Thats not the point! The problem is the same as in Diablo3! Why play a game to get Ship X when people just can pay for it? That ruins all the fun about earning it yourself, when you know 100.000 people already have something bigger/better because they paid for it...

The point is that its not better, just different. You can earn these items pretty easily in game, the option to buy is just there for people who don't have the time to play as much. And unlike Diablo 3, a better pilot will usually win a fight no matter what the other guy is flying. Chris Roberts has gone into huge detail on this issue.

Why play the game? Because it is fun and you enjoy playing the game. You seem to be getting this game confused with a game like Diablo 3, where the only point is to collect loot to make you better at collecting loot. Don't get me wrong, ARPG's are a lot of fun (but not Diablo 3), but it's a completely different type of game.
Upgrading your ship is probably going to be a a very important part of Wing Commander, as it should be, but it's not the sole purpose of the game. You haven't "beaten" the game by getting a big ship, you are just able to do different things with it.
And now that I think about it, how lame would it be if this game launched and every single person was flying around in the same dogfighter? The people who have pledged fall on a bellcurve of packages that means when the game launches we will probably have a handful of really large ships from the people that doled out a ton of money, more medium ships, and a ton of smaller dogfighters. Their system of crowdfunding may actually be win-win in that the game launches with a much more diverse playerbase. No one is forced to pay a ton of money to get into the game, and you can be sure there will be plenty to do in the smaller ships.

Did anyone get a Idris corvette?

during this 24-hour stream, after the official idris reveal, the first 150 idris corvettes (priced at $1,250 each) sold out in nine minutes. later they sold another batch of 50, and those sold out in six minutes.
that's right...cig made over a quarter of a million dollars in just fifteen minutes...pretty amazing.

Yea, I can't believe I spent the money on a Connie. Spending $1250 on a ship is something I wish I could do, but I just can't do it.

Sooo.... what is the pay model for this game? This selling of ships is strictly pre-game promotional? Are the ships going to be available for sale post launch? Kinda strikes of the LoL Pay2Compete model...
EDIT: I'm assuming that every single ship is purchasable with in-game currency of course.

EDIT: I'm assuming that every single ship is purchasable with in-game currency of course. Is this game even f2p, or do you have to buy it? If you have to buy it, I cant see how they justify such enormous "micro" transactions, which are bigger than what I have seen anywhere.
Btw LoL can easily be played without spending money. Most of the money there is spend on skins which actually dont do anything other than looks.
Start Citizen should also sell ship skins for the people with too much money and make the ships themselves easily available for the average player.

You can play the game casually, but if you want to compete, the cost of getting a baseline build to be flexible is prohibitive. Most people have to throw down cash to keep up with the pace of the game. The IP cost of rune pages is particularly ridiculous, particularly when the high tier runes cost so much. But I digress.
I hope hope this purchasing of ships with real money is only a pre-release cash grab... Post-launch this behavior would be such a red flag... that's my general worry right now.

EDIT: I'm assuming that every single ship is purchasable with in-game currency of course. the pay model is you buy the game. the ship (or ships) you get are what you'll start out with in the multiplayer part. some ships are only available for a limited time (as a promotion), but yes, any ship they offer you'll be able to buy in-game using in-game credits.

they do sell skins and more affordable ships for sure lol.

Well we have to see how it turns out. So far it is really unclear to me how much time you have to invest to compete with the players who throw tons of money at the game. As long as I dont know that, I surely wont buy the game. If there wasnt the unclear payment model I would buy it in a hearbeat.

|
Kk, this all sounds more reasonable. As pre-launch promotional bellyhoo I have no problem with getting people to spend 1000 on a ship. Only if that carries through past launch does it rustle my feathers a bit.
|
lol no, the idris corvette is very limited...only 300 or so were sold in total. the most expensive ship at launch will likely be the constellation.
|
I pledged for this game when it was on kickstarter but I really don't feel the need to upgrade my pledge as time goes. =O Sure you get a better ship but It's a lot of money to pay for something you can get in game.

Just had to get a caterpillar. So freaking cool!

I don’t really understand what problem people have when they say “oh he will have an edge over me if he got 100 ships” or “when he can buy new ships without any limitations “. I guess those people speak from PvP perspective, so as I understand from watching the 24h stream and watching interviews, there will be rock-paper-scissors system with ships and ship configuration, so even if someone who buys ships whenever he wants goes out there , what advantage is there at all ? Even if couple of those people team up, there will be no advantage for them vs people who simply played few more hours to get the ship with ingame currency.
Probably many of guys who gonna play SC, played EvE, and PLEX is something normal there, you can buy whatever you want, yet I believe no one is become better at something suddenly, its more, those who know the real ingame time required to get something expensive, really do enjoy more , its mental trick, when you “earn” something with your own hands, you tend to enjoy more the feelings afterwards.
Another things, all this ships that are selling now, are there mostly for pledge purposes , for those 300-500 hardcore fans , people who been there with Chris Roberts from the …well I don’t know his first games, I don’t know if Wing Commander is the first one.
I really starting to like this team and company I guess, they really open and friendly, i think few years back I got the same feeling about blizzard, so they really remind me of blizzard in they “better days” and spark honesty and really something unique about them. Before I was thinking that what they want to accomplish is very “utopic” , but then I realized that for space game, you really need less things then for game like WoW for example, less artist for sure. What you need is good design and coding , more than anything i guess, and the "utopia" they promised i think is starting to shape up (if i'm correct, the real development started 5 months ago)

Today is the last day you will be able to purchase ships and get LTI and Veteran Backer status.
