They do that even if it's perfectly clear. I agree with TL's stance. Can't link to a PPV only event.

And an extra little "lol" just for that inflammatory tone, nice. But sure, since you seem to be in that mood, I can elaborate a bit. I have very little idea about who Sundance is in person, or the details of how MLG is advertised, but I see no reason for any company to not make a statement that will increase their sales, when there is no chance of their statement being proven false. In this case, we will never know what their projections are, and we do not know how much they have sold up to now. Maybe they will publish number of sold tickets, but I doubt we will ever know their projections. So it is entirely safe to tweet, true or not. So: - Will never be proven false. - Will help sales. - Will make sponsors happy. Why not? I mean, I honestly hope that MLG does well, for e-sports in general, and I think twitter is a great place to advertise, so I genuinely hope that he will get more viewers from it. But I think we should be careful in using his tweet as confirmation that sales are actually doing well. You can compare to how everyone are publishing stream information in ways to make it look like every single person on the globe was watching on triple screens in HD every second of their tournament. And plase don't PM me any more.
Where in that post did you provide hard evidence rather than assumptions? Your argument: the tweet benefits sundance, therefore it must have been a lie. All you have is an assumption that he will greedily do whatever it takes to get more buyers. You might wanna put a little more thought into your posts.

This puts the event somewhat out of sight, and out of mind imo. It will probably greatly reduce the number of spontaneous subscribers/viewers.

This is a silly distinction. If MLG Arena is listed in the same manner on the calendar as, say, a Dreamhack event, it's no more an "ad" for the former than it is for the latter. It's "giving information to your users" that the event is going on, as you said. An ad is a banner, a sponsored thread, etc. A listing on a calendar is just information. That's what calendars are for. Stop posting, you don't understand. If the information given is a link to a product that you have to pay for IT'S ADVERTISING! How hard is it to understand? Uhh...I just presented an argument for why a calendar listing for a PPV stream is no more an "ad" than a calendar listing for a free stream. In response to my argument, you said "the PPV listing is advertising" without trying to explain yourself. Why are you accusing me of not understanding when you don't even have enough understanding of the discussion to explain your own reasoning? Perhaps you're not familiar with the concept of an advertisement. In case you're not aware, free events can advertise themselves. It was his post regarding mine and we shared the opinion.
And you are fighting semantics if you don't see why a payed advertising is ok for a payed stream?
While all the streams on the calendar right now are advertising themselves they immediate offer something in return for free. But a PPV advertise on the calendar offers nothing for most of the users here so you must pay for the privilege of it being displayed.

It's a resonable decision, on top of that unlike some others here I do not think it will be a big hit for MLG. The fact is that this event has gotten publication and media space bigger than any other event yet in SC2 history. Therefore so I doubt there will be nearly anyone who would suddenly find out about it because of the TL calender and people have on top of that most likely already decided if they are to pay or not to pay for the event.

Totally agree with TL 100%. MLG looses so bad. I'm not watching a single minute this weekend.

Can one of you people who are thanking TL for this explain what you are thanking them for? For taking a stance against MLG's ppv event? Because that's not why TL is doing this

I thank them for turning their backs on MLG because they refused to pay for advertise. It was double standards from MLG.

They are just too retarded/lazy to read a simple post, therefore they read the title, the first line... and then they are happy because they are mad at MLG for not giving everything free to them.
But, TL stance is completly understandable in that case. It's not against MLG nor PPV model, it's simply that PPV should have to pay to get advertised.
|
This makes complete a total sense. I use TL almost exclusively to watch streams and tournaments. I wouldn't ever want to see something embedded here that I had to pay for.
|
Oooh, while power-plays are always interesting to watch, I didn't really imagine TL going there. Tension! :O

Well, yes, it is. Regardless of what they claim, this is the only way anyone would actually see it, and they know that. Which is why people are thanking them, I suppose.

Based on TL's policies, rules and guidelines this is the correct decision. TL's calendar and live stream service has always been a resource for very specific, very directed content. You always had to meet certain criteria in order to be on that calendar, and that criteria was very clear.
The fact that TL does not have a comprehensive, easy to access, view, and digest universal calendar that lists all major events and programs (like some seem to expect) is an entirely different discussion. Perhaps TL should have such a feature, perhaps it shouldn't, but that isn't what the calendar was set up for.
I do agree with the idea that as a community site, not having some kind of universal calendar that lists all major events and programs, with information about each is a problem, but TL has never had such a feature, and if the admins want to set up something like that or not is up to them.
Some information that should be on a universal calendar (some of which is on the current calendar, some of which is not): Type of program (e.g. tournament, talk show, news show, analysis, player stream etc.) Program Description Expected start/end times Viewing Options (e.g. through TL, TwitchTV, Own3D, Company Website [such as MLG], dedicated player [such as GOMTV]) Access (e.g. PPV, free to view, HD-passes, no-ad passes) Additional Information: Any additional information (e.g. for tournaments player lists, map pool lists, and prize pool breakdowns, for talk shows, special guests. Basically any additional information you would want to add.)
I would support adding a universal calendar as described above for a variety of reasons (and believe that not having a universal calendar as a community site is a big problem), but just to be clear, that is not the issue at hand. The current TL calendar was never meant to be a universal calendar.
I applaud TL for sticking to their rules as written, and clearly explaining why. TL does an excellent job at managing expectations, and upholding the standards it sets. I would expect nothing less. This was clearly the correct decision, and I support it.
