My question is: if I just go in blind, will I likely come to a point where I've messed up my skills/stats/items too much, making it impossible to progress further?

First of all i suggest you to start with dark souls 1 because the story is connected and you wont understand a lot of things. You dont need guides imho before you play the game, you should bear with the problems and try to understand the game and if you stuck somewhere for a long time only then you can take some help. You cant mess up your skills/items because there are 5-6 items in the game that allows you to reset your levels.

Nah, just play, everything works in DS! You also don't need to play DS1 to enjoy the sequel, I would totally recommend playing DS1 tho(cause it's a masterpiece and the better game out of the two :p)

As far as I know you cannot reset your talents in dark souls 1, only in the second one with the item which name I forgot. You can't reaaaaaaaally go wrong though, choose what kind of char you want to do and build for it. Just know that resistance is pretty useless in Dark souls 1.

-Gower's Ring of Protection no longer negates ANY damage from spells. (It now has reduced damage from melee instead of zero damage) -The shadow dagger backstab damage was nerfed, but the riposte damage remains the same. -Any and all curved swords have instant parry frames like the Monastery Scimitar pre-patch. (Why) -Any and all infinite combos are dead. Many of the +3 hit combos are also dead. -Havel's are now mortal, even with Octo buffing (Thank you based from) -Poise actually works now! -Mastohelix still lives through powerstance Pate's Spear T_T

Honestly, a lot of the people who say to do blind playthroughs and not read wiki's or guides are hypocrites who did exactly that. While I personally feel you lose the magic of the game by looking up boss strategies or item locations, I dont see any problem looking at stats, reading how stats effect your progression, the use of weapons, scaling, spells etc - the game is unintuitive to the extreme for people who haven't played the predecessors and it's not going to be a great deal of fun until you figure it out.

You MIGHT want to spend some time on the wiki though so you understand how the stats work. You can build your character anyway you want (hell, you can beat the game at lvl 1), but knowing the caps and what the stats actually do will help you feel like you're not wasting points when you're leveling up.

I've been doing a good amount of PvP since the latest patch. It appears that spears and Red Iron Twinblades are the new meta now, and I have no idea why because they don't do well against good dodging and the Sun Sword (Praise the Sun!).
