I have Asian parents, and I showed this video to my dad and he was shocked.Yes, Asian parents are harsh. I've been caned, beaten, yelled at, made to kneel in a corner and all other kinds of nasty things. I've even been dragged out and dumped in the garden when I was too lazy to leave the bed. However, my dad or my mum would never shoot a laptop and post it on the internet because:
1) Asian families keep their dirty linen to themselves. As bad as things may be, what happens in the family stays in the family. Essentially the outside world does not need to/should not know family disputes. It looks bad on you as a parent, and it looks bad on the whole family.
The guy's response pointed out the obvious problem - once on the internet, always on the internet. When this girl applies for a real job in the future and they do a simply background check, this silly video will be something she will have to explain. Of course most companies might shrug it off, but what if this girl wanted to work as a politician? or a public figure? it's just bad baggage.
2) Asian parents do everything for their children. Of course my dad has his ego and idiosyncratic ways. But at the end of the day, everything was done with my future in mind (see point 1 about how posting this on the internet basically handicaps the girl in the future). Now it's his kid to raise. But what my dad showed me is that when he scolded me, it was never about him, or his bruised ego, or what not. It was about teaching me a lesson, addressing my inadequacies.
Watch the video. His voice is shaking, and he clearly isn't thinking straight. He even dedicates one bullet to her mom because the mom asked him to. This isn't just about teaching his daughter a lesson, it is also about him venting. And that's just silly, because you scold the child for the child, and not to make yourself feel better.
3) An Asian parent would have sold the laptop, used it for himself, or something more productive than shooting it to bits.

If the kid thinks she's got a hard life, then she should get informed on asian kids. The parents beat the children to "discipline" them. It's a hard world and if at the age of 15 you think you can do something about it, you're wrong.
The man in the video seems very unpleased. If I were the girl, I wouldn't have posted the hate letter on fb just to avoid any conflict between them. I guess the daughter ain't very smart.

Jesus christ you spoilt little fucks. Notice kids from poorer countries taking all your jobs. Cause you're so fucking lazy and arrogant to get a job that's "below you".
Not supporting the daughter. What he did was a grown-up temper tantrum. He hasn't instilled whatever work ethic or values he wanted to in her when she was a child and she's grown up to be an obnoxious rebellious teenager. Publicly humiliating her in front of millions of people and destroying her things won't do anything except make her angry and afraid.
She's 15 years old, why should she get a job? If her parents buy her things she wants and don't make her work for it, isn't that on them? I didn't work when I was 15 does that make me lazy and arrogant?
It's not black and white. He has a right to be angry but he's dealing with it in a way far more childish than her facebook post was. I expect that behavior out of a child, not a grown man. But apparently he is incapable of communicating or working things out reasonably with his own daughter.

Second point is right on. He's not doing anything to teach her a "lesson" he's throwing a temper tantrum.

This is awesome. She was warned, thought he wasn't serious, and got punished for it. It's interesting to see people actually defend her... my twelve year old brother does more than her. She has no right to complain about anything, she has it good. The hilarity of putting this on FB is genius as well. She disrespects (and embarrasses) them, they embarrass her. There are few ways better when it comes to teaching a lesson than embarrassment. And that's an unintended consequence, the dad had no idea this would blow up.
And to all the people saying "it's her laptop" or "what a waste"... from what I can tell, she didn't buy it, he did. It was technically his to do whatever he pleased. Every nice thing she has is from her parents, and yet she whines about them. What a brat.
If you are grounded for THREE MONTHS and still do this, there is no way parents are going to let you keep it. My parents have threatened to throw out electronics before.. even stuff that I bought. I was a minor, but they have authority and know what's best. I find this 100% justifiable.

If you don't have a job at 15, that's fine. But if you want expensive things, smartphones, laptops, cameras etc. and are unwilling to get a job to pay for them yourself and are expecting your parents to just give it to you, then yes, that makes you lazy and arrogant.
It's OK to not have a job, but it's not OK to expect expensive things from your parent if you don't.

I agree with that. That doesn't mean I agree with the dads reaction. I'm not surprised though because most of TL seems to be in favor of bullying, child abuse, social darwinism, etc.

i don't think its ethical for someone in his situation to have children at all.

So..in America if a kid posts a message on facebook complaining about basic stuff, you shoot their laptop...in a public place....and post the video on youtube for profit? Gotcha!
Oh and they're religious? I see. It all makes sense.
And before you quote me saying this is one guy, i've read a LOT of comments on his Facebook, and on Youtube, and the majority of the parents think what he did was right, LOL.
Oh and the fact the daughters response to the comments made on Youtube where 'It's only a laptop, pfft.' - Yeah, I mean, you could probably feed an African for a year or two with the money it cost, but hey, it's just a laptop!

The dad's behavior is wrong in so many ways that I am really puzzled how somebody can think it's justified.
As a parent, you need to take responsibility for your kid - as your kid cannot do so on her own. At the end of the day, that is the very essence of parenting. So yeah, your kid may behave stupidly from time to time, she may be lazy, fail at school or whatsoever. Hell, she may even throw stuff at you or steel your radio and sell it for drugs. But as parents, you never actually blame the kid for it, rather try helping her overcome her problems. If you dont, you are simply an ass and a failure as a dad and as an individual.
Besides, it is completely ridiculous to shoot at the laptop. If you ever touch a weapon for reasons such silly - and in an obviously angry mood - you should loose the right to keep weapons. But yeah, stupid american rednecks detected...

Lets be happy this shows that E-Sports now officially reached the masses

Last time I checked it had 1 million views, now 9.3 ... wow.

I personally think the dad is completely justified. Releasing it to the internet may affect her future negatively, but we'll see. I live in a household where respect is mutual. I know my dad is working 8 hours a day so I can go to school. I know my mom has a bad back, so I do as much of the chores as is reasonable, without complaint. Yeah I got yelled at, and grounded and spanked growing up, but it was all absolutely justified. Responsibility is something that needs to be taught all the way growing up.
Complaining about stuff is fine. You are absolutely allowed to express displeasure at having to do chores. Insulting parents as a byproduct of complaining is not. I made the mistake of doing that once, and for it I ended up walking 2 miles home.

Masochistic stockholm-syndrome victim.
But if you grow up getting beaten, it's hard to expect a child to not understand that it's wrong.

Props to the dad, now this is a guy who's trying to pass his values to his daughter, in spite of a very different environment.

That's probably the vocal minoirity you're reffering to but I agree. Sometimes it seems like that is the consensus of TL as a whole because only those with extreme opinions get riled up enough to post in many of these threads. Meanwhile all the decent people read those comments and close the thread down instantly because they realise there is no point in arguing with uneducated sociopatic narcisists becuase you can't change their minds. Damn I wish I was one of those decent people.

Yeah, the gun thing seems retarded, probably mostly due to cultural differences. I'd have no problem if he had used a baseball bat or anything. On a whole, as viewers we can't really judge the scenario, since we don't know all the other stuff the kid pulled (the fathers stance is obviously "this was the last straw"). On one hand that kid seems like a spoiled brat. On the other- whose fault is that?
