potential but esl need to:
1) Promote their site more to get a bigger player base (ie beta key giveaways is doing a good job so far); 2) Clean up the website to make it more user friendly. I know players that flat out refuse to use esl due to the website.
If this occurs (^^) then ESL will no doubt grow with time for each server. Thanks for the opportunity ESL, I will continue to use ESL as I do the in game ladder.
ToR Fighting!

It depends on how many people are playing from your country and how many games they have played.
94 games so far for me. I get the feeling I'm gonna need allot more.

So Blizzard actually supports a league/laddersystem that is a direct competitor of its own ladder? Somewhat odd actually...

So, people, watch out for Bashful too, he reports that he wins when he actually loses. http://www.nationalesl.com/us/sc2/ui/versus/match/3086784. Dunno how to further dispute this, and the one game doesn't really matter to me that much, but its the principle behind it that frustrates me. Player gets mad that he loses, fakes result... Sigh
He claims it was on the wrong map, however he was the one who hosted it. Hes bent because it didn't have the neutral supply depot at the bottom of the ramp, not my fault... And then when i search I just keep finding him, and when i refuse to play him again, he says hes reporting me ... sigh. This is why this ladder sucks.
Debating just withdrawing support from ESL products altogether ... this is stupid.

There is no competition... You need to BUY an SC2 account to do ether.. As long as blizzard get paid, I’m sure there fine with it. If anything it promotes the game which means more $$$ for them.

When will we find out who has won a Key? I understand the competition ends Thursday but when will the results be announced? also, how long after the results are announced will it take for the BETA to be awarded.
In short: When will the top 1000 be able to actually play in the beta?

While I don't exactly when the winners will gain access, I am relatively sure one'd have to wait a couple of days. I think an admin said that they have to submit the winners' battle.net email addresses to Blizzard and they will then manually activate beta access for the winners.

haha, yeah if you're Jam00dle on ESL you're probably fine, the next UK player I can find has only 49 games played :p
Not too convinced by the ESL algorithms by the way, it rewards the person with most wins regardless of winrate. If I'm favoured and I lose a game I never lose more than 10 points but I always gain more than 10 with a win. Prime example is the versus leader atm, <50% winrate but massively ahead of everyone else xD

I mean if we work on averages there are aroound 190-200 countrys depending on how you look at it.. so on average a country should get 5 Invites. but it wont work that way I'm sure because some countrys wont have 5 people playing SC2. (lol)

7 players is not too bad. Problem is maybe that also 0w-1l accounts are taken into account in the country distribution, meaning countries with 2 players and 100 games in total count less than 20 players with 20 games in total.
But I'm not sure if there are even 1000 players participating in this.

I didn't realise you could search like that.. Well i'm top in my country by 45 wins.. Guess I can sleep tonight! xD

This happens.... ESL lets you "Veto" it which basically lets you put together some evidence (screenshots / replay etc) and send it to them to review and award the rightful person the win and points. I believe a penalty is applied to your oppoenent and if there is history with him he will get banned.
I had this happen to me and vetoed it, got the win and points within 24hrs. My oppoent got negative 30 points for it. lol Every system has douch bags... dont let it get to you mate.

This doesnt count the vetos that ESL have already cleared. There were 2 addition veto in motion when i looked that are now cleared from the list. ESL on his case.... rofl!

You have 30 seconds to correct your results after you submit it the first time? Unless you saw you entered the wrong result afterwards of course, you'd be able to change it.

wouldn't worry about being in a country with too few players. didn't therogue or what he was called say in this thread that they wanna spread out at least one key per country? or am i just imagining things.

I just checked my "desputed matches" thing on my profile.
apparently some guy who I player 10-15 times in a row last night has disputed almost every game claiming that they were ether never played or that it was a draw or he won.
I beat him almost every time.. like 90% of the games we played. How do I get this retard banned? I was a fan of ESL untill now.. But If people who lose can just place a false result.. fuck it, i'm out.

Only way is to veto each game I believe. What a dick move by your opponent. The whole veto process takes a bit of effort.... not sure how they could make this better.

