We’d like to let all of our StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty beta test participants know that the first phase of the beta test will be coming to an end in all regions on Monday, May 31. The beta test will be unavailable for several weeks while we make some hardware and software configuration changes in preparation for the final phase of the beta test and the release of the game. We plan to bring the beta test back online for a couple of weeks prior to the game’s launch to complete our testing. We’ll have more details to share about when this final beta-testing phase will begin at a later date.
We’d like to thank all of our beta-test participants for your enthusiasm, dedication, and valuable feedback during the beta test, and we look forward to hearing more of your thoughts on the StarCraft II beta test as the game’s July 27 launch approaches.

Bad topic title. It is going down for a few weeks the being brought back up.
Edit: Topic should be Phase one of beta ends May 31st. Or something along those lines.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I will only be able to play for 5 days T_T

change title to "Beta hiatus May 31st." please
|
Can't change the title so a mod will have to do it.
I won't be able to play in July so beta ends for me on the 31st. Balls.

couldn't care less

NOOOOOOOO!!! WHY IS LIFE SO CRUELLLL!?!??!?!?
|
Well that means we're going to get some tournament action on steroids those last few days! Unless they're going to put them on hold during the hiatus...
|
Blizz, I am disappoint.
Oh well, hopefully the beta won't be down for TOO long.
|
Will anyone start playing BW again while the beta is down?
|
Hey guys! Let's play Broodwar! Msg me for game!
|
Wow, this is brutal!
|
they gotta add some more decals, portraits, and stuff too
|
well... that sucks, so may 31st then say 2 or 3 weeks off it comes back online around june 25th (guess between 2 and 3 weeks) out for maybe 2 to 3 more weeks before it goes offline again before game comes out. That gives somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks of beta time left to play start mass gaming now
|
This is a big relief for me in many ways...I can finally get back to focus completely on other things.
|
Well, that's good news since i'll be out of the country anyway No catching up to do when I come back! YAY

So what does this mean for map makers? Will we still be able to use the editor while the beta is down?
|
oh god i hope this means blizzard is doing mass patching within the next 2 weeks, either that or the downtime is a giant patch since they said beta IS coming back a few weeks before retail.
|
The mapmaker will be useable, i bet you anything they are taking it down so people make maps for a few weeks so once its back up and they have custom map hosting, it'll be all good ^^

rofl woulda been nice to know this some time ago..... sigh

Surely there will be some kind of private server system? For many the summer holidays are starting just about there and it'd be a shame if we were not able to spend the hot, sunny days inside practicing SC2..
..It's going to be a god damn pain if there's no private server available at that time. I wonder what IdrA and other Korean progamers are going to do during that time.
I would really really be interested in knowing how far the server emulation has gone with SC2, is it at all realistic to expect there to be an alternative way to play multiplayer after the official beta ends?
|
Doesn't this totally fuck up the Arizona training camp?

Next news: ICCUP season starts may 30th? :p

I've heard that the server emulation has pretty much come to a stop and they have failed. I think its mainly due to the fact they all got beta keys and were playing sc2 though.
|
mothership...immortal... murader...and they are ending the beta....
|
Let's hope they will add new maps and 3v3/4v4 when the beta restarts.

I'm going to be so bored during the downtime.

Maybe they need the extra weeks to completely fix zerg, and maybe give it a buff or two ( but thats doubtful)
|
"Several weeks".... isn't that like 6 months in Blizzard time? What's going on here?!?

At least we'll be able to play single player custom maps... harharhar.

I know that you can test maps without logging on to Bnet, but if SC2 needs a connection to Bnet just to be able to run and test the maps, that will not be good. (Even if the editor continues to work, having a map editor without the ability to test maps is useless for custom, non-melee map creation. =/ )
At least we can hopefully look forward to the ability to play custom map games on Bnet (without needing everyone to run some 3rd party program).

Horrible news.

They should atleast keep the client usable so we can go over replays etc.

I'm more concerned about how imbalanced this shit still is. Zerg's nerfs and lack of units is just terrible.

apparently, from a user on the battlenet forum http://forums.battle.net/thread.html?topicId=24915043027&sid=5000&pageNo=3 :
YES YOU CAN.
Disable net connection now, fire up editor, test map, Have fun...
Unless they release a patch soon that will disable the editor. However YOU CAN BE OFFLINE, regardless of their servers with this build.
|
I acutally like where this is going. The game is actually coming rather than being delayed And let's hope most balance issues have been solved. Or at least hope that the balance has been improved when the game releases.

