JP, HOW ABOUT DISCUSSING THIS MLG format once in ur show? You critizise EVERY other major event. You ALWAYS find sth. How about u start once with MLG?
I'm just sick that everyone that is involved with any coverage of big SC2 event is so freaking biased. JP, djwheat, artosis,.. They NEVER talk badly about anything that MLG produces (except extended series..).
MLG put the date of the Arena exactly on the date where Assably takes place. No critzism from anyone (just some pathetic JP "well, we cant change it; it is how it is.. blabla")
You randomly invite 139 players to the qualifiers, instead of making it an open q.
Now you even charge 20 dollars for just being able to see this tournament. Sorry, now im just glad your date collided with ASUS ROG.

This is reminiscent of Netflix hiking up prices the same services and losing a huge chunk of their quarterly earnings as a result. Vastly different models, I realize. But comparatively speaking at face value, it doesn't seem to be something that will work in comparison to the massive ad revenue they would likely generate.
What's worse is that there is Assembly that weekend as well, which is in direct competition with MLG. Here's the thing though, they're broadcasting free. So at best, people will watch the first free match and then move on to spend their time watching Assembly and checking Liquipedia for MLG results.
At least that's what I'm going to do. For a purely self-possessed standpoint, this is fantastic because now I don't have to choose and/or split my time between Assembly and MLG. Woo. As an addendum, I sincerely hope they don't pick up this viewing model for the Winter Championships.

I imagine this is a trial for winter arena only.

Wow can someone say "backfire"? First the announcement of all the layoffs less than 2 weeks before Christmas, now wanting $20 for a weekend of games? Two huge reasons why I won't be buying.. 1) Dreamhack at the same time...are they crazy they are going to lose SO many viewers 2)$20 by itself may not seem like a large amount, but then I compare it to what I paid for my GSL season 1 ticket ($15 I believe..) and it seems like a gouge.

People pay more for UFC Pay Per Views and they are only like 3-5 hours max Meanwhile MLG offers PPV for 20 Dollars and you get 5 streams for 20 hours with all the people you've watched fight through the qualifiers.
MLG has my 20 bucks and anyone that thinks that 20 dollars USD is outrageous then you are spoiled because what you are getting is worth way the hell more than what you are paying for it. You have this 100% backwards. People that think 20 dollars is too much for this product value 20 dollars more than you do. I frankly am not interested in paying 20 dollars for the right to watch this when I have the right to watch Assembly for free. Its that simple. And what about the people that have to miss a day of MLG due to work or something, but would still like to catch some games. Its fair for them to have to pay 20 dollars?
I am all for supporting eSports. But not to the point that I will blindly ignore being over charged. The MLG will NOT be 20 dollars better than Assembly. Nor will it be 20 dollars better than any of the Dream Hacks or the IPL. That reason alone is enough for me to choose not to pay or watch.
And the spoiled comment is weak. Some people just cant afford to pay it. Thats hardly being spoiled.

Assembly it is then! This sucks =(

If you got yourself one of these, like I did, and thought that you were all covered for MLG's for a year, I guess you're out of luck I know it only says MLG Pro Cercuit... Still kinda surprising that being a gold member, dosn't buy you access imo

don't even try and compare the quality of not only the sport being presented but the quality of the production, the magnitude of the events and the hype, media, and quantifiable size of the two sports. Esports isn't anywhere close to MMA, I wish we'd drop the comparisons by now.
$20 for 3 days isn't A LOT by any means, but wasn't it previously $30 for an MLG Pro Circuit GOLD 1 year pass? I just don't think MLG or sc2 content is at the level where $20 is a deal. Especially with all the downtime (that's always promised to be fixed) and other quirks that always seem to happen at every event. They say 20 hours of content but really only 3-4 is highly valuable, meaning high quality play or content. MLG is by far my favorite tournament (yes even moreso then GSL) but it feels like half the event is watching crowd shots waiting for the next game (this is coming from a gold member, with quad stream).
$30 for a year becomes $20 for an event? Nope.

I'd gladly save 20 dollars and wait a week lol, wtf are they thinking? It's not worth it to watch it live. Whoa, I missed that. Hmm that's strange. At one or two months it becomes less attractive, but only a week later makes it easy to just wait it out.

i am a fanatic supporter of mlg and i do not mind them making us pay for HD/exclusive content. however, it seems like there arent any free low quality streams! what is going on? who is the business advisor behind this move? it is horrible. they have only been truly engaged in sc2 for a year, thus the fan base is not large enough to have us all pay. they will have MUCH lower numbers because of this.
oh man i feel like mlg is trying to move too fast and is too confident in it's fan base. they are going to be very disappointed with the numbers after this event.
edit: wait wtf assembly is on the same weekend? oh god the folks there are going to be giddy with glee.

Seriously no free stream?

Yet they have such a low price pool compared to a tournament like Dreamhack where you get HD stream for FREE while sitting thru 1 telia ad with calm music in it between each game. I'd rather donate 20$ to DreamHack and watch Assembly than pay MLG 20$ and watch both. Sundance is only in it for the money.
so how do you know the stream is going to have ads? and again, why do people think it's only for the money? there are much better ways to pull off a "scam" if he wanted to steal everyone's money. flying 32 people in and out of NYC is not the best way to "scam" people out of their money.

MLG Gold doesn't include this?
Damn, this is gonna be terrible

OK, after reading everything, (make sure you read everything before bitching about it) i understood the situation, not sure if it's a good move or a bad move i mean, i'm not gonna pay 20$ for 10 hours of gameplay in total when you have events like this more or less once a week, also making it when assembly gonna be live for free is not the best move ever, however i understand why they actually do it so i cannot say they are acting like they want to steal money from us...
I don't really know what it's gonna happen... we'll see what they think on SOTG pretty soon i am sure...

I don't think $20 is that much if it turns out to be high quality content. UFC PPV is ~$40-50 usually and that's for 3 hours of entertainment. No one I know complains about that, and yet so many people seem to have a problem with SC trying to charge less for more content.
That being said, I understand since everything else is so cheap; I pay <$20 for a entire season of GOM. And they picked a pretty bad weekend to try it out. I get why some people would choose not to watch/pay given all that. SC is in a very strange spot at the moment in terms of payment models.
Spelling edit T_T

Haha, good luck MLG. You're not getting my money.

$20 for over 20 hours of awesomeness? Why the fuck is everyone complaining? Thats nothing. You guys cant spare 20 bucks? Thats like a dollar an hour, 50c per game (on average). Im a poor student and even I can afford this, just don't go out on the wkend or something, its not hard to budget $20.
For SC2, and esports in general, to become big, it needs to be monetized. And you guys cant spare 20 bucks to watch the best SC2 players in the world go at? Are you kidding me? This is a small fee for alot of content, high-end production, where we'll probably see some of the most epic games in SC2 to date

For the people who are "omg 20 bukks are you poor lul thats nothing", you have to consider that most SC fans are young, and probably don't have loads of money to spend. Obviously you can say that "well the game costs 60$ and look at how much your computer costs", but that's not the same, you can't compare them. I'm 15 and there is no way that i would pay 20$ just to watch ONE event, maybe for a month of GSL i'd pay.
Out of intrest, how much does PPV cost for the viewers of boxing/MMA or whatever else?
Also, someone should make a poll to see how many people are going to pay for this and how many are not.