I think instead of just giving 1 key to every country ESL should just withhold a portion of keys to reward SOME active players whos countries didnt get enough active players to get a key. For example if someone from Trinidad and Tobago plays one game I dont think they should be given a key straight away (there are ways to cheat the IP). On the other hand by current system two very active players from one country wont get keys both (if they are the only ones). Further more there are other ways of cheating the system. Say we have those 2 active players from one country. If both of them makes smurfs and just plays 1 game they can easily get the number of active players from their country to 10 and guarantee themselves keys even if they are barely active.
For example the improved system can look like the following: Introduce a limit of games which will count a player as active but dont announce it (the limit I mean). 900 keys are distributed by country activity. 100 keys are distributed among players who still have no keys but have most games (no matter what country they are in)
P.S. I'm done fighting with you, mb you can use some feedback.

I haven't logged on to use the system yet, but it would be awesome if you guys could make a BO3 matchmaking system. It is one of the main faults of the b.net matchmaking and I think it could be a real draw to get people to use your system.

Either Veto each map adding the replays inside the veto or open a support ticket (http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/support/) including the replays and each VS match.
Any players abusing the VS system to enter fake result will be banned.

Don't spread false information. It is a legal and acceptable tactic to cheese according to ESL representatives. Unless you are intentionally trying to lose, you can do anything you want.

Quote or it didn't happen.

While I understand the idea of this promotion is to encourage people to use ESL it's really not working all that well, and it results in a pretty not fun experience. It's not fun to play even if all you have to do is play games, if all that you do is get matched against people severely above your skill level because of the pool of players.
I could cheese my way ever game, or just do something stupid but that isn't very fun either. So what motivation does a person have to play on this, if it's a horrible experience where you just get manhandled or you can cheese.
I wish this idea could have worked, but no beta key is worth the hassle of trying to find someone you can actually play against without getting completely destroyed.
I wish you the best in your future idea however.

Yeah, but e.g. the USA ones seem to be legit, so I guess its 770 over all 3 regions.
Maybe just someone from NA can answer if their ladder is also full of Germans in the first places. If so, it's a united ladder.
Update: Yeah, the Americans in the ladder face other Americans, so it's 770 for all regions.

ok i just got number 2 cuz a guy dunno how magicaly managed to play 50 games in 1 day , and has premium account = has more points then me aswel . i guess i wont recive beta right ?
btw is it done guys ? or we still have this day ? we have 11 more hours or is done ?

Will people that rage and put the wrong result be excluded from beta keys?

do we still have today to play or it ended alredy ?

I've had several opponents report the wrong match result, is there a system for getting those games fixed?

I'm not sure but good luck sir. My pet peeve is when people drop out of the matchfinder after waiting through it for serveral minutes.. sadface.
Nice hold btw <3
|
so much hate in versus T_T guys with smurf accs. getting called a hacker very game. getting rushed in the other games. awesome :D
|
THe games i actually played were with really nice ppl lol
|
I've almost exclusively played with very nice and mannered people! Very good experience thus far! =)
|
I have played nothing but ESL since the beta announcement. I dont mind it at all other than the lack of players. Hard to be matched up with similar ranked players with so few online.
But I dont mind playing high masters.... is an experience to say the least!
|
@ ESL
If we are lucky enought to get a beta... when will they be given out?
|
System is quite good actually, most of the people GG, unlike in ladder, more friendly guys here
|
so where can we see who has won? or are you just activating those accounts later?
|
Yeah I've found the games to be quite awesome, even if some people are way better than me TT Think I'll keep using it ongoingly

When does the time period run out? Also will the Keys be given out immediately or after a day or so?
|

I was wondering that too, It says on the website that it ends on October 4th, but that's all it says.

This is also what I assume, that they will toss out the key's when the next wave hits. Goodluck everyone.

ESL versus was annoying at first, but after a couple days I've started to warm up to it.
It's fun playing on a new ladder. I wish U.S. had access to all the other stuff that EU has. Regular tournies give some good entertainment. We just need more people playing on US.
|
did anyone get an e-mail so far?
|
|
Has anyone received an email yet?
|
4th of October isn't over, why should anyone have received an email yet.
|
There are about two and a half hours left in October 4th based off of ESLs default time (CEST).
|
|
Grats, i'm pretty stoked myself as well, I'm like 30 games ahead of the second guy in US..
|
anyone know when the players will revieve their keys ?
|
On October 05 2012 05:39 NexCa wrote: anyone know when the players will revieve their keys ?
From everything we know, the actual keys will probably be given out on the next wave of invites. Although you might get an email today for your Battlenet account or something. This is all guesswork though.
|
I am on EU but I got matched with someone from NA, weird.
|
Ive been trying to play on SEA but no one seems to be on in the last 3 days.
I was in queue for over 50 minutes and I gave up looking.