Ahhhh damn Whyyyy((( I have nothing planned for June then I leave July for the entire month.... Blahhhhhhhh. Back to BW its gona hurt my eyes so bad going from beautiful blonde skinny mini skirt sc2 to 250 pound sweat pant cottage cheese ass ugly SC1 Graphics.

Cherish the moment as a means to improve your sc:bw skills.
It was fun whilst it lasted.

No other game needs a hiatus between beta and launch.. hon didnt.. even C&C games dont do this bs.. I dont get why its so hard to make changes while people still play the old version

Maybe because they are preparing their billion servers for launch, localisation and shit...
|
Well, they obviously have more than the right to do this, and better to do it now than when the game is launched so I can't blame them, but nevertheless it does suck. Hopefully it won't be down too long. gg

awesome so it ends right after my finals

I guess that means back to BW for 3-5 glorious weeks.
I hope iCCup doesn't go down in that time, or i'll have to play D2

Don't compare SC with C&C. Ever.
On a more serious note, I'm sure Blizzard knows what they're doing. I'd say it's better if they make all the preparations they think is needed, and then release an awesome game, as always. Sure, it's sad that we will be without SC2 for a couple of weeks, but if you think about the time we had to wait for the BETA, this is nothing.

The game is getting closer. I'm just going to get more and more excited, and probably just mess around in older games for the time SC2 is down.

That sucks. I was planning to play a lot after my finals are finished next week. And I just got into the beta last week. Didn't play much last week because I was studying. So technically, I only have one real week with the beta. Great...
|
This news made me so sad. Ruined my day . I hope they put it back on the last month before release at least :\
|
"several weeks" = what?!
a month?
|
Hopefully this means they'll be doing an overhaul to make zerg less boring. Too bad they're probably just going to upgrade their servers so they don't start on fire at release.

Yeah. With all that downtime, I am curious to see what the game will look like when they bring it back up a couple weeks before release for us to test.
|
Browder said it woudl take at lesat a couple weeks to switch over, which in my opinion means 3-5 weeks lol, so thats probably how long it'll be til the "second phase" if that.

They mean in terms of Battle.net and stuff. They were not using the same servers they plan to use for release. They were just using old WoW servers. Probably not the proper server software either. But no, this doesn't mean the system requirements will change.

As far as hardware software I imagine they will just be optimizing things, perhaps putting in AA etc
This will suck, my work slows down right after May for a few months so I was looking forward to more practice in between disc golf sessions out in the sun =\
Ah well, free beta game time is still cool so I can't complain.

so umm.. does this mean the game will come out before july 27th?? T_T

|
"several" usually means 4, so I'd guess all of June sans beta, probably 2nd phase starting after the 4th of July holiday up to release.
|
|
So much for the game being well balanced for the release. I'll probably just wait for the full release if it's not back until july.

What? I agree that a couple is generally recognized as 2, but this definition of several has somehow eluded me.
Regardless, isn't it a little uncharacteristic of blizzard to leave a beta running up until launch? Have they done this before? Although, I suppose they haven't done a hiatus like this before either.

but still, none of the marauders' stats makes much sense... - it has 1 more range than marines, yet it comes with 1 native armor. this was ok for the melee-firebat, but now it's just bawwww. better give it to the hellion. - it has stim yet still "relies" on concussive shells. - it has the armored attribute, although i can see why that's necessary for immos to counter them. i'll probably find more once i'd focus my mind on it -.- *cheers*burp*

Nope, Blizzard took legal action against all teams that was working on it.

Tragically good timing by Blizzard. Now I can graduate

I'm also seeing this as perfect timing. I'm out two weeks in June due to work trip and coverage of Devastation 2010. May 31st is gonna be a horrible day tho

nooo! i cant wait for starcraft 2 to be released !!!
|
I am going to guess 2nd phase of beta will be some kind of Server capacity test, to set things up to be able to deal with the amount of people playing after the release. Following this guess, I suppose lots of people still waiting for a beta key will get it.
On the other side, this phase will be very close to release, so if they realize the servers are not holding, there won't be much time to fix it.
Well, we shall wait and see...

Piratebay case is a bit different than this one... As this (bnet) is about intellectual property (cant find better words atm), and then breaking directly against DMCA and other stuffs.

