PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds is a contemporary battle royal style PvP game develped by BlueHole games (https://www.bluehole.net/en/) the same developers behind the MMO Tera.
The game is currently in early access on PC available through Steam. It has been announced for Xbox in 4k.
Roughly 100 players are dropped onto an island, and quickly must find weapons to do battle until one player is left. The playable area is slowly restricted, so combat is eventually forced. This style of game was largely made popular in H1Z1. Some of the unique features of the game are the ability to queue in teams (duo or "squad"), fully lootable player kills (which really encourage engagements), a highly interactive environment, a variety of weapons and some excellent vehicles for moving about the map.
Starcraft commentator Nathanias has been playing this game quite a bit on his stream, and that is what turned me onto it ...
I have found the game to be quite challenging and to have a decent skill ceiling, a couple of the qualities we all enjoy about Starcraft. Please use this thread to discuss the game development and maybe get some teams together
I feel like this is just another H1Z1, DayZ etc. clone. Just another fad-of-the-month survival game on steam. I just don't see how it is different from all the others, except that its popular now. Hell I even watch Forsen play this almost everyday, but I'd never pick this up myself, even for 5 EUR.

I do agree it's a carbon copy of those games. But it is actually having consistent decent views on twitch, and the hype this game got the others failed to get. With that said it probably will be just a fad, only lasting longer then the other ones of the same genre.
Ive played the arma dayz mod, then skipped the standalone and h1z1 and all the similar ones like the culling etc. But this one is different. You cant say this is a carbon copy of those games, thats like saying dota2 is a carbon copy of the dota funmap for wc3, while league and hots exist.
This game is already way more massive than h1z1 and delivers content updates and fixes regularly. They have massive contracts with sony and will release for ps4 and xbox too. There is massive cash behind this game that isnt just EA-money.
What I don't like about the game is the amount of bullets it takes to kill a person. The aiming system sucks, I play overwatch and have an average of 42-64% accuracy depending on the situation, I'm shooting the dude multiple times in the chest or in the head and nope, does not die, however, I die instantly to a car that barely touched me.

It's an early access game costing $/€30. fixing bugs and having a bit of content is a minimum.
Still, I don't get why this game has such a broken physics. Nothing is realistic, and worse, most things are inconsistent. It's quite far from being appealing for me yet.

Coming from a programming background, they were probably spending money on servers, and load balancing. This game got popular really fast - I can see them spending time on servers rather than fixing physics, even though it really makes it harder to get to the top.
I also hate the driving physics, sometimes tiny bumps send you flying. The gunplay is fine though, most of the things that seem broken is really just lag and bad tickrate. Other than that people probably just have the wrong expectations? Its not quake, you are not 100% accurate and at the same time its not counterstrike where the guns have unrealistic but consistent spray patterns that you just have to learn and master. The bullets dont always fly where your cursor is, which can be frustrating and give you the inconsistent feeling.
^With that rapid growth they probably cant even keep up with renting new servers.
Im having huge fun playing duos/squads already and its well worth the 30$, though its not something that i would play solo.

The difference is, playerunknown was the guy who actually created the mods for the other games "Battle Royale" mode.
PUBG has reached insane popularity (#5 record for concurrent users EVER on Steam, and just this past weekend broke their own record - soon approaching the GTA5 record from the PC release to hit #4 ever) simply for this reason.
It's a Battle Royale game, made by the mod creator, with a client actually created to be a Battle Royale game (and not a survival game modded to Battle Royale).
Regarding support, in the short time they have been released, they have been much more consistent with updates & patches than the other games already.
And the shooting mechanics I find to be far and away more solid than H1Z1/etc, without the dumb "exploits" like how vehicles are used in that game, etc.
They are also reinvesting the money in to future development, with things like "player controlled zombie mode", new movement abilities/actions and multiple maps coming in the future - which is already far more development than the other battle royale games/modes have gotten over years.
PUBG is going to be the battle royale game to beat for the awhile, in to the unforseen future. To even challenge the momentum they have going right now, it's going to take a lot of work, innovation, and strong design. Which likely won't happen for at least 1-2 years at minimum.
GTA5 was an incredibly popular game. INSANELY popular. To be approaching GTA5's amount of popularity, at just a couple months in to release... And the player numbers are STILL increasing if you watch them week to week. To have that amount of popularity, and not just sustain growth, but to keep growing.... That's far more than just a fad.
Payday 2 just gave away 5 million copies on Steam, which brought them to the #5 most popular spot ever in concurrent users, and PUBG dethroned them directly after.
Just look at the numbers on here, and it's hard to say this is a "fad" - http://steamcharts.com/

As an early access game it better deliver frequent bug fixes and updates. Watching streams of it on twitch alot and I see random lag and glitching all the time. There physics engine is hilarious too. Hopefully they fix it for bullets and people but leave it on these low grav setting for vehicles. It makes the game feel action movie esq with cars flipping and rolling after getting shot at and launching 20 feet in the air when they blow up.
That said as far as Microsoft is concerned PUBG will be xbox exclusive. There's official press from E3 stating that and only rumors (albeit undenied ones as of now) that PS4 will get it too.

Sadly, most early access are scammy. They usually don't deliver frequent fixes, just look at H1Z1's state.
Regarding Microsoft.... they were very slick with their wording. Multiple times at E3 they used the exact phrase "Release Exclusive"... Basically it's going to release exclusively on XB before releasing on other consoles.
Apparently they had to give the impression of true exclusivity to make it look like their system has more actual exclusives, when these games are not being designed as true exclusives. They did the same thing with Anthem.
It's extremely fun with friends and takes the best of other games to deliver the ultimate battle royale. Playerunknown and his team know what they are doing and early access will be over in a few months.
PUBG gets my two thumbs way up. Me and my brothers are having a blast in this game and we fucking hate battle royal shooters but we are super hooked on this. Almost nightly we play a few rounds.

H1Z1 was a buggy piece of shit.
This game is great. I can just barely get a playable enough framerate, but it's a terrific game. I do wish there were some 1st person only servers. I can't aim in 3rd person for the life of me, so I get boned a lot whenever I get in close.
I've been playing this for a bit. Never played DayZ/H1Z1/etc. but I found it to be pretty fun, especially with friends. I can't aim for the life of me though lol
Abuse of 3rd person camera and using sounds is so important. I think 1st person is better suited for this type of game, it doesn't seem right you should be able to see somebody over a wall you have no vision over or down stairs you're not even looking in the direction of. I guess it helps against pure camper playstyle though.

Yeah. I just try to not use it unless it is indoors and I am positive I'm facing one person. It's more of a bitch late when the circle is coming in on you and there's multiple enemies.