So about those beta keys...?

It is not yet morning time in Europe, they will take care of this during the day.
|
7 am in Europe atm, so gonna be a few hours before they start to look who qualified. Then they will mail you asking for your battle.net e-mail. This is send to blizzard and they send out the keys. Last part can take a while, depending on when blizzard wants more people in the beta.
|
since there are only about 881 people ranked, does that mean pretty much all these will get beta keys?
|
Dont forget tournaments. But it is also my guess that people with 20 games or so get 1.

I'm waiting to get some information on the situation :/

Well that sounds pretty good imo, especially: "We think almost everyone will get an invite anyway!" .
|
Looks good! Thanks ESL :D
|
To make sure it is clear: We do not have keys. We must collect Battle.net email addresses from the winners, and give them to Blizzard. Then Blizzard adds them to the next wave.
At least everyone that played more than one match, or is from a rare country, and has not abused the system by country faking, faking matches etc has won an invite
We are still working through the list of players, to look for suspicious activity, and closing vetos/support tickets etc.
Everyone that has won, will be emailed later today, to be asked for their Battle.net email address. Everyone that submits their email address by early Monday (CEST) will be given to Blizzard on Monday. After that, it is up to Blizzard's system when you will be invited. As far as we know, this only happens in waves on Friday.

i have a big question: the last 4 days, i tried to get a versus match in SEA server, and after 1hr of queue, it restarts over again.
4 days on SEA and I had 0 player to play against (i've queued over 12 hours on SEA total)
that automatically guarantees me not getting a beta on SEA, right?
|
Of course if you didnt play at all... How are you going to get key, if no matches are recorded?
Well, i'll have to wait one week for my key, it's sad, but atleast i'll probably get a key, awesome :D

Will we be recieving confirmation emails from ESL to confirm that our emails have been submitted correctly?

So again, lets say I make a brand new bnet account because I already have beta on mine, can I use that new one for beta even though it has no WoL on it? This way I could let me friends play on that one and we could play together.

On the other hand I dont see why would you need the link to ESL account. If you want to see if the player had some games it can easily faked by linking someone elses account. In that case one single account will show up twice or even more and you will have to check the actual email of the account to see which email is valid. This is very time consuming and can make the process last for the whole week. Instead of looking at the ESL accounts you should just pile up a list of valid emails of esl accounts who won the beta key and check if the responding email came from that list. But you will also need to make notes in that list to remove the emails that already got keys to prevent some people from getting many by submitting multiple emails. Also I believe this process can be easily automatized. You should talk to some programmers at ESL if you have any.

An easier way would of been to just add an additional text box in a players profile under their battle.net nick/#number and just have it for their email address.. Have that link to the players database, run an SQL query on Monday to pull them all off in a suitable format to send to blizzard. Easy. Then again I’m guessing that adding this feature just for a few beta keys is a bit redundant.

I win!!!!!! Thanks esl can't wait to start playing Hots. While the website was a nightmare to navigate through, I did like the games I got to play (once I figured it out), tended to be a slightly higher level than i normally get on the ladder.

nope, only 1 but that wasn't part of the "top 1000 most active players" thing...

VERSUS does not rank by activity but by points. So if you're top 1000 in the VS. ranking you're not guaranteed one of the top 1000 active players, plus the 1000 most active was globally which means you have to be like one of the top 50 of the US (don't know how the keys are split). So if 1000 players (globally) made 2 games, they were more active than you were

I put in allot of effort and time to get over 100 games for this beta. Seeing that people who only played 2 games not get in pleases my dark side!

ye i played as well more than 100 games, but just be happy that you got what you played for

I know, but there are only 895 people who are in the actual versus, so where are the 1000 keys going to? There's many many who played 1 game, did they not get keys? And if so, i'm wondering if they'll give the rest of the 1000 keys in some other competition or such.

Well to be blunt that's really not my problem or fault that ESL wasn't more active, if they were given 1000 keys to give away to the 1000 most active, and they change it to players with 1 or more games after the competition is over... they're not following up on what they said then.

There are more leagues in the ESL other than versus which should account to more than 1000 invites. They did not change anything. Its just that if you played two or more games you would have been between the top 1000 actives (it was very easy to get top 1000 because there are a lot of 0w-1l accounts) and if you played only one game you probably didn't hit the top 1000 actives (don't know how they resolve stalemates).

