I got a +10 lightning bastard sword, The good chime and defenders shield.
Current armor is: elite alonne Knight chest. Normal alonne Knight, legs and hands. Mannikin mask for head :-).
Got any tips for better armor and a good magic defense shield?
Would it be worth to go for 50% weight for some pvp and ng+? magic magic shield of course, only 2 weight and 100% defense vs magic. For a better armor it's hard, what's the total weight of your armor ? There are various armor optimizers, like this one https://googledrive.com/host/0B3UR187z11dZdm5vZGo1WHdTQUE/ArmourOp.html
I have a nice java programm that does it, but I can't find the link anymore, can upload it if necessary tho. Ho found it http://www.reddit.com/r/DarkSouls2/comments/27dj1v/i_made_an_armour_optimiser_for_dark_souls_2/?limit=500

dark transgressor's leather shield is also good if you see a hex user; 100% defense vs dark, only 0.3 weight! affinity spam is a lot less common these days tho

Holy Shit guys. My brother and I were just invaded by "Santa Claus." He gave us a bunch of cool shit, didnt attack at all and left. This guy is the man. If you see him don't attack he will give you things, just like the real Santa! :DDD

At that point I had no idea you are able to drop items so when he did I thought it is some kind of trap mechanism or bomb. Took me like 10min to understand his intentions while he waited in the game and I wasnt sure if he attacks. It took another 15min to find out what a home button is (it's called different on german keyboards) to thank him.

Finished the game yesterday after 55 hours played, SL130-ish (X360 version, offline). I prefer this game over the first because it is overal a more polished experience. Especially combat felt a lot better and more precise. Difficulty-wise I'd say they're about equal. Both games have insane difficulty spikes at times, and parts that blatantly feel cheap, as if the developer wanted you to cheese your way past it. In all, I died about 100 times (although about a quarter to a third of those were due to me trying to figure out how to get to certain items).
Bosses I particularly liked were: -The Pursuer: coolest boss in the game for me. Looks badass, and is sure to cause beginners a lot of problems because he's so unrelenting and blocking isn't really an option. -Ruin Sentinels: definitely challenging as well (but not impossible), and forces you to be both patient and aware of your positioning. -Velstadt, the Royal Aegis: I love the design they did on him. He looks both threatening but extremely high-ranking and respectable at the same time.
Bosses I disliked: -Old Iron King: I really dislike bossfights in which the environment is more dangerous than the boss itself. This boss I died the most to just because of the lava. -Mytha: unless you read a guide or a wiki, there is no way a new player will know that burning the windmills drains the poison out of her room. -Covetous Demon: Don't see the point in him being in the game. Way too easy.
There are some things I read online and want to comment on though. The first thing is the improved tracking. I think this was necessary. I saw way to many cases of enemies just slashing at nothing while you were already behind them in DS1. This made backstabbing ridiculously easy. At least in DS2 they have the will to face you and hit you instead of just finishing their attack animation regardless of whether you are already behind them or not.
Secondly, enemies stop respawning. I welcome this. The first time I played DS1, I died a lot to the Taurus Demon. That didn't really annoy me much though. What did annoy me is that I had to plow through all the enemies between the bonfire and that boss again and again and again. It was fun and challenging the first few times, but after that I started to feel like a chore, a grind. I knew I was able to defeat those enemies. I just wanted to beat the boss and continue the game. Eventually I did defeat him, and then got killed by that dragon. Result: having to go through all those enemies once again.
Thirdly, "the game forces you into a certain playstyle!". This one usually comes up when people first get to the Shrine of Amana, and are faced with the fact that without some sort of ranged attack, they probably won't survive. However, this isn't the first time the game gently nudges the player towards a more versatile playstyle. There are various occasions where a ranged playstyle - be it magic or bows - is safer and more efficient. The game does not force you into a certain playstyle as much as it just tells you to use whatever means necessary to overcome certain situations. This was already the case in DS1, where defeating the first two bosses was way easier if you just threw firebombs at them rather than wail at them with a sword.

So I just bought DSII.
I was wondering if there is any fix/tweak needed before starting the game. Or is it good as it is fresh out of the box ?
Even if it is good fresh out of the box, any mod I should know about ?

It will patch itself via steam, more is not needed but I suggest using a gamepad.

If you want to beautify the game a bit, there's also Generic Downsampling Tool. It makes the game quite a bit darker on my PC, so I can't really use the tool until it's fixed, but that's not everyone's experience.

Is it me or are the servers on the evening not good enough for PvP?
I played some PvP (dragon covenant) at noon and had zero issues but now in most fights (I did ~15) I heard the hit sound but did no damage, like 5 enemies did damage but their weapon animation stopped half a meter away from me.
And at noon everyone was friendly but now 60% started attacking during my arrival.

Do you play restricted server? I used to do allowed to try and get more invasions but the shorter wait wasn't worth the desync
otherwise I dunno, connection has been pretty good both morning and day for me

Can't wait. Dark Souls is easily one of the best games ever made imo. They took Demon's Souls and made it better in almost every way, which i thought was impossible. Hopefully this game pushes it even more. a good game, yes, but too difficult, i died every two minutes. I can not muster my courage now to play this again.

Just summon friendly phantoms if you are having a difficult time.

I've been playing a bit of DS1 after beating DS2, I'm up to blighttown by now. The 30 fps are really unsettling, but on the other hand I haven't yet been hit when I think I should have like it happened in dark souls 2 sometimes (presumably because of it being meant to be played at 30 fps?). Also I sure miss not being able to teleport between bonfires xD Other than that DaS1 is a great experience, I'll definitely play it to the end.

DS1 works more with layered level design that has multiple shortcuts around the world to make something massive relatively small. I personally liked ds1 a little bit more

Yeah it's definitely amazing too, it's just different and gets a little while to get used to. Only thing I don't really like is the ragdoll on corpses, pretty annoying and leads to scary/stupid stuff (like a corpse jumping behind you while you're fighting because you step on it). I think I'm gonna hate blighttown though, the creepy monsters/atmosphere + platforms you can fall off combo seems awful :D Gonna do that darkroot garden zone first. Also I watched a few videos from VaatiVidya on youtube about DaS' lore, definitely check it out if you're interested in the story, they are great.

Ok, I've got to vent somewhere about this. Goddamn Shrine of Amana. This is the first point in dark souls 2 where the lovely combination of "frustrating but fun" has evolved into simple frustration. What the fuck were the game developer's thinking? "lets make a Blighttown esq area where we restrict the players movement, then fill the area with annoying long ranged mages that shoot homing balls of shit, oh I know, we could make the area better by adding lurkers in the water that don't seem to follow any logical aggro patterns, the player will surely have fun guessing whether or not running up to kill a mage will suddenly turn into a 3v1"
Then some other developer asshole has a brilliant idea "OH! we can make the area even better by making it huge and introducing enemies that do nothing other then destroy equipment and make the player have to fight through them to progress every time they die to the mages!"
Every time I die I too hollow bit by bit along with my stalwart player character. The Curse is real.
