Cheese is essentially anything that is not considered "orthodox play." By virtue of not being orthodox it usually enjoys/relies the tactical benefit of surprise. Most of the time when a one refers to a play as "cheese" or "all-in," they are simply saying, "my goodness that play is obnoxious to the point of being infuriating." imo, there is no point in defining it. It is one of those terms you should probably just avoid, much like the term all-in. Using, obsessing, or attempting to define either term is not going to help you win games.

6pool, hope I don't get scouted first. 14 nexus, hope he isn't roach rushing/2raxing Proxy anything, hope he didn't make antiair/detection/scout it/went early pool or gate or rax. For builds like 3gate sentry expand its more like, if I control properly and fend him off I'm way ahead, but if we trade armies then we're about even

I come from a GO background and there îs "cheese" in GO aswell.. It has the name "hamete" or "trick-play" and îs defined by a move that has many good-looking answers, but all of them lead to disasturous (sp?) possitions.. This kind of "style" îs frowned upon amongst most amateurs, however, professionals use it all the time, and they never complain.. They just study harder in order to defeat it.. So, I would define cheese in Sc as "a strategy prepared ahead of time that tries to trick the opponent into making a mistake (be that poor scouting patterns in the form of proxy, inticing the opponent into a bad play, such as nexus cancel into 4gate, etc.)". Just my 2cents..

So, an all-in could be cheese in the sense that you're gambling on your attack to win. But if you know 100% your all-in can't possibly fail, then it wouldn't be cheese. So yeah I'd consider lifting to gold a form of cheese.

lets look at the prime example of a cheese rush that came about, boxer's is earliest that i can remember. i remember the commentators going crazy yelling "cheeju lushi!" as boxer pulls all his scvs and rushes with 2 marines with more marines rallied. as mentioned, its high risk(early scout) (DEPENDING ON SITUATION!!!! 2 marine scv rush is 100% safe against aggressive hatch builds, this applies to any early rush like 10gate, 6pool, etc.) so it isn't risky in certain situations. BUNKER RUSH IS NOT CHEESE. its only a form of early harass, that can end games if not dealt with properly. Fast expand is not cheese. it is simply, fast expand, the pros and cons should be obvious. just because it isn't standard, does not mean it needs to be labeled as something else. call it unorthodox but its never "standard or cheese". cheese should be used to define something that is very early game, like 2 marine +scv, 6 pool, cannon rush. if prepared, should be easy to hold off. many good players can transition out of a cheese rush as long as they've done sufficient damage to each other. to add, "all-in" should be defined close to its usage in poker. you know you're obviously losing, therefore "all-in", give everything you got in hopes to come up on top. for example, 2port banshee is not an all-in, however, if that fails and you're far behind, you decide to pump out extra marines/banshee instead of building CC to expand, bring all your scvs to attack/repair and hope to win. - this is all in. there is no "all-in" build, "all-in" is situational. i guess there could be a "all-in" build if you're already set on leaving the game if the planned strat doesn't work as you planned.