Thanks a lot for the opportunity to get a beta key ;-)
While we're at it there were a lot of people playing so using the web site and the interface (maybe this deserves another thread).
As mentioned also in previous posts the web site and interface are really not easy to use. It would be nice if you could go to other countries sites from the main EU or NA site for example. The whole experience of having some things on one site and others at the other, for example there is no SC2 on the NA site, is very confusing. During the matchmaking I kept getting errors, and then the window would refresh or open another window and the match-searching would start. It is also difficult to find information like the SC2 ranking from the NA site. Some maps in the map-pool (some GSL and ESL ones) were not easily available from the SC2 interface, resulting in simply having to play other maps.
Overall it was really fun to play, but it would be great if you could make the site and user interface a bit more intuitive.
Thanks again, and keep up the good work !!

I'd like to thank ESL for giving a lot of players a chance to get into the beta. If some of the staff is reading this, then you're awesome guys. I have played around 16 games in VERSUS and 4 games in A-Series, so it's not that much, but my country is kinda small, so it was easier for me. Thanks again for giving me an opportunity.

It would be, but I guess there were actually just that many people who were playing in the other ESL events that the many many who only played 1 game weren't active enough ^^
Also @baldgye, i already said there is only 895 on the ladder, out of 1000. That's why I was asking.

So if 1000 players (globally) made 2 games, they were more active than you were I know, but there are only 895 people who are in the actual versus, so where are the 1000 keys going to? There's many many who played 1 game, did they not get keys? And if so, i'm wondering if they'll give the rest of the 1000 keys in some other competition or such. but I'm pretty sure there where more than one ladder... and even if they did have a secret threash hold of number of games needed to qualify and that turned out to be more than one, then I'm glad! it means that people who put the effort it got rewarded and the people who just tried to cheat the system by doing as little as possible didn't get rewarded, becasue if they had said you need to play at least 2 games, you would have played those two and no more...

Woop got it. Worth playing those 100 games mostly vs noobies And for those who played less than 5 games and expected invite, I think other servers are also included so there is no way that the esl.eu/eu versus is the only versus that gets keys.

I understand where you're coming from but that would be completely unfair. Imagine if the secret threshold was actually 3 games then. What if I played 2? What if it was 4, but I played 3? That is not fair, and if there is a secret threshold, it means the ones giving the keys away are lying. It's not a question of right or wrong, it's simply lying.
There is no cheating the system. If they had a secret requirement, they are the ones cheating you. If they say you only need to be the top 1000 most active, and you are the top 1000 most active, it doesn't matter how many games you played. You made the requirement. What's the point in giving out the requirements to win something if the requirements themselves aren't even true or reliable? What kind of world would we live in then? What if they said you need to play at least 2 games, but then there was a secret threshold of 3 games, because they fault that 2 was "cheating the system".
Does that make any sense?

It's completly fair becasue the whole point of the competition is for people to use there league, one or two games is hardly using. If the threash hold was public knoledge then instead of playing as much as possible and really pushing the system and being forced to play as much as you could you actually get an idea of what the service it is they are offering.
Cheating the system is what you tried to do and failed to do.

Either that or they pinged you for some kind of cheating.

Yes got it today (from blizz, not esl) !! I've been playing a decent amount but not a ton. Maybe 50 ladder games in the past 2-3 weeks? But a lot of practicing builds vs AI...

I got my beta key, I only played roughly 7 games. went 5-2 with one draw. Edit: I got 3 emails from ESL saying i have to email blizzard etc etc.Couple hours later i got the invite from blizzard, do i still have to send my email in with the esl link still?

Got my email, roughly 20 games. finished top 15ish in US versus ladder.

@ ESL
Does it matter whether I have replyed using my ESL email or my battlenet email?
Turns out Microsoft Outlook Automatically chose my main email account when I clicked on the link to reply to you. I was just making sure that you dont look at it and wonder why there is a reply from an email other that the one you sent yours to.... I could always email you via my esl email as well just in case.
After playing 50 games and coming in 1st in SEA I dont want to miss out on my hard earned beta.

i was playing on na but the email is a .eu. does this mean that i will need an eu client to play? or does it not matter and i will get my inviite next friday?

How do you know that is the "whole point"? That is your opinion.
1 or 2 games is not using the league? You played 1 or 2 games, thus you did indeed use the league.