Their timing just seems to be impeccable... maybe should just return to BW for a while. Hope they give us a few more weeks to play in June/July...

Also: As long as the server isn't based in the US, any and all private server shennanigans will be illegal, yet un-enforcable. Just wait for those crazy Danes to hack the server since hacking isn't illegal over there, then they'll make the Blizz Server protocol open source, then someone will plant a server on the canadian side of the border, or the mexican side of the border. Then provide the instructions from that nonlocal ISP.
As long as the server doesn't provide any actionable service to Canada, the Server is in this "gray zone" where it can be used as an illegal private server, and blizz has 0 controll over the servers existance.
Today's offshore poker servers and the UIEGA are a prime example of the US not being able to action against anything that's blatantly illegal. They couldn't attack the servers themselves, so they just make cashing the paycheck illegal, or giving them money illegal. Private servers will want neither of these two things from us. So we're good... just gotta wait.

my god, I just played bw during the sc2 server down time. It was horrible. I was playing hunter for fun, I was honestly confused for like 15 minutes why there was only 1 gas at each base, I was constantly pressing V instead of O for overlord, I forgot to send the drones to the minerals basically every time they spawned after the first 2 minutes... It took a while to send my whole army cause I was so used to just packing them in all one control group. Jesus I played worse than a D- player I seriously got 10 times worse compared to if I had just not played bw at all, which used to happen often enough

couple is not "generally recognized as 2." it IS 2.

I think you're overreacting. It's not like we didn't know it was a beta. I think everyone expected for there to be some interim period between the beta and the actual release.
|
On May 18 2010 07:19 duckett wrote: isnt this just like shitting on all the 3rd party tournaments and streaming that we have going that gets like thousands of viewers?
I think it's an inherent risk in running tournaments during the Beta stage of a game. I'm sure they'll come back once the game is actually released.
|
Good thing we will still be able to play customs :D

That's why it's BETA

I have already voiced my fears about large maps and the gamebreaking impact of the Nydus / Warp-Gate mechanics in several posts here. With the end of beta in less than two weeks I have this fear increased, because there are no really large maps out yet which should have come out for 3v3 and 4v4 matches. Even if they added the mechanics now there would hardly be enough time left to test the maps and balancing.
As always I hope I am wrong, but fear that I am not ... since this feels like Blizzard is "chickening out" of giving us larger maps.
|
interesting to see when it gets back up again and what the final changes will be. too bad though no sc2 for the majority of june. you will be missed, beta!

awesome! Beta closes 2 days after my last exam...fml

I mean, I'm sad that it's going down, but it's literally one week before my finals, which is pretty damn good timing.
|
Didn't the Gamestop receipts state that the key would expire on May 31st?
|
well, im sure most of us have put more hours into this free beta the total amount of hours of games we bought games this year.. lol i know i have.
|
They dont expire... phase 1 will end on May 31st. They can still play in phase 2.
Also, beta keys will eventually expire when the game itself is released.
|
Damn I'ma be so bored for a month. D:
|
|
If your life depends on beta... that's just sad.
Anyways, good to hear that beta is going to go offline for few weeks. Hopefully they make a lot of improvements during this time, including balances =)
|
Lol. Im getting my new comp up at around the same time.
|
Hopefully it will fix the heavily malfunctioning software
|
I am so sad.
|
at least they told us in advance
just imagine if TLI or HH got to the finals than the beta just stopped, hahaha
|
Why are so many of you crying over the beta going offline? It's a good thing damnit!
|
It is ok in my book, eather way I was playing way to much lately so I could use a break. But I was hoping Blizz would really try to fix Zerg boredom, nerf Mauraders, Void Rays ect ect and only way to do this is by community playing so they see how this affects balance. Seems they dont care much about mayor camplains.
|
There go the SC2 Tourney section lol
|
Do you think the system requirements will be changed or increased from the current list? I don't want to get everything for a new computer and find out its not good enough.
|
Back to BW then I guess (:
|
Played a fewgames back on BW, omg the pathing is retardedly frustrating if you aren't used to it, merely the timing on building my spawning pool was awful because hte drone got all caught up... on nohing... and was like 4 seconds late.