I have a policy. I never do any contests for Beta Keys. Period. The fact that organizations get thousands of them to market always frustrated me. Seriously, you're saying I have to compete to be a free QA tester for Blizzard? Even though I've been a loyal fan for over a decade?
Don't get me wrong, it makes perfect sense for Blizzard, and it makes perfect sense for the companies giving out the keys. Also, I really do want to play the Beta. But for the reasons above, trying to win a Beta keys always made jealous, angry, and unhappy. So even for the SC2 WOL Beta, I didn't even attempt to get a key.
Just play WOL and wait to get invited by Blizzard. Thankfully, I got mine today. But after messing around with the new units, I think I'll probably just keep playing WOL until the final product is released.
|
So I guess some people got their keys today and some will get them next week?
|
I'm happy that i won a beta key, but i'm sad that everyone just quit playing on versus
|
If you got invite by Blizzard it's not from ESL "giveaway".
ESL are sending the infomation to blizzard on Monday.
If you now have HotS you have been randomly selected from blizzard.

Thanks ESL. I played like 3 games and got one
Oh yeah, just noticed that the ESL email says I need to do extra stuff that I haven't done to activate it. Guess it was just a coincidence that I got ESL Success email and Blizzard Success email at the same time.

Of course there was some kind of a "secret" threshold, but it was also a secret for the ESL since the invites are split to the most 1000 countries proportionately and no one could have predicted from the beginning how many players of each country are going to play, which means there was a "secret" threshold for every single country, which turned out to be like 5+ for countries like Germany, US, Poland etc. and like 2+ for South Africa, Denmark, Netherlands etc. (dont know the exact numbers, just an assumption)

If anyone got cheated here its the thousands of active players on battle net who play more than a hundred games monthly and still get no key.

Imo you are just all underestimating to amount of players that didnt play versus at all but had some games because they played cups and so on.
esl europe hosts daily cups with ~ 25 - 50 players each and there are some national cups and ladders aswell.

You misunderstand me. I know it's not the top 1000. Also, I am not criticizing ESL. Please read my previous posts, I think you'll understand. He is saying that, if there WAS a secret threshold, he would like that. I am saying a secret threshold would mean they are cheating you. And by secret threshold, I do not mean the way they split up the keys by region (in which they don't say exactly how that will be split up), but that there is an EXTRA hidden requirement that you must fulfill to win a key (at least X games, even if you ARE top 1000 active).
Also your argument is very sentimental. If let's say I played 10 games, and someone busted their ass to play 100 games. We both get keys. Is it my fault that they busted their ass? What, is that not their decision to play that many games? How is that cheating anything?
@M0RE
Yes, I understand that, but I'm not arguing nor criticizing that. I am talking about a secret threshold theorized by the one I was arguing against such that there is an additional, hidden requirement, of which he would have liked ESL to not disclose.

Did you make two ESL games or more? nope, only 1 but that wasn't part of the "top 1000 most active players" thing... VERSUS does not rank by activity but by points. So if you're top 1000 in the VS. ranking you're not guaranteed one of the top 1000 active players, plus the 1000 most active was globally which means you have to be like one of the top 50 of the US (don't know how the keys are split). On October 06 2012 03:43 baldgye wrote:Show nested quote +On October 06 2012 03:11 Yoshi Kirishima wrote:On October 06 2012 03:10 SinCitta wrote:On October 06 2012 03:00 Yoshi Kirishima wrote:I'm in the top 1000 but no invite? what will happen to the rest of what's left of the 1000 invites? Did you make two ESL games or more? nope, only 1 but that wasn't part of the "top 1000 most active players" thing... how can you be sad if you only played a single game? Well to be blunt that's really not my problem or fault that ESL wasn't more active, if they were given 1000 keys to give away to the 1000 most active, and they change it to players with 1 or more games after the competition is over... they're not following up on what they said then. we know its bad and wasn't good and took forever to find games, becasue we played like 50+ plus games of it... and I'm guessing if you didn't get a key then you wern't in the top most active with your baller total of 1+ game... becasue I imagine they have more than 1k people in total who put in more than one game But what about all those players who put in 0 effort and still expect a beta key for the 1-2 games.. Isn't this somehow discriminating against the lazy? It would be, but I guess there were actually just that many people who were playing in the other ESL events that the many many who only played 1 game weren't active enough ^^ Also @baldgye, i already said there is only 895 on the ladder, out of 1000. That's why I was asking. but I'm pretty sure there where more than one ladder... and even if they did have a secret threash hold of number of games needed to qualify and that turned out to be more than one, then I'm glad! it means that people who put the effort it got rewarded and the people who just tried to cheat the system by doing as little as possible didn't get rewarded, becasue if they had said you need to play at least 2 games, you would have played those two and no more... Not trying to be mean but they rewarded people who tried out there league and site and ignoored the people who tried to cheese the system for a free key... good for them I understand where you're coming from but that would be completely unfair. Your argument doesn't address what I said at all o.o it is still lying then, and thus they cheat you. If someone says that you must do X to do Y, and you do X, and they do not give Y, you cheated them? sure... How do you know that is the "whole point"? That is your opinion. 1 or 2 games is not using the league? You played 1 or 2 games, thus you did indeed use the league. Stop this already. 1) They never said how many games exactly you need to play to get the key. 2) There is no checking how many actually active players there are on ESL because of numerous events and leagues and cups. 3) They said they would reward players from lesser scenes to promote their development, USA is not one of them. 4) Whining because you didnt get a key with 1 game played is just pathetic. If anyone got cheated here its the thousands of active players on battle net who play more than a hundred games monthly and still get no key.
You also misunderstand me. Please read the actual argument. I am not whining for a key. I think it's really disrespectful and pathetic of yourself or others people to post with such hate and disgust without actually reading thoroughly. Also, whether or not Blizzard wants to give players keys based on Bnet activity or through ESL activity is up to them, or ESL.

OK, I can assure you (and anyone else) that there was no hidden requirement to get a key. It just turned out that you needed X games (X varied for each country) to get a key. The only "requirement" was that you did no fake matches, which means "poke a friend, open a game, close it within a minute", or "create a new account, chose a country with very less players and play 1+ match" (which made admin work pretty horrible the last days), those people were sorted out, no matter if or how many legit games there were. And someone who played 10 games compared to someone who played 100+ games was by no means cheating the system, it's just the way it turned out. To be honest, I wonder how many players complain about getting no key although they used fake matches or fake accounts to get a key and were busted but don't know it yet

Downloaded the beta client. Now we wait...

I didn't got a key, I didn't plan to complain or anything, but now I'm curious, there are only two player from Mexico, me and another guy who played 12 games, I played 11, I assumed, that there was only one key for mexico, but now I want to make sure that I didn't got placed with the people that abused the sistem, because I didn't. I know I didn't played that much, but still, I would like to be sure that at least it wasn't because somebody thought that I abused the sistem.

And it wasn't actually that hard to see how many people, total, qualified for a key:
mysc2info.appspot.com
I wrote this webapp to count the players who had valid games played during the contest period, and then calculate out how many games were required if the minimum ever went over 1. It didn't. I'm guessing there are a bunch of people who thought they were being clever by making fake accounts to get multiple beta keys, but Blizzard is pretty strictly not letting keys go on Ebay or other open markets like has been the case in previous betas.
I'm guessing, when you hear complaints about people sitting in queue for 12 hours and not getting a game, that's where the 'obscure country' caveat is coming from, as obviously there are keys to go around.

There was no secret threshold; I divided the number of players per country by the total number of players = X, the top X from each country won an invite. (= the invites are distributed by the number from each country, and given to the most active players from each country)
We did not say play X matches and you win a key because then 99% of people would have only played X matches and left, which is not what we wanted.
When I said earlier that at least (there were some with 1) everyone with at least 2 matches that didn't abuse the system, that was at the time the easy way of letting 99% of people know whether or not they had won before I had finished checking the list and sending the emails (the only definitive list was the people who were mailed)
Though I was mistaken at that time; not everyone with 2 matches got in, I'm sorry for that. There are still a lot of unclaimed invites, so we will be reminding those players, and then anyone still unclaimed by the end of the week we will see about distributing to the next most active players.

Come on, I think they should be given out based on skill, first waves masters next diamonds and ect. How does this not make sense?

On October 09 2012 03:56 TheLunatic wrote: Come on, I think they should be given out based on skill, first waves masters next diamonds and ect. How does this not make sense? I think it is one of the Blizzard's requirements NOT to distribute keys based on skill since they want skill diversity in beta. Thus ESL has no choice here and the whole debate (should beta keys be distributed by skill) does not belong to this thread.

Seems to be alot of people not happy with this or that... but all this aside, I would like to thank th3rouge and ESL for their effort to date. I for one am thankful that you have given us the chance at a beta and also had some fun in the process doing it.