Yeah for a few weeks... then it's gone forever once SC2 gets back up and is released. A lot of the people here seem to word their posts like, "Oh my god, now people will play bw again, it's going to be just like it used to be again!" Sorry to say but it's not, so I wouldn't get too excited. Few weeks from now, BW (outside of Korea) will be just as dead again as it has been this last month or two. Only it'll be for the long term this time and when SC2 is released it's the final nail in the proverbial coffin. Time to join the herd and move on... BW had it's time and had a good run, but let it go, even Korea is going to eventually.
Anyways, "Several" weeks without SC2... that sucks. Well at least, maybe now I'll get some work done on my Jetski that I need to do before riding season really takes off up here in Montana. Of course though, once I have that work finished, SC2 will be back up in running, lol. ^.^

BW aint going to die, maybe for the first while. In ten years BW will probably be more popular than SC2. Its kind of like timeless classics, which BW is. SC2 is and will be popular but it still hasnt stood the test of time.

I hope this was meant sarcastically ... because Facebook does not improve the game itself and the missing chat channels are a bigger negative than the stupid facebook which is simply a no-cost advertising for Blizzard and SC2. All those kiddies addicted to "managing their contacts" in social networks dont notice how much time they waste with updating their page and reading through the stuff ... which could be spent in real life actually talking to others.
In case that wasnt clear: I absolutely hate social networks on the internet ... as if people couldnt do it without the internet, they are just educated to be lazy and then are unable to do it in real life anymore.

Well, we shall wait and see...
You're right, if the 'release servers' can't handle the stress of the open beta, they won't have much time to install new hardware in time for the release. I remember when WoW launched, the servers were swamped and it took them about a month to add new servers and get them running stable.

What did you do with Oversky and KHB how did Oversky get involved in all this? Oversky = inReach = War3 player iirc.
At the beginning of the beta, those three were dominating (esp. CowGoMoo, I miss him)

then oversky was like "omg i have to scout, GG"

just as a note, to "hack" the servers, and im sure this is no mean feat. But isnt all one needs to do somehow see the gamestate and send it over the network? I am a programmer, but I wouldnt know where to start to be reading the gamestate in memory. Also, Bnet is just a glorified chat room, couldnt we use the current method of spawning multiple players into a custom game as discussed in the turret defense 2010 thread, but over a lan or tunnel? This is PROBABLY all wrong, but a thought to get brains turning and someone much smarter than I will likely come up with an elegant way to do what I have no idea how to. I am however, willing to help if another hand is needed in the coding up once a plan is discovered.
Sitting back whining gets us nothing, we should instead try to figure out a way to IP/Lan with current hardware so we can continue to get our dose of cocaine, I mean SC2 in these coming dark times.

Does anyone know if it will be possible to access our saved replays when the servers go down? Since it is saved as a "document" on my computer it seems like I would be able to just run the file through SC2 without online capabilities, but I am not sure if they have the true file stored on a central server or something.
These few weeks off will be an excellent time to look over lots of replays and try to correct mistakes in time for the real deal!
EDIT: After initial testing (turning off the wireless and trying to watch a replay) it either crashed or said something about in correct mod data. Once the wireless was turned on, I didn't need to log in and the replay worked, but that connection might just be available through a portion which will later be removed. I guess it will be a bit of a surprise if it works once the servers are off.

None of you turbonerds remembered that World Cup in South Africa starts like first week of june? :d
|
I'm not sure I would consider the 11th within the first week of June.....

My guess is that you'll have to do the 'crack' thing people did a while ago in order to watch replays when they didn't have a beta key. If it worked then, I'm sure it'll still work now.

ugh, I'm always wary of underground fixes, but I can't imagine Blizzard will be too angry that we are clamoring to get at their game longer.

Close enough

damn i need to play more - must make my weekends free !!
|
I guess Incontrol's training camp is out the door

In reply to all those "cant be 3-4 weeks!!!" "they will delay beta phase" and stuff - i want u guys remember how it was in WoW, particually WoW EU that i took place in. Closed Beta (key req) phase last for like 4-5 months and than the Day X came (it was 22 Jan if i rem correctly) and there was huuge gap (3weeks+). Than again very short Open Beta phase and release soon after that. Timing is almost identical to current one. Well at least here in SC2 we can do some comp-stomp and UMS stuff meanwhile.
|
omg fuuuuuu i just got my beta key this month and was just placed in silver ytd-.-
|
So what is the point of the month break?
|
Good! I'll have more time for my exams now
|
awesome..beta end the last day of school.................
|
I foresee a lot of BGH games since every single bit of my skill is gone since SC2 is out.
|
I wonder what IdrA will be doing in the meantime since he is now dedicated to SC2 as a profession.

It'll be interesting to see what hardware/software changes they'll do. Shame to see the beta go but I've not really played it as much as I should of done. I'll get some decent games in over the next few weeks though. ^_^

WHY DOES IT END WHEN MY SCHOOL VIRTUALLY ENDS? T.T

It would be more amazing if every other post wasn't just some variation of, "THIS IS TEH SUX"
(but to be fair, this IS teh sux)

they might come back with the region locked servers.....i fear the aus/nz community plea of not being put with the asia servers has fallen on deaf ears....
we can get about 150-165~ms on WoW, so i doubt SC2 would be any different....
i am not even sure how our servers to asia will be better...from memory it's actually worse since the route to US is more 'direct' than asia...which is why anything in asia runs like poop for us.
|
Don't you see! Dustin is angry. Perhaps 1-800-Flowers and a nice card will get him to leave the beta running.
|
I am going to be lanning on may 31. Does this mean that that entire day the servers will be up?
Otherwise the lan is probably going out the window...
|
why is everyone so emo about this? take a break pplz TT
im kinda intressted to see what the 2nd phase will have to offer
|
man hard to believe this is going down, this is the time I wish blizz would give lan support.

thats so sad! hopefully the downtime is as short as possible :<
|
I will miss it, hope it goes live more weeks before release
|
Well, it's still beta for a reason. They're still trying to tweak the game for better balance. Hopefully, we'll see some useful changes after the downtime.
|
Im already playing SC1 more then SC2 so i don't mind a couple of weeks of downtime. I wonder what new beta content we will get after the downtime :O
Oh well, time to no-life Phantom games on Iccup

Its like the perfect USA day to have a lan party.

What are IdrA and those other Koreans living in semi-pro houses supposed to do now? I wonder if CJ will just let him take a month vacation or something lol.

how exactly are the showing that they dont care? This is a esential phase for them to release the game. I think that taking it down to finish the job shows that they do in fact care.

Not mine... My last exam is on the 28th of May. Now I'm battling between squeezing as much SC2 as possible before my finals and actually getting some studying done. :/
|
this sucks. i just bought my new pc and was hopin to play it. i have a few days before beta ends and then wait -.-

I don't mind too much. June is the WC month anyway, beta and WC would take up all of my time! And i still have to work too...
But I wonder what the point of this is. Can't think of too many things: - major overhaul based on data collected so far (unlikely, why all the balance changes then) - they're not satisfied with SC2 and will decide whether to cancel it (they better not!) - server localisation, next beta phase will feature the actual setup (with stress test)
I guess it's the last, anyone else got other ideas?

last option is the only one i can see being correct. they have put in too much time and effort already for it to be the first two

Such funky timing. Beta ends when my finals end and will most likely start back up when classes are in session again.
|
They should seriously re-think this
|
On May 23 2010 00:17 Wilko wrote: They should seriously re-think this
No they seriously should not. Every Beta Blizzard has run basically has been done in two phases, one long first phase, and then after about a month break and some heavy changes, a shorter second phase follows. This is the best way for them to implement a Beta test, and doing it this way will allow players to play almost up until actual release of retail. The two-phase (or even multi-phase) Beta is common not only to Blizzard but many other developers; I'm sure there is a good number of changes that require server-side changes and general overhaul that can not be accomplished in a simple patch.

A few weeks before summer vacation. Hopefully they will go back up when summer vacation begins.

after patch 13 id be all for closing it down now until they can fix thier servers

My warning in B.Net says it expires June 21, possibly a bug?

If you ask me they should shut down beta 1st phase NOW and work on the issues and start 2nd phase asap.

It's not really a bug, its just a placeholder text

I think Blizzard should use the patch 12 version and work from there with implementing features that players have been requesting. I can understand that they will want to avoid LAN because of piracy but there is really no reason for removing chatrooms. The identificator System was also better than the current one.
Same goes for ultra buff/nerf which only managed to make the unit even worse...
|
I think they should shut down the servers today or apply some kind of hotfix. This patch 13 beta is just making everything worse. Ppl wont stop complaining.
|
do they say anywhere when they'll open up the second phase of the beta? and if having a beta key for phase 1 lets you play phase 2?? cause that would irritate me quite a bit if i needed a seperate key for beta phase 2.
